GATE 2023 Paper Analysis for CSE

  • The overall difficulty of GATE CSE 2023 question paper was reported to be easy to moderate.
  • There were 34 MCQs, 15 MSQs and 16 NATs in the paper. All questions in General Aptitude were MCQ based. 
  • 1 mark questions in GATE CSE 2023 paper were more time-consuming as compared to 2 marks questions.

GATE 2023- What to Expect?

IITK is considered to be the most academically rigorous IIT. However, there is no particular IIT or any other conducting body that sets the toughest paper. GATE exam has its own difficulty level and every conducting body is responsible to maintain that level of difficulty for the candidates. 

  • To better understand the difficulty level or the type of questions asked, candidates can refer to the previous year GATE Question Papers from years such as 2001, 2007 and 2015 when IIT Kanpur was the organizing institute. 
  • According to the previous year GATE Paper Analysis, the number of Multiple Select Questions (MSQ) was zero or very less in number in 2021 but IIT Kharagpur increased the number of MSQs in the exam in 2022. According to experts, a similar pattern had been followed when NATs were first introduced in GATE exam. It can therefore be expected that the numthe number of MSQs in GATE 2023 are expected to gradually increase similar to the pattern when NATs were initially introduced.

GATE 2022 ME-1 Paper Analysis

  • The overall difficulty level of GATE ME-1 paper was moderate to high.
  • The Mechanical section was tough and had time-consuming conceptual questions.
  • Unlike last year, 5 MSQs were asked in GATE 2022 ME-1 paper.
  • The questions on general aptitude and maths were easier than the Mechanical section. 
  • Distribution of Questions: 
    • MCQ: 35
    • NAT: 25
    • MSQ: 5
  • The topics with the highest weightage were Heat Transfer, Manufacturing & Engineering Materials, and Calculus.
  • Questions were also asked from topics like IC engine, fluid mechanics, hydraulic machines, theory of machines, strength of materials, etc.

GATE 2022 ME-2 Paper Analysis

  • The overall difficulty level of GATE ME-2 paper was rated moderate to high. It was similar in difficulty level to the forenoon session paper.
  • The Mechanical section was tough and had more conceptual questions.
  • The questions on general aptitude and maths were much easier than the rest of the sections. 
  • Distribution of Questions: 
    • MCQ: 35
    • NAT: 25
    • MSQ: 5
  • The topics with the highest weightage were Thermal sciences, Manufacturing, and Engineering Mathematics.

GATE 2022 CE-1 Paper Analysis

  • The overall difficulty level of the paper was rated moderate to tough. 
  • General Aptitude section was tough. 
  • Mathematics was rated moderate to tough. 
  • CE-1 paper was more calculative and time-consuming. 
  • Distribution of Questions: 
    • MCQ: 35
    • NAT: 23
    • MSQ: 7
  • The highest weightage topics with 11 marks each were Environment Soil and Geo Tech. 
  • Less weightage of SOM in CE-1 paper with only 1-2 questions from the topic. 
  • 2 Questions from Structure. 
  • Questions were also asked from topics like Modular Ratio, Highway Engineering, Hydrograph, Transportation, Green Shield Distribution, FM. 
  • Unexpected question was from Shear Design in RCC topic. 

GATE 2022 CE-2 Paper Analysis

  • The overall difficulty level of the paper was moderate to tough
  • General Aptitude and Mathematics were rated moderate by test takers. 
  • Distribution of Questions: 
    • MCQ: 34
    • NAT: 24
    • MSQ: 7
  • 1 unexpected question from Structural Design. 
  • High weightage topics were again Environment Soil and Geo Tech. 
  • The overall weightage of questions from each was the same in both forenoon and afternoon session. 

GATE 2022 CSE Paper Analysis

  • The overall difficulty level of the paper was reported to be moderate to tough.
  • The questions were theoretical and conceptual questions.
  • For General Aptitude, the aptitude section was tough.
    • Verbal Ability was easy.
    • Quant was moderate in terms of difficulty.
  • The number of MSQs was high. There were 15 MSQs and 18 NATs.
  • Since the number of MSQs and NATs were high, the paper was lengthy.

  • GATE 2022 ECE paper was conducted on February 6, 2022 in the Forenoon Session.
  • As per the initial student's reaction, the paper was difficult and lengthy. 
  •  There were 14 MSQs and 18 NATs.
  • General Aptitude section was easy to moderate.

  • GATE 2022 IN Paper was held in the Afternoon Session on February 6, 2022. 
  •  There were 5 MSQs and 26 NATs in GATE 2022 IN paper.

GATE 2022 CH Paper Analysis

  • GATE 2022 CH paper was conducted in the afternoon session on February 6, 2022. 
  • The overall difficulty level of the paper was moderate to tough.
  • There were no MSQs in GATE 2022 CH.
  • Meanwhile, the number of NATs was 28 and 27 MCQs.
  • The topics with the highest weightage in GATE 2022 CH were-

GATE Civil Engineering Paper Analysis

Civil Engineering paper for GATE 2020 was held in 2 sessions. Approximately 1.5 lakh students had appeared for the exam. There was an increase in the number of questions from Environment sections in comparison to previous years. The majority of questions were asked from Geotech Engineering and Environment. The other topics were Building Material, Fluid Mechanics, RCC, Steel Structure, Hydrology, Surveying, Transportation, Structural Analysis, SOM.

GATE CE Forenoon and Afternoon Session

  • Timings: 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm
  • Difficulty level: Easy to Moderate
  • General Aptitude was easy. 
  • Geotech Engineering carried the maximum weightage of 15 marks
  • Environmental Engineering carried 14 marks. 
  • 25 questions out of the total were numerically based.
  • The highest weightage was from Geotech Engineering, Environment Engineering and Transportation Engineering.
  • Paper was easier than last year.
  • Most of the questions were asked form Strength of Material, Transportation, H&I, Geotechnical, Structural Analysis,  FM & OCH, RCC, Environmental

GATE Electrical Engineering Paper Analysis

The Electrical Engineering paper of GATE 2020 was of moderate difficulty level. Most of the questions were asked from Electrical Machines, Power Electronics, and Signals & Systems. Other topics in the questions paper were Thevenin’s theorem, Transient analysis, Diodes, OP-AMP, MOSFET, Rectifier, Choppers, Inverter, Electric field, Mutual inductance.

GATE EE Forenoon Session

  • Timings: 9:30 am to 12:30 pm
  • Difficulty level: Moderate
  • Power System carried the maximum weightage of 13 marks
  • 24 questions out of total were numerically based
  • Questions from Analog Electronics were the most difficult. 
  • Electrical Machines and Signals & Systems had a weightage of 13% and 11% respectively.

GATE Mechanical Engineering Paper Analysis

GATE 2020 Mechanical exam was conducted for three hours in the first shift. The 2nd shift of Mechanical Engineering will also be conducted for 3 hours from 2:30 PM – 5:30 PM. There were 65 (multiple choice and numerical answer type) questions in the exam paper for a total of 100 marks in the first shift. GATE ME Forenoon Session

  • Timings: 9:30 am to 12:30 pm
  • Difficulty Level: Moderate
  • General Aptitude Section was easy.
  • Maths section was tough in comparison to last year.
  • Conceptual questions from Design Topics
  • 10 Marks questions were asked from Fluid Mechanics
  • 20+ questions from Numerical Ability. These questions were time taking and lengthy.
  • 2 questions from Vibration Section were tricky
  • 2 or 1 questions from Trusses, Metrology, Forming, Sheet Metal, Convention, Radiation, Heat Exchanger and LMTD.

GATE ME Afternoon Session

  • Timings: 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM
  • Difficulty Level: Moderate to Difficult
  • Candidates found General Aptitude Section to be very easy.
  • Questions from the Thermal section were very easy.
  • Questions from SOM and Production were very difficult and time-consuming.
  • 25+ questions from NAT
  • 16 Marks questions from Manufacturing
  • 12 Marks questions from Thermodynamics
  • Fewer questions from TOM in comparison to last year.

GATE Computer Science Engineering Paper Analysis

Computer Science (CS) exam of GATE 2020 was relatively easier this year. The question paper was not lengthy. Questions from Algorithm, complexity, data structure and computer organizations were tricky. In comparison to last year, the difficulty level of GATE 2020 CS exam was not high. Theoretical questions were more in number as compared to NAT questions.

  • Timings: 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM
  • Difficulty Level: Easy to Moderate
  • General Aptitude section was very easy.
  • Questions form technical section was difficult. 
  • NAT questions were of moderate difficulty.
  • Maximum questions were asked from the Theory of Computation, Operating Systems & Data Structure. 
  • Other topics in the question paper: Double Hashing, Recurrence, Relation, Worst case, Groups, Graph coloring, Time complexity, Post-order traversal, Predicate Logic, Minimum spanning tree.

GATE Instrumentation Engineering Paper Analysis

GATE 2020 Instrumentation Engineering (IN) Paper Analysis is out. For Instrumentation Engineering (IN) Paper, 65 multiple choice questions and numerical answer type questions were asked from Instrumentation Engineering. This analysis will give a fair idea to the candidates who have appeared for the examination about how difficult the paper was, what kind of questions were placed, and what will be the expected cut off for the paper.

  • Timings: 9:30 am to 12:30 pm
  • Difficulty Level: Easy to Moderate
  • General aptitude section was relatively easy and had direct questions
  • The paper was moderately difficult having questions from Network and Control Systems and Signals which were easy to solve.
  • Questions from Digital and Micro Processor, Optical Instrumentation, Transducer, and Measurements, along with Engineering Mathematics were moderately difficult.
  • Analog circuits and Communication Systems were most difficult to attempt.
  • 10 and 11 Marks questions were asked from Networks and Digital & Micro Processor respectively.
  • 6, 7 or 8 mark questions were asked from Communication System, Optical Instrumentation, Control Systems, Transducer, Signal & Systems, Measurements.

GATE Electronics & Communication Engineering Paper Analysis

Candidates who appeared in the GATE 2020 for Electronic and Communications (EC) paper can check the exam analysis here.

GATE ME Paper Analysis 2019

Mechanical Engineering is the most preferred and popular stream amongst engineering aspirants. Given below is the reaction of the students who appeared for the same in GATE 2019:

GATE ME Session 1

  • Timings: 9:30 am to 12:30 pm
  • Difficulty Level: Easy to moderate
  • The General Aptitude section had easy and direct questions.
  • On the technical side, the Math section had about 8 questions (4Qs were of 1 mark and 4Qs. were of 2 marks) and about 47 questions were from ME branch.
  • There were about 26 questions in the NAT section. They were a bit lengthy and evaluated the candidate’s concepts.

GATE ME Session 2

  • Timings: 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm
  • Difficulty Level: Moderate to difficult
  • As per the students, the General Aptitude section had some difficult questions.
  • On the technical side, the Math section had about 8 questions and about 32 questions were from ME branch.
  • There were about 32 questions in the NAT section, 6 questions more than the morning session.

GATE ME Paper Analysis 2018 

Mechanical Engineering paper was conducted on February 4, 2017, in 2 sessions of GATE 2018. The number of conceptual questions was more than calculation based questions. GATE ME Paper Analysis 2017

IIT Roorkee had conducted GATE ME examination in two shifts i.e., morning and afternoon shift. The overall paper was of easy to moderate level. Candidates who had worked hard were able to attempt question paper of 60 marks easily. Tabulated below is the topic-wise analysis of GATE 2017 ME paper.

Mechanical Engineering paper was conducted on January 30, 2016, and January 31, 2016, in 3 sessions.The number of conceptual questions was more than calculation based questions. Analysis

  • Questions aimed at testing the mathematical skills of the candidate were 17% of the total questions asked
  • General Aptitude section had a total of 10 questions carrying 15 marks. 50% of the questions carried 1 mark each and the remaining 5 questions carried 2 marks each
  • The questions in Thermodynamics, Manufacturing Engineering, and Mechanics of Materials were difficult as compared to other sections
  • Mathematics was also easier than the previous year
  • Fluid Mechanics section carried 9marks and was not easy to crack
  • Few questions were asked from the new syllabus
  • Paper wasn’t difficult for the candidates who prepared well for the GATE 2016 exam

Analysis

  • Maximum number of questions were asked from Fluid Mechanics topic, i.e., 8 questions
  • 7 questions each from Manufacturing Engineering and Thermal Science topic
  • Only one question was asked from the Heat Transfer topic
  • 2 questions each from Theory of Machine and Machine Design topics were asked

GATE EC Paper Analysis

For 2020, the exam is scheduled for February 9 in CBT mode. IIT Delhi will hold the exam in approx. 199 cities across India and few centers situated abroad. The analysis for this session will be available shortly.

Ques: Is GATE better for CSE students? Is the paper really tough?

Ques: Is there any repetition of questions in GATE exam?

Ans: Usually no exact questions are asked in GATE exam, but candidates need to understand the pattern/types of questions asked in the exam. Questions with exact data are never asked in GATE but the same type of question with different data and different difficulty may be asked. 

Ques: What will happen if a candidate makes more than one application of the same paper?
