JEE Main 2023 B.E/B.Tech Paper Pattern- Considering the wide range of disciplines to choose from later, a clear majority of the test takers sit for the B.E/ B.Tech paper of JEE Main. B.E/ B. Tech paper tests students' knowledge in three sections i.e. Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
JEE Main B.E/ B.Tech Exam Pattern had gone major changes in the previous session with the reduction in CBSE syllabus. There has been an increase in the number of questions, in each section. There will be 30 questions each and candidates will need to answer 25 questions from each of those sections. There will be a total of 10 NAT questions (which was 5 last year) and students will be provided with a choice to answer any five questions in each section. The paper is administered in CBT mode, as a basic condition, candidates appearing/have passed class XII can sit for the paper. Numerical value questions were introduced to the paper pattern of B.E/B.Tech paper in the previous session. The total questions were reduced from 90 to 75 and the same pattern is to be continued in JEE Main 2023.

Why is the knowledge of the exam paper pattern important?
- The knowledge of B.E/B. Tech exam pattern of JEE Main 2023 is very crucial. You will be able to understand the weightage of each section and allot time accordingly.
- The Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics sections students have to answer 25 questions each (20 MCQs and 5 NAT questions). Therefore, all three sections have an equal weightage and you will be required to dedicate an equal amount of time for each of them.
- Each subject has certain important chapters which you will have to focus on. Targeted study planning can be done according to the nature of the questions (MCQs and NAT).
- The paper pattern provides information regarding negative marking for incorrect MCQs. This knowledge will prevent you from making random guesses while attempting the paper.

Changes Introduced in JEE Main 2023 B.E/ B. Tech Paper Pattern by NTA
JEE Main B.E/B. Tech paper will be conducted in the Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode. There will be three sections in the paper - Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
- There will be 10 Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions for all three sections, however, students will have a choice to answer any five from each each section.
- Every section will have 20 MCQs and all questions have to be answered.
- Each MCQ will be awarded 4 marks if correct. For an incorrect answer, 1 mark will be deducted.
- Each NAT question will be awarded 4 marks if correct. 0 marks will be deducted for an incorrect answer.
- The total time duration of the paper will be 3 hours.
- The maximum possible marks will be 300.

Paper Attempting Tricks for JEE Main 2023 B.E/ B. Tech Paper
Trick 1 - Attempt the Chemistry section first, followed by Mathematics, and finally Physics. Chemistry is generally the easiest section and has more questions based on facts. The other two sections have more problem-solving questions. Mathematics is of moderate difficulty while Physics tends to be the toughest.

Trick 2 - You could attempt all the NAT questions in the beginning because they do not have any negative marking.
Trick 3 - Find answers in terms of variables. This will eliminate the possibility of calculator mistakes and makes dimension checking very easy.
Trick 4 - Try to guess the order and dimension of each answer. This will help while rechecking your paper.
Trick 5 - Do not dedicate more than 5 minutes to one question.
Trick 6 - While attempting MCQs, reject the incorrect answers and then check the correct answer.
Trick 7 - Use the substitution technique for Physics and Mathematics. When unknowns such as x,y, or z are given in the question, consider them like 1,0, or any other appropriate digit relevant to the question. However, take care not to try this technique unnecessarily.
Trick 8 - If you have a quadratic equation question in the Mathematics section, first find the sum and product of the roots. Several questions can be solved with these two values.
Trick 9 - Check and recheck your calculations.
Trick 10 - If you are unsure about a question, move onto the next. This will help in time management. You can come back to the question at the end of the paper.
Trick 11 - The most important trick is to stay confident and positive.

JEE Main B.E/ B. Tech Paper January 7, 2020 Shift I
The morning shift on January 7 was conducted between 9:30 PM to 12:30 PM. The B.E/ B.Tech paper was divided into three sections - Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
- The Chemistry section was considered to be the easiest section out of all the 3 sections. A few candidates found Mathematics to be the toughest. Some others found Physics to be the toughest.
- The paper was seen to be easier than the JEE Main question papers of 2019.
- The Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions were moderately difficult.
- A few questions in Mathematics were highly difficult and the section as a whole was considered time-consuming.
- Some of the most asked topics in Mathematics were parabola, quadratic equations, probability, circles, permutation, and combination. Questions from calculus were very high in difficulty level.
- Many questions in Chemistry were based on quantum numbers and chemical bonds.
- Wave optics, resistance, projectile, magnetic field, and modern physics were the most asked topics in Physics.
JEE Main B.E/ B. Tech Paper January 7, 2020 Shift II
The afternoon shift timings were 2.30 PM to 5.30 PM. Once again, B.E/B. Tech paper was identified to be easier compared to JEE Main question papers of the previous year.
- In conceptual terms, physics was defined as the hardest section.
- Mathematics was also high in terms of the level of difficulty and time-consuming at the same time.
- As most of the questions were from NCERT in Chemistry, it was scaled easily by the candidates in terms of difficulty level.
- The syllabus of Classes 11 and 12 was spread throughout the paper in a balanced manner.
- Nevertheless, there were more questions in the mathematics section from the syllabus of Class 12.
- Numeric value-based problems were difficult in physics and simple in chemistry. But attempting these questions in mathematics got difficult as the section was long and thus, time-consuming.
- Mathematics had 3-4 integration questions and they were all easy to attempt. Probability problems were also simple in maths.
- In this year's paper, the weightage of organic chemistry was more compared with last year whereas inorganic chemistry had only 2-3 questions.
- A few questions emerged from Newton 's law of cooling.
JEE Main B.E/ B. Tech Paper January 8, 2020 Shift I
The question paper was considered to be of a moderate difficulty level with Mathematics being the most time-consuming section.
- The numerical value-based questions from Mathematics were found to be easy by the candidates. However, many candidates suggest that test takers must save 90 minutes for the Mathematics section because attempting the desired number of questions will be challenging.
- The question paper covered the syllabus of Classes 11 and 12.
- For Physics, the Class 11 syllabus seemed to have more weightage.
- The Chemistry section which is usually easy in terms of difficulty level was tough this time. Candidates were not expecting a lot of questions from inorganic chemistry. However, there was a fair amount of questions from the topic.
- One question from Chemistry came from environmental chemistry regarding greenhouse gases. There were about 2-3 questions from ionization enthalpy.
- The Mathematics section had questions from Matrix and Determinants, Arithmetic Progression, Vector and 3D, Parabola, Calculus, and Conic sections.
JEE Main B.E/ B. Tech Paper January 9, 2020 Shift I
The Physics section was considered to be the toughest by test takers.
- Physics included a lot of formula-based questions.
- The Mathematics section was easy in terms of difficulty level but it was quite time-consuming. Therefore, attempting the desired number of questions was challenging.
- Many Chemistry questions were asked from NCERT with a few complex portions.
- There were 4-5 questions in the Mathematics section from Calculus.
- Many questions asked in Physics were from thermodynamics, modern physics, resistance, and fluids.
- The Chemistry section had questions from coordination compounds. 6-8 questions were asked from inorganic chemistry while a majority of questions were from organic chemistry.
JEE Main B.E/ B. Tech Paper January 9, 2020 Shift II
The Physics section was considered to be very tough by the test takers.
- The Chemistry section was considered the easiest. Many organic chemistry questions were asked from the exercises given in NCERT books.
- The Mathematics section had an easy to moderate level of difficulty with high weightage given to the Class 12 syllabus.
- Physics was found to be the most difficult section, and according to candidates, more weightage was given to the Class 11 syllabus.
- Many questions in mathematics were asked from Vector, 3D, Probability, and AP.
- Moment of inertia and center of mass were some of the topics asked in Physics.
- Numerical value-based questions were conceptual and easy to attempt, provided that the test-takers had a clear conceptual base.

JEE Main – Sept 6 (Morning Shift) Paper Analysis for B.E/B.Tech
JEE Main September 6 morning session for BE/B.Tech was conducted successfully from 9:00 AM to 12: PM. Here's what test-takers said about the level of Paper-
- Physics section was considered moderate to difficult and toughest in comparison to the other two sections.
- Questions from Optics, Modern Physics, Electrostatics and Magnetism, EMI and thermodynamics were asked in physics.
- Numerical Questions in Physics were mostly asked from class 11th syllabus while theoretical portion was mainly from class 12th.
- Mathematics section was moderate to difficult following the earlier trend. Questions were lengthy and that made the paper a bit tougher.
- Questions from Calculus, Trigonometry, Algebra and Geometry had more weightage. The Conic section and 3-D had the toughest questions.
- Chemistry was again the easiest of all the sections but had some tricky questions. NCERT based direct questions were asked.
- Questions from Chemical bonding, Coordination compound, were asked majorly. Inorganic chemistry had the most weightage.
- An attempt of 38-42 questions will be considered a safe score.
JEE Main – Sept 6 (Afternoon Shift) Paper Analysis for B.E/B.Tech
JEE Main 2020 September 6 Afternoon Session was held from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, Opinions of the students are mentioned below.
- Chemistry was easy just like all the previous sessions but organic chemistry was a little tough for most of the students. Questions from Physical chemistry were easy to moderate, Inorganic chemistry was easy.
- Inorganic chemistry consisted of questions from Elements, Acid and Bases. In Physical Chemistry, questions from Enthalpy, thermodynamics, Mole concepts were asked.
- Physics was considered to be tougher than maths and chemistry comparatively. Questions were conceptual and application-based just like the previous sessions. Numerical questions from mechanics were asked. No direct questions were asked.
- Mathematics section was time-consuming therefore candidates believed it to be moderate to difficult level., No questions from integral calculus and circles were asked. Other sections of mathematics included questions from Vectors, Conic sections, Differential calculus, Algebra, etc.
- An attempt of 40-42 questions in the overall paper will be considered a safe score.
JEE Main – Sept 5 (Morning Shift) Paper Analysis for B.E/B.Tech
B.E/B.Tech paper for morning shift of JEE Main September session Day 5 was conducted successfully from 9.00 AM to 12.00 Noon.
- Continuing with the trend for the current session so far, Physics came across as the toughest section to the candidates.
- Most of the questions in Physics were application based and time-consuming.
- Numericals in the Physics questions were mostly from the syllabus of class 11th. Whereas, the theory-based questions were from the syllabus of class 12th.
- The initial reaction of candidates towards Mathematics was quite divided, some found it easy and for some, it was tougher than Physics as well.
- Some questions in Mathematics were from the topics – Vectors, 3-D, Complex numbers, Integration, Calculus, Coordinate Geometry.
- Chemistry had mostly factual questions, Chemical bonding and Coordination compounds proved to be important topics for the section.
- As per the experts, 36-40 questions with 90 percent accuracy can be counted as a good attempt.
JEE Main – Sept 5 (Afternoon Shift) Paper Analysis for B.E/B.Tech
JEE Main afternoon shift on September 5, 2020 was conducted as per schedule between 3.00 PM to 6.00 PM. Paper Analysis for the same is as follows:
- Many candidates pointed out that questions specially from Chemistry and Maths were similar to NTA Abhyas app mock test questions, in terms of pattern and difficulty level.
- The Chemistry section had more questions from Inorganic chemistry than Organic.
- As per experts, attempting 15-16 questions in Chemistry with 95% accuracy can be counted as a good attempt for the section.
- Questions in the chemistry section were easy in terms of difficulty level, some candidates found the options to be very tricky.
- Physics questions were found to be difficult and mostly calculative, electrostatics was given weightage.
- Mathematics was scaled as easy to moderate as per difficulty level.
JEE Main – Sept 4 (Morning Shift) Paper Analysis for B.E/B.Tech
JEE Main B.E/B.Tech paper was conducted successfully from 9.00 AM to 12.00 Noon, paper analysis for the same is as follows:
- As per the initial reaction of the test takers, mathematics was easy to moderate, physics was moderate and chemistry was easy in terms of difficulty level.
- Some candidates also observed that a lot of questions were quite similar to the mock tests of NTA Abhyas App.
- Physics and Mathematics, both of these sections were found to be lengthy.
- Molecular orbital theory was an important topic for the chemistry section.
- Some topics from which questions were asked in Mathematics were calculus, measurements and 3-D geometry.
- As per the experts, overall 35-45 questions with around 90% accuracy can be considered a good attempt for the paper.
JEE Main – Sept 4 (Afternoon Shift) Paper Analysis for B.E/B.Tech
Day 4 of JEE Main September session papers concluded successfully with the afternoon shift of B.E/B.Tech paper, the exam analysis as per the test takers is as follows:
- The paper overall was found to be of easy to moderate difficulty level, physics being the most complex section.
- Most of the candidates found mathematics easy surprisingly, length of the section however was a concern for the candidates.

B.E/B.Tech Paper for the afternoon Shift was held successfully from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. This is how the exam was according to the examinees.
- Mathematics Paper was lengthy and tricky just like the previous sessions. Questions from calculus had more weightage.
- Vectors, 3-D Geometry, Complex numbers, Conic Sections questions were also asked.

JEE Main Afternoon shift for B.E/B.Tech paper was conducted from 3.00 PM to 6.00 PM. Here is an analysis based on the reaction of the test takers:
- The difficulty level of the paper was almost similar to the January session.
- Mathematics was observed as the most difficult section out of the three. Around 12 questions were asked from Class 11th and 13 questions were asked from Class 12th syllabus.
- A couple of questions in maths were from the topic Vectors, five questions from Coordinate geometry and 4 questions from Algebra.
- Chemistry was found to be easy with direct questions from NCERT. Questions from the Biomolecule test were asked from Organic Chemistry.
- Chemistry consisted of 12 questions from class 11th and 13 questions from class 12th syllabus. 8 questions were asked from Organic, 9 from inorganic, and 8 from physical chemistry.
