GATE Metallurgical Engineering (MT) 2023 is scheduled to be held on 11th February 2023. Registrations for the same are already closed, IIT Kanpur (conducting body for GATE 2023) is now going to release GATE 2023 Admit Card on January 9, 2023.

GATE MT 2023 will be conducted for admission to M.Tech courses offered at top IIT’s and NIT’s. So, here we will discuss about GATE MT 2023 exam on basis of GATE MT 2023 Syllabus, Exam Dates , Application process, Cut Off’s, Exam pattern for the exam preparations. Given below is a detailed overview for GATE MT 2023 Exam.

The GATE Metallurgical Engineering (MT) Syllabus contains around 7 sections: Engineering Mathematics, Metallurgical Thermodynamics, Transport Phenomena and Rate Process, Mineral Processing and Extractive Metallurgy, Physical Metallurgy, Mechanical Metallurgy and Manufacturing Process. General Aptitude is also a part of GATE Metallurgical Engineering Syllabus consisting about 15% weightage in question paper whereas the remaining section of 85% is covered by core discipline. Metallurgical Engineering (MT) contains study of metals. This study combines knowledge of theory and practical topics which include mining, extraction, design, and processing of metals and how the metals react to the outside nature. Check official site of GATE for new updates on gate.iitk.ac.in.

  • GATE MT 2023 is conducted as a Computer based test (CBT). The exam duration is of 3 hrs.

Section 1: Engineering Mathematics Syllabus

Linear Algebra Matrices and Determinants, Systems of linear equations, Eigen values and Eigen vectors.
Calculus Limit, Continuity and Differentiability; Partial derivatives; Maxima and minima; Sequences and series; Test for convergence; Fourier series.
Vector Calculus Gradient; Divergence and Curl; Line, Surface and volume integrals; Stokes, Gauss and Green’s theorems.
Differential Equations Linear and non-linear first order ODEs; Higher order linear ODEs with constant coefficients; Cauchy’s and Euler’s equations; Laplace transforms; PDEs –Laplace, one dimensional heat and wave equations.
Probability and Statistics Definitions of probability and sampling theorems, conditional probability, Mean, median, mode and standard deviation; Random variables; Poisson, normal and binomial distributions; Analysis of experimental data; linear least squares method.

Laws of Thermodynamics First law – energy conservation, Second law - entropy; Enthalpy, Gibbs and Helmholtz free energy; Maxwell’s relations; Chemical potential; Applications to metallurgical systems, solutions, ideal and regular solutions; Gibbs phase rule, phase equilibria, binary phase diagram and lever rule, free-energy vs. composition diagrams; Equilibrium constant, Activity, Ellingham and phase stability diagrams; Thermodynamics of point defects, surfaces and interfaces, adsorption and segregation phenomena.
Electrochemistry: Single electrode potential, Electrochemical cells, Nernst equation, Potential-pH diagrams.

Section 3: Transport Phenomena and Rate Processes

Momentum Transfer Concept of viscosity, shell balances, Bernoulli’s equation, mechanical energy balance equation, flow past plane surfaces and through pipes.
Heat Transfer Conduction, Fourier’s Law, 1-D steady state conduction.
Convection Heat transfer coefficient relations for forced convection.
Radiation Black body radiation, Stefan-Boltzman Law, Kirchhoff’s Law.
Mass Transfer Diffusion and Fick’s laws, Mass transfer coefficients.
Dimensional Analysis Buckingham Pi theorem, Significance of dimensionless numbers.

Section 4: Mineral Processing and Extractive Metallurgy

Comminution techniques Size classification, Flotation, Gravity and other methods of mineral beneficiation; Agglomeration: sintering, pelletizing and briquetting.
Material and energy balances in metallurgical processes Principles and processes for the extraction of non-ferrous metals – aluminium, copper and titanium.
Iron and steel making Material and heat balance in blast furnace; Structure and properties of slags and molten salts – basicity of slags - sulphide and phosphate capacity of slags; Production of metallurgical coke.
Other methods of iron making (COREX, MIDRE)
Primary Steel Making Basic oxygen furnace, process dynamics, oxidation reactions, electric arc furnace.
Secondary Steel Making Ladle process – deoxidation, argon stirring, desulphurization, inclusion shape control, principles of degassing methods; Basics of stainless steel manufacturing.

X-ray Diffraction Bragg’s law, optical metallography, principles of SEM imaging.
Crystal Imperfections Point, line and surface defects; Coherent, semi-coherent and incoherent interfaces.
Diffusion in Solids Diffusion equation, steady state and error function solutions; Exampleshomogenenization and carburization; Kirkendall effect; Uphill diffusion; Atomic models for interstitial and substitutional diffusion; Pipe diffusion and grain boundary diffusion.

Section 6: Mechanical Metallurgy

Dislocation Theory Edge, screw and mixed dislocations, source and multiplication of dislocations, stress fields around dislocations; Partial dislocations, dislocation interactions and reactions.
Strengthening Mechanisms Work/strain hardening, strengthening due to grain boundaries, solid solution, precipitation and dispersion.

Hot, Warm and Cold Working of Metals Metal forming – fundamentals of metal forming processes of rolling, forging, extrusion, wire drawing and sheet metal forming, defects in forming
Metal Joining Principles of soldering, brazing and welding, welding metallurgy, defects in welded joints in steels and aluminium alloys.
Powder Metallurgy Production of powders, compaction and sintering.

GATE MT 2023- Admission Process

  • For selection in GATE, candidates should follow the admission process and fulfill the eligibility criteria for GATE MT 2023.

GATE MT 2023- Eligibility Criteria

  • Candidates must have a minimum qualification of 10+2+3. Final year undergraduate students can also apply for the GATE MT 2023 exam.
  • Candidates must have graduation degree such as Bachelor's of Technology/Engineering or PG graduation in relevant field.
  • There is no upper age limit for GATE 2023.
  • International students from countries like Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Ethiopia and United Arab Emirates (UAE) can also appear for GATE 2023. Such students should also have the above mentioned equivalent qualifications.

GATE MT 2023- Admissions

Eligible candidates can follow the steps given below to fill the application form and know the further admission process through GATE MT 2023:

  • Application Form for GATE 2023: As per eligibility candidates can apply for GATE 2023, online through the official website at gate.iitkgp.ac.in. Fill the application registration carefully. And then fill the exam form for GATE on GOAPS portal with login id and password correctly. Add your personal details, education qualifications, etc as per requirement.   • Result dates for GATE 2023: GATE 2023 Results date has also been announced. The GATE 2023 results will be released on 16th March 2023.
  • Counselling session for GATE 2023: Candidates who are shortlisted in GATE exam are eligible for GATE counselling. Candidates who have cleared the required cut off for exam are only eligible for GATE Counselling. Candidates willing to take admission in IIT’s will have to appear in COAP Counselling whereas candidates willing to apply for NIT and other top colleges in India have to appear for CCMT counselling.
