IIT Patna - Indian Institute of Technology - [IITP], Patna

I am a CSE student at IIT Patna and I will try to justify why choosing IIT Patna for your

CSE is a good decision. Don’t base your choice on how old an institution is. 

All the new IITs like IIT Patna or IIT Jodhpur are doing exceptionally well, some are even competing against the old IITs. IIT Patna has a great campus and it has achieved tremendous success in a short span of time. 

CSE department has a learned and supportive faculty and great seniors. The teams have always performed exceptionally well in the ACM-ICPC and have even made it to the world finals. A good number of students clear the  GSoC( Google Summer of Code). 

NJACK club organizes tutorial classes and workshops on Web development, App development, Android, etc. It also organizes competitions like Capture the Flag, NWoC-an open source coding event, and other competitions throughout the year.

Other interdisciplinary teams which you can join are ROBOCON, Supra BAJA, HPVC etc. 

CSE alums at IIT Patna have made successful startups and others are working in good positions at top MNCs. Overall, the coding culture over here is excellent.

The placements for the CSE department are quite impressive. For 2023 placements, the highest package stood at INR 82.05 LPA. The average package stood at INR 35.57 LPA and the median package stood at INR 32.85 LPA. 98.65% of students from the CSE branch were placed.

In the end, whether you choose IIT Jodhpur, IIT Mandi, IIT Patna, or any other institution, the choice should be based on your personal preference. However, I would suggest you choose IIT Patna CSE as I am quite satisfied with my choice. 

My friend had options of Ph.D. from JU, IIEST as well as IIT Patna and still chose IIT Patna. She claimed that IIT Patna had a better research culture and the professors get work published in very good journals, A/A* conferences, etc. The professors motivate the students for the same and this aspect attracted him the most. However, your personal preferences also come to play here. So consider the following points

• If you want to complete your Ph.D. quickly, JU will serve you better. 
• If you are ready to commit yourself to hard work and increase your publications gradually with your knowledge and time
• IIT Patna students get 2.5lacs per student to go to any conference at a tenure of 5 years.
• If you want to enjoy college life in addition to research work then JU is better. The college ambiance is great with a dynamic city life. 

Choose IIT Patna for its research culture and not the IIT tag.

IIT Patna is easily the better choice than IIT Mandi for CSE. Let’s break down the discussion into simpler topics 

CS Achievements

• IIT Patna was ranked 2nd in Robocon stage I and qualified for nationals beating most other old IITs. 
•  IIT Patna bagged the 7th position in inter IIT Tech Meet held at IIT Madras among all IITs.
• IIT Patna ranked better than IIT Guwahati, IIT Mandi and other top NITs in SUPRA SAEIndia 2018.

Campus Highlights

• IIT Patna has a huge campus that spreads across 504 acres and is amongst the first 2008 2nd gen IITs to get its permanent campus.
• IIT Patna has also constructed a new boys' hostel to improve accommodation facilities.
• IIT Patna is the first among 2nd gen IITs to have its own indoor sports facilities like badminton courts, and squash courts.
• IIT Patna is also building an auditorium, a Lecture hall complex, and an Incubation center.

So we can say that despite being a 2nd gen IIT, IIT Patna has made its strong mark in the educational system. 

Both IIT Patna and IIT Bombay are well-reputed institutes in India. The CSE department is renowned for its experienced faculty, rich alumni network, best placement support, and effective classes. The courses in the Computer Science and Electronics department include compilers, machine learning, computer learning, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, and so on. Students are given both theoretical and practical knowledge. IIT Patna also has club support from the CSE field, namely NJ GATH, and Robotics. The students can effectively explore their ideas in this respective field in an innovative way. The alumni network of the CSE department is fabulous, as they give much support to the students in their studies. The opportunities are far better in the CS field than in civil engineering. So you can opt for IIT Patna.

At IIST, most of the students are inclined towards ISRO. Even if you are interested in it, you might lose interest in the latter half of your bachelor's and then may regret your decision because IIST has very limited career options. That being said, look for an institute that caters to a variety of career prospects so that your options aren't limited. 

Considering the new IITs, both IIT Hyderabad and IIT Patna show promising results. I have a friend in IIT Patna and after a long conversation with him, I realized it has a plethora of opportunities both in terms of placements as well as higher education.

The placement scenario at IIT Patna is great and has been improving every year. 

•  IIT Patna has all big shot companies for placements like Microsoft, Amazon, Cisco, Samsung R&D, UHG, Practo, Yodlee, Flipkart, Arista Networks, Texas Instruments, Finisar, Tata Motors, L&T, Mahindra & Mahindra, Bank of America, etc.
• For those who prefer a stable job, many PSUs like Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, HPCL, DRDO, Coal India, etc come for recruitment here. 
• If you are among the top 1% of your batch you can get placed in companies like Google and Facebook, the pay scale of which is the highest you can get.
• The small batch size increases the probability of getting more placements in top companies than old IITs with huge batch sizes. 

Prospects for higher education:

Only after you become a part of the IIT family will you understand the true essence of the IIT tag that opens infinite doors of opportunities for you be it higher education or internships.

• My friend secured an internship in Germany only because he had ties with the IIT brand they said.
• Out of 37, 4 had the chance to do foreign internships which is a lot
• The students of his batch even went to top universities like Stanford, CalTech, etc. for their summer internships.
• Every year many students get qualified for the DAAD WISE scholarship in Germany, the Charpak scholarship for internships in France, and the MITACS in Canada, etc.
• As for MS and PhDs, around 18 out of 150 students pursued their higher education in US and Europe. Today they are placed in the top companies like Intel Corporation, Texas Instruments, Intersil Corporation, etc. in their respective countries. 

Having covered all career prospects, I will leave it to you to decide which institute to join. 

IIT Patna and VIT are well-established institutes in India. Both of them are excellent at academics, infrastructure, facilities, and a resourceful atmosphere. Let us have a look at the benefits of both the colleges and the courses.

IIT Patna

• This institute was established in 2008. You won’t regret choosing it as you will have the advantage of the brand name IIT. 
• Most companies prefer IITians, and it is also beneficial if you are planning to attend competitive entrance exams like the CAT, GMAT, and so on. 
• But placement support in the field of metallurgical engineering is comparatively low. Students who opt for this course mostly prefer higher studies or research.

Vellore Institute of Technology

• If you are not worried about the brand name, then opt for VIT for computer science. As we know, CS is a vast field that will open ample opportunities in the future. 
• VIT is known for its effective placement support, especially in the CSE department. 
• Top IT companies, including Infosys, TCS, etc., mostly opt for students with a background in computer science.

 So, if you are interested in higher studies, then opt for IIT Patna for metallurgical Engineering or VIT for CS to get placed in top IT companies. 

The preference varies from person to person. Till 2014, BITS Pilani was the best institute, especially for the CSE branch. But today, the IITs gain the leading position as they are rapidly advancing every year. They have better infrastructure and academics than BITS. So, students started to prefer IITs since they have a lower budget than BITS. When it comes to the ranking of IITs, they are increasing every year in CSE. BITS Pilani is not easily accessible to many companies, which has decreased their placement support. IIT Patna offers foreign internships to the students and it is easier to get good CPI here than at BITS

For the MS, IIT Patna is better because, as we know, a tagline has more value on the outside, and you can prove excellence in your field with a good CPI from IIT Patna when compared with BITS Pilani.

IIT Patna's CSE department is known for its exceptional performance and achievements. Here are some highlights that showcase the department's excellence:

• Supportive faculty: In general, faculty members in IITs/NITs are not always supportive or enthusiastic about teaching. However, in IIT Patna's CSE department, most of the professors are very chill and supportive.
• Placement: The placement record of IIT Patna's CSE department is remarkable. Students with a CPI greater than 7 have a 100% placement rate. The average package offered is around 15 LPA, and the highest goes up to 50 LPA (last year's data). Students like Ashutosh Agarwal have even received a package of 1.8 crores from Google.
• Achievements: IIT Patna has achieved remarkable heights in a short span of time. Five students from the first year successfully cleared Google Summer of Code (GSoC) this year. Recently, the ACM-ICPC, a world-level coding competition, was conducted in China, and IIT Patna stood second (among Kolkata zone) and 56th worldwide. IIT Patna was the only "new" IIT to qualify for the World Finals.
• Coding culture: The coding culture in IIT Patna's CSE department is very exciting compared to similar IITs. Students are encouraged to participate in coding competitions and hackathons.
