Baba Institute Of Technology And Sciences

Dr. C.V. Gopinath is the Principal at the Baba Institute of Technology and Sciences (BITS). He has spent 29 years being an administrator, a teacher, and a researcher. He holds a Ph.D in Computer Aided Design from Andhra University, Visakhapatnam. He puts sheer determination in making the university a hub for innovation and excellence.

What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education sector?

“Transforming thousands of budding engineers into responsible citizens of India”

Starting from my father, almost all are teachers in our family and I always feel proud to be a teacher first. I am enjoying every moment of being an academic administrator for the past 15 years. Education is the most responsible field in shaping the future of the country. Academic leaders have a great role to play in transforming the careers of students. A Principal/Director/Dean/VC can inspire the whole institution/University with their innovative decisions. I feel privileged being a principal in implementing innovative ideas and thankful to the management for giving me the freedom to do so.

What is your philosophy of leadership? How would you describe your leadership style?

“Trusting individuals and following a decentralized system”

My philosophy of leadership is to include every stakeholder in the teamwork and winning everyone by conscience. Delegate the right work to the right person and give freedom in executing the assigned work. Trust any person till they deceive.

What do you think should be the University’s top priority over the next 10 years?

“Achieving the Autonomous status and becoming a deemed university”

  1. To go for NBA accreditation and get permanent affiliation with JNTU Kakinada.
  2. Improving the quantity and quality of placements.
  3. Consolidate our position in the state of AP by improving the present rank and obtain NIRF ranking in the top 100 in India

What was your vision for the Institute? Has it evolved, and how far along in implementing that vision are you?

“we aim to improve continuously every year”

My first vision when I assumed office back in 2016, to improve the admission first, and we reached the target in 2017 and continue till today. Next, we aimed for full effective placements for all final year students. From 2017 onwards, our placement record improved and now we reached 91% placements in the 2019-20 batch. We aimed to improve our ranking in AP and nationwide. Last three years we were in the top ten in AP and below 100th rank in India in Times Engineering Rankings.

What are some of the biggest challenges you see, both for higher education in general and for BITS Vizag specifically?

“Skill-based education along with industry interaction and industries”

The COVID pandemic has posed some serious challenges to the entire society and education, in particular. In this situation, there will be fewer admissions from far distances as institutes need to depend on local admissions. Also, we need to put more emphasis on skill development as much as we depend on theoretical knowledge. Skills and exposure will help the students stay relevant in this dynamic industry.

Any suggestions you would like to give to the current youth and the aspiring students?

“A clear conscience with no peer pressure”

My advice would be to study what they want and do with keen interest. Start loving your work and you won’t feel tired. Lastly, take care of your parents, your well-being, and serve the country without any expectations.
