What are the chances of getting into top B-schools (IIMs, XLRI, FMS, and JBIMS) with 55% in class 10, 56% in class 12, and being from a commerce background?

AS

MBA BM, XLRI (2018)

Academic performance and background, are important factors in the admission process for top B-schools such as IIMs, XLRI, FMS, and JBIMS. However, they are not the only criteria considered during the admission process. Other factors such as work experience, extracurricular activities, leadership skills, and performance in entrance exams such as CAT/XAT/MAT are also given significant weightage.

Having 55% in class 10 and 56% in class 12, and being from a commerce background may not be considered an ideal academic background for admission to top B-schools. However, a candidate's academic performance is evaluated in conjunction with other factors such as entrance exam scores, work experience, and extracurricular activities.

It is worth noting that top B-schools are extremely competitive, and admission to these institutes is based on a holistic evaluation of a candidate's profile. Some B-schools may have minimum cut-offs for academic performance in class 10 and 12, while others may not have such specific criteria. Therefore, it is difficult to predict the chances of admission based solely on academic performance.

To increase the chances of admission to top B-schools, candidates can consider the following:

  • Perform well in entrance exams such as CAT/XAT/MAT, which are the primary criteria for admission to most B-schools.
  • Gain relevant work experience in a reputed organization to demonstrate practical knowledge and skills.
  • Participate in extracurricular activities such as sports, cultural events, social initiatives, etc., to showcase leadership and teamwork abilities.
  • Write a strong statement of purpose and prepare well for the personal interview round, as these are critical components of the admission process.

While academic performance is an important factor in the admission process for top B-schools, it is not the only criterion. Candidates with lower academic performance can still have a chance of admission if they perform well in entrance exams and showcase relevant work experience, extracurricular activities, and leadership skills.

What subjects should I choose in 11th if I want to do the IPM course in IIM Indore?

VJ
Veer Jain Posted On : June 15th, 2023
Studied at Integrated Programme in Management, IIM Indore (2019)

It should be Physics-chemistry-Maths-Computers if one wants to maximize their chances of selection and perform well in IPM.

Reasons:

The IPMAT has nearly IITJEE-level maths. The IPMAT consists of two sections: maths (quantitative aptitude and data interpretation, reasoning).

The first three years of IPM require at least nine courses in maths and statistics. Differential Calculus, Integral Calculus, Probability, Sampling Distribution & Statistical Inference, Linear Programming, Numerical Analysis, Optimisation, and other subjects are covered.

Furthermore, other computer-related courses are required. Object Oriented Design, Programming and JAVA, Data Analytics, Data Structure, C, Algorithms, DBMS, Web Development, and so on.

While there are ten courses linked to economics, practically all of them take a more mathematical approach. Except for 5-6 sessions out of 200, classes 11-12, economics is not particularly useful for those.

Why the commerce stream is ineffective - There is only one accounting course. Some management fundamentals and business law courses. While an accounting course may be preferable, I doubt it is difficult to learn. None of those other topics are covered in Commerce 11-12.

PCMC is typically present in 60% of the batch. Only 5% of 11-12 grade students have no math skills, owing to several diversity policies and affirmative actions. This track also aids in hedging one's prospects of admission to other institutions, including BITS Pilani's UG and integrated programs, IISER, ISI, and IITs.

While commerce in 11-12 assists in BBA, IPM is not the same as BBA+MBA, therefore please do not mistake it for that widespread and incorrect misconception.

P.S. - If you are weak in maths or dislike maths, you should avoid IPM at IIM Indore. Other IPMs and a variety of other institutes would be a better fit for you.

Is an MBA necessary to start a career in HR? If yes, is an MBA from any college or only from top B-schools like IIM, XLRI, FMS, and MDI?

RS
Rajdeep Sengupta Posted On : July 6th, 2021
MBA BM, XLRI (2019)

A career in Human Resources (HR) does not strictly require one to have an MBA degree but it will definitely be useful to have an MBA degree. The MBA degree not only adds value to your career in HR management but also provides you with far more opportunities in that area. It broadens the opportunities for you and it also highlights you for HR-specific jobs especially during the early years of your career.

MBA can be done from any institute irrespective of private or government or some other criteria however it is preferable to do it from the top B-schools. Degrees from some institutions are considered of more value than others and are given more preference when it comes to placements and getting a job in the corporate world. When it comes to HR degrees from institutes like XLRI, MDI, TISS are more valued than most of the MBA schools present in our country and they are specifically known for their HR course.

These institutes provide excellent education and the best of the best exposure in the management sectors. Doing MBA from institutes such as IIM, XLRI, FMS, MDI, NMIMS etc will give you a boost up in the initial stages.

Since you seem to be interested in NITIE, IIT Bombay, and FMS, I assume your inclination is towards management courses in operation, supply chain, systems, and engineering. In my opinion, there are 2 things you can do,

  • You should sit for CAT and target the top 10 colleges in India, with the most preferred being IIT Bombay and NITIE.
  • Find a suitable course in the top 20 universities abroad and apply with GRE

Please note that this is just my personal opinion and your career goals may differ so make a decision based on your inclinations only.

Should an IIT Delhi graduate in B.Tech mechanical join IIM Kozhikode with 2 years of analyst experience and with a salary of 14 lacs?

PGDM from Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Kozhikode (2020)

If you are looking for institutes on the basis of what ROI they are offering then do not go for IIM Kozhikode. It is a good institute of course but for someone who graduated from IIT Delhi, IIM Kozhikode may not meet their expectations.

However, if you are unfazed by the course fee that involves getting admission to IIM Kozhikode then you would be making a very good choice.

Also, you need to ask yourself why you want to do an MBA. If it is because you want to switch your career from technical to managerial roles then choosing IIM Kozhikode will be a good option.

How do I take admission in MCA (regular degree) while having BCA from PTU?

PC
Pranshu Bardhan Choubey Posted On : September 20th, 2021
Studied at University School of Information and Communication Technology (USICT) (2017)

In Northern India, there are several reputable colleges that enable students from BCA to take regular MCA courses. You won't have any difficulty gaining admission if you have a 10+2 mathematics level. I can tell you about Guru Nanak Dev University, which is located in Amritsar, Punjab. It performs an admission entry for MCA. The test takes place on the campus of Amritsar.

The curriculum covers :

  • English
  • Basic Engineering Mathematics and
  • Computer Problems.

For computers, weighting is the most important. Various universities such as DU, JNU, and PU accept single entrances. I am not, however, convinced of their suitability for distance training.

What if I got an offer letter from IIM Trichy but don’t want to join? Will I get a refund of Rs 20,000, which I paid to know the waitlist?

SG

The simple answer to your question is no. If you do receive an admission offer after paying the remittance fees and are not joining of your own will, then the waitlist remittance fee will not be refunded. It will be refunded only under these circumstances

  1. If you withdraw your willingness by claiming a refund through the admission portal before the release of the admission offers
  2. If you do not withdraw your willingness but do not receive admission offers also your 20000 will be refunded.

Under no other circumstances will your remittance fee be refunded.

What are the criteria of the IIM A, B, C, L to get a call from? Also, what are the criteria for the FMS, Narsee Monjee, XLRI, SP Jain?

SP
Sumit Pandey Posted On : June 14th, 2021
Worked at Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Ltd.

Every institute has its own criteria for the admission process. Most of the B-schools consider CAT scores.

In the case of IIM’s, IIM A and IIM C consider CAT scores and give weightage to CAT score only. But IIM B along with a good CAT score prefers your 10th, 12th, and graduation performance along with your work experience and the kind of work experience that you have.

To get into top B-schools you need to strengthen your profile with various kinds of social and extracurricular activities that you have participated in the schools and college. You also need to perform well in your WAT and personal interview. You should provide proper and logical reasoning for your answers.

For more details, you should check the websites of these institutes and keep checking the previous year’s cutoffs.
