This is perhaps the major reason why IIITs are underrated. IIIT Allahabad and IIIT Hyderabad are around 20+ years old. In spite of being comparably new, IIIT Allahabad is constantly ranked among the top technological institute in the country for IT.

What is the college timing of NIT Trichy, NIT Surathkal, MNNIT Allahabad, IIIT Allahabad?

At NITK Surathkal, Saturdays are holidays for all the students. In the first year, timings depend upon your section. It has about 23 hours of classes every week. These can be: Between 8 AM to 3 PM - Monday and Thursday. Between 8 AM to 3 PM - Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. The schedule can be altered as per the student’s convenience with the help of the class representatives (CRs). In the second year onwards, the schedule depends on the branch in which you belong. For example, the mining branch has 20 hours per week, CSE and ECE have 25-28 hours per week, while the mechanical department has around 35 hours per week. There are extra classes at the end of the trimester. At NITK Trichy the college time is usually 8:30 AM - 3:10 PM. Sometimes, it may extend to 4-5 PM. There is a lunch break from 12:10 – 1:30 PM. At MNNIT Allahabad the classes are held from Monday to Friday. Saturday and Sunday are holidays. In the first year, all students study general subjects from 9 AM – 5 PM. The lectures are 30 hours a week. In the second and the third year for the core subjects, the classes are 8 AM – 6 PM, i.e., 40 hours a week. The CSE/IT batch has only 25-30 hours per week. In the last year, classes are rarely held in the institute. The lectures are approximately 12-15 hours a week.

What are some interesting proxy/attendance stories at IIIT Allahabad?

There was a guy Tarun Agarwal of the Electronics Branch and a faculty, Shirshu Verma. I heard this story from a friend. According to him, no one knew what kind of bond these two people had. Looking at them together, nobody could distinguish who is the teacher and who is the student. Tarun never attended Shirshu Sir’s classes but he had 100% attendance. Usually, some of the other students used to make a proxy for others. When nobody used to make a proxy of Tarun, then he used to mark his attendance. And this happened not once or twice but frequently. In fact not only attendance, but he also used to give him full marks in all his subjects. There might be some secret of Shirshu Sir that only Tarun knows. Most of the batch used to think so. There are endless proxy stories in engineering batches and every story is better than the other.

What happend on your first day at IIIT Allahabad?

My brother attended IIT Allahabad. His first day was normal and hectic with all the admission procedures and formalities. But his first-class experience was quite amusing. Here is how it went. One or two days after admission, he is taking the campus tour with our parents. While entering CC - 3 (Computer Center -3), my father casually asked the guard, ‘Where are the classrooms for freshers?’ To this question, the guard replied the classes have started from that day only from 10 A.M. It was around 10:25 A.M by then and my brother had no idea or any notebook with him. My parents kind of pushed him to attend his first class anyway. He was already 30 mins late. He took a quick peek at the class and according to him, the professor looked lenient. So, he took a chance and tried to sneak in quietly. Nonetheless, the professor saw him and asked, ‘Are you 30 mins late for this class or 30 mins too early for the next one?’ In response, the whole class burst out in laughter. Later he got to know the said professor was the HOD of the Mathematics department. Needless to say, it was quite a start for my brother.

What are some of the things that a freshman needs to know when they enter into IIIT Allahabad?

IIIT Allahabad is strict regarding attendance rules. Try to maintain the minimum required attendance criteria to be safe. The academics here are difficult. Even if you understand the concepts, it won’t be easy to keep up with the coursework. You need to put in regular effort to score decent marks. IIIT Allahabad has an active coding culture. Try to take advantage of it. You will get the required guidance and support from the seniors.

Which are some of the popular restaurants near IIIT Allahabad and how far are they?

This question can be answered thus: even though IIIT Allahabad is an esteemed institute in the top 100 list of the NIRF Engineering colleges rankings, and with a placement rate of above 95%; its shortcoming is its location. So youd have to walk more than two to three kilometers to find any decent restaurant. Although if youre willing to travel into the city area, up to 8-9 kilometers away from the location, youd find plenty of good eateries in Civil Lines (CL). Youll see that most of your seniors and batchmates will be out during weekends to go to CL for a dining experience at KFC, McDonalds, or Dominos; away from the mess food. If youre fine with a desi-eating experience, then Maliks Dhaba should be your place to eat delicious parathas near the college. Also, 16 Kms away from the Yamuna Bridge is the Baba Ka Dhaba, structured in the highway Dhaba style, and if not that, then a forest-themed restaurant known as Friends Forever is the closest to IIIT Allahabad, just 300 meters away.
