Mr. J.P. Patra is the Professor and Head, Department of CSE at the Shri Shankaracharya Institute of Professional Management and Technology. He holds a Ph.D. in CSE from MATS University. He has an experience of over 17 years in the teaching field. He has published 28 Journals and six books. His research interests include Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Algorithms etc. He is a life member of the Computer Society of India, ISTE, IAENG and QCFI.

What keeps you connected with the Education Sector?

"Constant learning and having to upskill for the current trends"

Since my Graduation, I’ve been associated with the education sector. As an educator, I don’t just teach students, I also keep upskilling and learning the current trends. It is a great place to work, the best environment to be associated with. 

What are your roles and responsibilities towards the students?

"I focus on enhancing the student's knowledge of a particular subject"

As the HOD of CSE, I want to develop an ecosystem where each student can enhance their talent in a better way and at the same time, we also take care that before graduation is completed he/she should have a job offer.

Do you offer extracurricular activities to enhance the student's skills or expose them to real-world challenges?

"Students are highly encouraged to participate in their stream related activities" 

We offer many programs and activities so that students can not only have great academic experience in the institute but also improve their life skills such as teamwork, cultural involvement, social skills, time and resource management, sense of commitment and understanding new perspectives. We organize various NSS activities such as Blood Donation Camp, Plantation Drive, Cultural and Artistic Competitions etc. 

How does the SSIPMT curriculum ensure that the students are being prepared for the future?

"Our focus remains on Content Beyond Syllabus" 

Our focus remains on the subjects with the latest technology of the industry. As an example, we have just collaborated with NVIDIA Company for Artificial Intelligence. Along with this, we also try our students to do an internship in the same company so that they get industry level exposure.

How do you try to bring in a practical approach towards subjects and make it industry oriented?

"We focus on both the theoretical and practical aspects of a particular subject"

To provide Industry oriented education the approach of learning from an industry perspective we have introduced project-based learning for each subject. We also encourage our students to make projects based on industry-oriented problems. For this, we have been able to provide them with the area and problem also. 

What approaches do you bring in apart from curriculum to teach the students?

"We conduct student training programs on various subjects"

We conduct mock tests regularly for our final year and pre-final year students. We also conduct mock interviews for each software company along with our alumni and industry people, which helps them a lot in campus placements.

What would you like people to know about your institute they may not know?

"I want people to know us for our research and development"

People must know about our Patents, Publications, Innovations done by our Faculty and Students. AICTE gave us IDEALAB due to our Patent and Innovation work. In IDEALAB any common man can convert his/her idea into a product form. We will provide whatever equipment is needed to convert that idea into a prototype. So we want people to know us as a problem solver institute for industry and society.

What suggestions would you like to give to the current youth and the aspiring students?

"You must Find Your Passion so that your work feels like your hobby"

Always be ready to take the challenges so that you can perform even out of your comfort zone. If you are doing something you are passionate about, you are just naturally going to succeed, and a lot of other things will happen that you don’t need to worry about.
