IIT BHU: 12 Answered Questions

How are the hostels in IIT BHU?

Yashveer Singh
Oindrila BoseStudied at IIT BHU (2019)

Freshers are allotted these three hostels(the first two are for boys and the last one is for girls): Vishweshvarayya Hostel, S N Bose Hostel, and Gandhi Smriti Mahila Chhatravas.

My brother lived in IIT-BHU Hostel and got to experience all the good and bad of hostel life at IIT-BHU. According to him:

ROOMS

  • The rooms are very small and are shared by 2 to 3 people
  • On first entering, you will not like the rooms at all. The rooms are covered in spider webs everywhere and some of the old used belongings from the previous occupants
  • You will need to clean your room and get all the required items
  • A bed, table, and chair are provided by the hostel administration
  • Cupboards are in-built and you have to share them with your roommate
  • The rooms have hardly any space, but the lawns are big and the hostel corridors are long
  • There’s a sufficient number of washrooms on each floor. Each floor has water coolers.

OTHER FACILITIES: Common rooms, Canteens, Mess, TV Room, Badminton court, TT tables, and lawns. There’s also high-speed internet which can be connected through both, Wi-Fi and LAN

FOOD AND HOSTEL CANTEENS- The food is above average, better than other colleges and most of the other IITs.

Hostel canteens close between 2:30 A.M to 4:00 A.M. Students can still obtain food from within the campus at any time

HOSTEL TIMINGS- Apart from the first few months, there are no in-and-out hostel timings for boys. However, for girls, there is a strict time restriction, 10 PM.

HOSTEL STAFF AND ADMINISTRATION- The hostel staff and administration are friendly and supportive. You can also ask your Maharaja to make a dish that you wish to eat.

You will certainly face some challenges as you try to adjust to your new life. Living in and sharing small rooms with strangers will be difficult at first. You will have to learn to manage with very basic facilities, but as you make more and more friends at your hostel, you will come to enjoy every day that you spend there.

Also, some of these experiences are subjective, while others can also be different for a different academic batch. My brother completed his graduation in 2018.

Which is the best hostel (overall) to live in when at IIT BHU ?

Lubaba Shaheen
Debarati NagStudied Computer Science at Indian Institute of Technology Varanasi (2013)

Aryabhatta Hostel is the best hostel to live in when at IIT BHU. This is due to the following reasons:

  • It is the most recently built hostel i.e. in the year 2016 and has all the latest facilities in the bathrooms and with the doors and windows.
  • The rooms are most spacious among all the hostels in the campus.
  • It’s the nearest to Hyderabad Gate, DG Cornet, and CV Raman.
  • The Swimming Pool is just behind the hostel.
  • The hostel is allotted to the 1st year students in undergraduate, M.Tech, and Ph.D. people.
  • The common hall is so big that you can play cricket there!
  • It’s 3 floors tall and that makes it the only hostel with 3 floors on campus.
  • There’s the best badminton court amongst all hostels and including gymkhana.
  • It has 3 canteens, again the most in a single hostel on campus.

Although this may vary from person to person. Aryabhatta is a hostel which you’d like coming into college as you’ll be having high expectations from college and this is the hostel with the most modern facilities. This might change once you progress in college life and by 4th year you’d love to be in Rajputana and Limbdi Hostels as they’re the centre point of the college and are pretty much near to everything essential for a student.

How is the hostel life in IIT BHU?

Neerendra Singh
Riddhi SarkarB.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology Varanasi (2022)

Hostel life in IIT BHU is pretty wonderful. The institute has 12 hostels, and most of them are about 50-60 years old. The rooms in the old hostels are cramped, unlike the new ones, where rooms are quite spacious. Even then, the rooms are pretty much compact, as the rooms in the new hostels are three-seater. Hostel administration provides a bed, table, and chair. Cupboards are already inside the room, which is shared. In a wholly arranged room with couches, tables, and chairs, there is not much space to walk, but these hostels have very spacious corridors and lawns to make up for it. Vishwakarma Hostel corridors are so long that one will hesitate to go from one end to another. Each of the hostels is equipped with basic facilities like sufficient numbers of bathrooms and water coolers.

Apart from these, hostels have common rooms, canteens, mess, TV Room. Every hostel also has badminton courts, TT tables, lush green lawns. You will have access to high-speed internet, which is available via both Wi-Fi and LAN. The food here is much better than any other IIT. After the first year, students are allowed to keep their own vehicles like bikes and scooters inside the campus. Canteens in all hostels close before 4 AM. But if you have access to any vehicles, you can go to any place in Varanasi to eat out at any time of the day. There are not many restrictions of any type in the hostels.

Hostel staff and administration is amiable, you can reach out to them for any help you need. To sum it up, hostel life in IIT BHU is vivacious, and people make tons of cherished memories here.

Are there bathroom attached hostel rooms in IIT BHU?

Rashmeet Kaur

No, the IIT BHU hostels do not have attached washrooms. Even the rooms are shared, and you won’t get a single seater room facility over here. Most government colleges do not provide their students with premium facilities. IIT BHU is one of them.

Thus, IIT BHU only offers common washrooms to its students in the hostels.

How are the hostel and other amenities in the IIT BHU for M.Tech students?

Abhijeet Singh
Savi Sharma

M.Tech students (boys) of IIT BHU are allotted Aryabhatta Hostel I (Block A&B) and II (Block C&D).

It is a three story building that contains a large common room with TV, and a large dining hall. The hostel mess serves decent quality food. The hostel rooms are quite spacious, and they are two seaters. But whenever there’s a shortage of rooms, three students are allotted for each room, instead of two. But even then, there’s ample space for each occupant.

Each block has a garden. The washrooms are cleaned every afternoon, and are equipped with handwash and geysers. The two hostel canteens have all the basic items (including the basic food items), and their timings are 1:30PM-3AM and 7AM-10PM. On each floor, in each block, hot and cold purified water is available in the coolers. Each occupant is given a wooden cot, a table and a chair, and each room contains two cupboards. Decent wifi facilities are made available. The hostel celebrates every major festival with enthusiasm.

Overall, the M.Tech hostel at IIT BHU is quite decent.

What is the present internet speed in IIT BHU hostels?

Kirti Goyal
Nilesh KumarB.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology Varanasi (2020)

The recent downloading speed is around 6 Mbps during the day as the traffic is very high. During the night the speed definitely increases but the increase is not that significant since people are awake at night too. When you are allotted your hostel rooms you will get an Ethernet cable. The speed might improve if you use the Ethernet instead of the wifi. In recent years a network with 1 Gbps bandwidth has been set up which resulted in good internet speed.

This might look very high speed to some people reading this answer, but actually this is a pretty normal speed considering its an IIT. IIT Roorkee has far better speed than this.

What is the mess menu of IIT BHU?

Rupesh Biswas
Ankita Garkoti

IIT BHU has several hostels, and each one of them has 2-3 messes. Different people are given contracts for each mess, on an annual basis. Around 150-200 students eat everyday in each mess. This entire system ensures that quality food is served in the messes. This many messes can’t have a single menu.

There is no fixed menu as such even if we consider a single mess. The ‘Maharaj’ i.e. the person in charge, keeps on including/removing dishes, based on the prices of raw ingredients. For lunch and dinner, there is roti, two-three kinds of rice, 2-3 kinds of vegetable curries, and 1-2 kinds of dals. Salad forms a part of these meals.

Fruit salads, sweets and cakes are given at least once a week. On Saturdays, poori-chhole and a few snacks are served alongside other regular items. Special food items like 2-3 types of parathas, noodles, dosa, idli, etc. are added to the menu at least once every 2 weeks. Eggs are served twice a week, and paneer items are served to vegetarians. Chicken, fish and mutton are served twice a week. You can pay separately and order egg bhurji, omelet and egg rice anytime from the mess. The mess charge is around Rs. 12,000 per semester.

Overall, the mess menu is quite decent at IIT BHU.

What are the hostel facilities in IIT BHU?

Shobhan DasguptaB.Sc. from Banaras Hindu University (2017)

The institute many hostels for both boys and girls, and most of them are about 50-60 years old. The rooms in the old ones are cramped, unlike the new ones, where are quite spacious. Even then, the rooms are pretty much compact, according to the number of students in a room. When one enters the room for the first time, he will be somewhat reluctant to live here because it will be too filthy with spider webs everywhere in the room, along with some used stuff of previous occupants. Hostel administration offers a bed, table, and chair. Cupboards are already inside the room, which will be shared. In a wholly arranged room with couches, tables, and chairs, there will be no space to walk, but very spacious corridors and lawns make up for it. Apart from these, hostels have common rooms, canteens, mess, TV Room, badminton court, TT tables, lawns, and high-speed internet, accessible via Wi-Fi and LAN.

All the complaints of the students are taken very seriously by the hostel administration. The authorities act promptly on any grievance or criticism of the students. There are no restrictions on the time of entry and exit from the hostel. Also, the food in the hostel messes is much better than any other IIT's mess food. The hostels of IIT BHU are quite good, and they end up being the most cherished places during the time of stay in IIT BHU.

Why is the Dhanrajgiri Hostel (IIT BHU) getting demolished?

Aradhya BanerjeeB.Sc from Banaras Hindu University (2018)

Dhanrajgiri Hostel is among the oldest hostels in IIT BHU. It dates back to the days when the institute was known as IT BHU. In fact, it is the first hostel on the engineering campus of BHU. Naturally, the hostel building is quite old and in need of renovation.

To accommodate the increasing number of students, IIT BHU has decided to demolish the hostel and rebuild it as Boys Hostel - I (S+10) and Dining Block (G+1 floor).
