How do you rate getting an MBA from a new IIM like IIM Ranchi or IIM Trichy? Should one wait a year and try getting into better B schools instead?

AA
Anamica Agarwal Posted On : January 20th, 2023
Ph.D from Indian Institute of Management Ranchi (Graduated 2017)

IIM Ranchi's MBA placement drive for 2022 saw 77 companies visit the campus for recruitment. The highest and average packages offered during this placement drive were INR 42 LPA and INR 16.62 LPA, respectively.

IIM Trichy's final placement report for 2022 showed that the institute attracted over 110 industry giants who offered a variety of job roles in Sales & Marketing, Finance, Consulting, IT & Analytics, Operations, and HR. The highest and average packages offered during this placement drive were INR 34 LPA and INR 17.01 LPA, respectively.

There are several ways to compare the quality of MBA programs at new IIMs such as IIM Ranchi and IIM Trichy. One method is to look at student performance and perception as reflected in B-school surveys. You can also try finding information about the experiences of graduates from these institutes. Another way to gauge the quality of an MBA program is to look at the performance of students in competitions, such as recruitment challenges, quizzes, paper presentations, and management fests. While these events can provide insight into student abilities, they may not necessarily reflect the capabilities of the faculty at a given institute.

To get a better understanding of the faculty of an MBA program, you may want to consider the learning approach of the program. A good MBA program will have faculty members who have both studied the subject area extensively and have practical experience in the field. You can also look at the clubs and events related to marketing at the institute, as well as any visiting faculty, guest lectures, workshops, or training that have been held in the last one to two years. A reputable institute should make this information publicly available.

Can a person graduating from IIMs like LIK and even the new IIMs like Ranchi and Trichy ever catch up to the graduates from ABC and get a similar package?

HN

Senior Consultant at Oracle (company)

There are three categories in which the answer can be seen:

  • Students who have graduated from IIM LIK can catch up to IIM ABC relatively easily or may end up at the same level by the end of their postgraduate program. IIM Trichy will eventually catch up with IIM LIK, though it may take around 5 years. IIM Ranchi, on the other hand, will take longer to reach the same level.
  • IIM LIK catching up with IIM ABC may take 3-8 years. With the presence of good FMCG/Consulting/Financial Services Companies, a jump or two could bring them to the same level. IIM Trichy and Ranchi will take a very long time to catch up with IIM ABC in this category.
  • The top 10% of students from IIM LIK and IIM ABC evolved as toppers after at least 18 months of hard work. There will be a significant difference between anyone in this category, regardless of whether they are from IIM ABC or LIK. While there may be a difference in starting packages due to the reputation of the institute, it will be made up for in subsequent years. It is not clear how long it will take for students from IIM Trichy or Ranchi to reach this level.

How is the classroom experience at IIM Kashipur?

MB
Mahima Bhalla Posted On : January 13th, 2023
M.B.A. from Indian Institute of Management Kashipur (Expected 2023)

Here is the classroom experience of one of the IIM Kashipur students who started in September and had online classes until October. The classes were being held in hybrid mode once a significant number of students had arrived on campus and things appeared to be improving.

It was wonderful to return to the traditional teaching methods of the classroom during his offline classes and learn from our professors in person rather than only through screens. Comparing in-person sessions to online ones, the level of interaction and student participation was significantly higher. Their teachers would cold call them to find out how we interpreted the case's specifics, so everyone had to be prepared with case readings and analyses.

Because no one can see what you are doing on the screen in an online class, you can do some pending work, but in an offline classroom, you must be completely attentive and responsive to the questions posed by the teacher. This made their schedule even more difficult because other tasks needed to be completed at different times of the day.

Overall, the offline MBA experience is unique and serves the true purpose of pursuing an MBA degree where the schedule is hectic and you need to manage everything at your fingertips by increasing your efficiency and working quickly with your teammates. He finds it to be an enthralling experience.

How safe is it to study at IIM Calcutta?

AJ
Arshit Jain Posted On : December 23rd, 2022
Studied at IIM Calcutta

Despite IIM Calcutta’s fatigue, people appear to support the cause of not allowing other harmless traditions to continue.

And, given the current political propaganda, it is not very safe. It arises from deep internal insecurities in order to maintain the illusion of power. Some seemingly innocuous traditions are problematic and occur on a regular basis. So you have a very safe campus where your sexuality is never mentioned. Then there are those who fight for their cohorts while ignoring their flaws.

How academically intense is the MBA at IIM Calcutta?

AS
Anurag Sharma Posted On : December 15th, 2022
PGP-PGDM from Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (Graduated 2019)

The curriculum at MBA Calcutta is pretty intense. This is because the students here are equally talented and tough competition is required to maintain the rigor. Some features that make the curriculum at IIM Calcutta extensive are:

  • Seminars

  • Practicals

  • Laboratory sessions

  • Live projects, simulations and role-play activities

  • Occasionally classes are taught by industry experts from peer schools or from abroad

  • Consistent revision of the course

All these make IIM Calcutta one of the most academically intense institutions in India. The competition here is tough because of the batch size as well as the rigid grading system.

Does FORE school reopen its application forms after the CAT results?

AR
Ahana Roy Posted On : July 8th, 2022
PGDM in Marketing & Information Technology, FORE School of Management

Yes, FORE School of Management usually reopens registration after CAT results are declared. In fact, many tier 2 B-Schools do the same after CAT results are announced to extend another chance to the students aspiring to pursue MBA.

However, keep in mind that the decision of reopening the application process lies entirely with the institute.

What should I do? Should I take a drop and prepare for the JEE Advanced again or just take KJ Somaiya (local college)?

AG
Arpita Ghosal Posted On : April 12th, 2021
KJ Somaiya

Taking one year drop and preparing for the JEE Advanced again will be beneficial. Here I am sharing one of my cousin’s experiences which may help in deciding.

  • One of my cousins was in the same situation somewhat similar to yours. He took JEE for the first time in 2014 and the results were not as expected.
  • He didn’t score well in his JEE Main and score a rank below 14k. He had no decent options as he did not take any other exam.
  • He was disappointed with the whole situation. It did take him a couple of days to be getting back to normal. But he was not going to settle for less.
  • He decided to take a chance again and work hard for what he deserves and took another attempt at preparation.
  • For the initial few months, he did not feel like studying but as time passed he developed an interest and started working hard. Some difficulties came but as for that time he dealt with them.
  • He took the exams again and the results were JEE Main: 230 and finally JEE Advance: 8.9k. This time he had many options.

The gist of all of this is that if you or anyone, who sincerely believes that he/she is capable of something more, something greater and they are not what the results are reflecting then there is no point in settling with what you are getting. Don’t listen to someone who says college does not matter. College matters, not the name but the environment, the professors, the culture, and in many other ways.

The experience I shared may not the best example for this case, but many had worse results in the first attempt but did better after taking a year’s drop.

I am planning to take admission in PUMBA for MBA Finance. How are the placements and what kind of roles are offered to core finance students?

TA
Tejas Agarwal Posted On : May 2nd, 2023
Student at DMS PUMBA

Choosing PUMBA for an MBA in Finance is a decent choice. Due to the fact that this college's MBA graduates' average salary is 8.10 LPA.

During their recent placement drive, PUMBA received about 122 businesses, and their highest offer to date was 18 LPA. Their tuition fee is also a little expensive given the campus area (414 acres) and the location in Maharashtra.

Can I easily change my branch in IET Lucknow, or does it depend upon the seats available in my category?

SC
Shivangi Chaudhary Posted On : August 6th, 2021
B.Com at Janki Devi Memorial College, Delhi University

My brother is an alumnus of IET Lucknow and here is his input about the branch change policy. It entirely depends on a variety of criteria, including your first-year grades, seat availability, and, most significantly, your terms with the administrative wing.

I'd like to emphasize what I'm trying to communicate.

  • People say that first-year grades don't matter, or that first-year is just for fun. But if you want to change branches, you must maintain a CGPA of at least 9.0, implying that you are an above-average student in the class.
  • The second and most significant factor is the availability of seats in your selected branch. If no seats are available, you will not be allowed to change branches, even if you have outstanding marks.
  • The third issue is your relationship with the administrative wing. As it is the wing where you will acquire all the information about branch changes.

By the way, each college has its set of rules for branch changes, but the majority of colleges follow the methods outlined above when dealing with branch changes.
