Which is better, CSE at DTU or civil engineering at IIT Roorkee if my inclination is towards CSE?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : April 12th, 2023

If you are sure about your interest in CSE, DTU is the best option for you. However, if you are yet to identify your area of interest then go through the following parameters

  • Placement: DTU has ties with huge CSE companies like Amazon, and Microsoft that offer excellent packages to the students even better than Civil at IIT Roorkee. I know many friends from NSITs and DTU that work in Microsoft today.
  • Research: The CS department is undoubtedly better in terms of research work and opportunities than the Civil.
  • IAS: For IAS, the most preferred branch is Civil. However, if you do for Roorkee, you will have limited options for coaching which can be easily sought at IIT Delhi
  • MBA: Again, because of better coaching institutes, IIT Delhi is better to prepare for CAT.

Once you are sure of your inclination making a decision won’t seem so difficult!

Which is the best coaching for GATE or IES in Allahabad?

In Allahabad, Gateforum is pretty reputed among GATE/IES aspirants. But the coaching goes on for long hours. You will be exhausted by the time, all the classes are done. If you can cope with their hectic schedule, go for it. Mechasoft is another coaching that you can check out.

Is branch change possible in NIT Patna?

RT
Raktim Tarafdar Posted On : August 29th, 2023

Yes, branch change is certainly possible in NIT Patna. To be eligible for branch change, you need to maintain a CGPA above 8.25 in the first year. When the college re-opens in July, the forms for branch change will be available and the students willing to get their branch changes can submit their applications. You will however need the following for a smooth branch change

  1. You will need original Grade cards for the first two semesters. For this, all you need to do is write an application to the academics for the same.
  2. You will have to fill out an application form, available on the website. You can list your preferences here.
  3. You will also require an application regarding the change of branch from A to B, that is signed by the HOD of the department and forwarded to the dean.

Why do toppers choose IIT-Bombay when IIT-Madras has been number 1 for quite some time?

AJ
Advait Joshi Posted On : March 29th, 2023
Lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

While academically, both institutes give tough competition to each other, there are certain minor aspects that distinguish them and make IIT Bombay a much more preferred choice than IIT Madras.

Climate: Although both Mumbai and Chennai are particularly known for their hot climate, IIT Bombay still has moderate climate conditions in November and December which are hot months in Chennai.

Food: Chennai has a limited variety of cuisines specializing mainly in South Indian food. The North Indian food is just average and for a better taste, you will have to go to an expensive restaurant. Mumbai on the other hand satisfies all taste buds from idli, vadas to Butter chicken. Even the fast food is much better than in Chennai.

Job opportunities: While both Mumbai and Chennai offer amazing job opportunities, Bombay definitely covers more sectors. IT and Automobile job opportunities are in abundance at IIT Madras. IIT Bombay being the commercial capital has opportunities in the corporate sector. It also has the biggest port nearby.

Cost of Living: Chennai is way cheaper than Mumbai in terms of food, restaurants, recreation, lodging, etc. However, traveling expenses are equal or cheaper in Mumbai.

Cleanliness: Chennai is cleaner than Mumbai and so is its seawater. Mumbai has a lot of slums which lowers the cleanliness factor a bit. New Bombay is however very clean.

Public transportation: Mumbai has better transport facilities than Chennai. In Chennai, buses are crowded but less crowded than trains. Taxis, trains, and the Metro are very expensive. In Mumbai, trains are more crowded than buses. Metro is the most preferred transport in Mumbai. Taxis and autos are limited but cost average.

Exploration: Chennai has many beaches, and male and movie tickets are also cheaper than in Mumbai. Mumbai has Juhu, Bandra, the Gateway of India, and many other famous spots. It has theme parks and pubs in plenty too.

In short, both IITs have their own strengths and weaknesses with IIT Bombay having a slightly higher advantage compared to Madras.

How did the IIT Bombay develop you as a person?

PG
Pratik Gandhi Posted On : March 21st, 2023
B.Tech. CSE, IIT Bombay

The answer is based on the experience of my sister who joined IIT Bombay to pursue her Masters. She was enthralled by the IIT Bombay infrastructure and culture. IIT Bombay has a lot to offer in terms of food, sports facilities, good classrooms, good professors. The thing that excited her the most was the research culture of which the institute is a flag bearer of. She got to interact with professors with excellent research papers and awards. The professors motivated her a lot and said that success at IIT Bombay Is possible only if your work is helpful for society.

This impacted my sister a lot and she started working on a project related to the petrochemical industry. The project guaranteed to save 100 Cr for a company in a year. She worked hard and conducted almost 300 experiments to get the final result. Surprisingly, she was awarded the best paper award in the Industry Applications category, and 41st National conference on Fluid Mechanics and Fluid Power held at IIT Kanpur.

During her final day she had to complete her Masters' thesis and for this she selected a very tough professor for bher project to make it all the more challenging. The projects she chose were the most difficult but had the highest chances of getting a latent. Many peers advised her to reconsider but she was stubborn about it and amazingly enough she got the patent filed on 7th June 2017.

IIT Bombay helped her dream and achieve it.

Is 75% attendance compulsory at MNNIT Allahabad even if I am sick?

RS
Rishav Sinha Posted On : November 28th, 2023
Studied at Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology, Allahabad

This is my personal experience-

I completed my B.Tech IT from MNNIT Allahabad a few years back. When I was in my second year, I contracted a serious bacterial infection and was bedridden for a month. Due to this, I faced a severe shortage of attendance. However, to take care of this, I contacted all my teachers and explained to them my case. They were all very understanding and cooperative.

But when I attended a practical class some time later, one of my teachers called me to his office due to a shortage of attendance in his lectures. I then realized that I had forgotten to contact him, and explain to him my case. Despite trying to talk to him about my problem, he refused to listen to me and sent my name to the Dean Academic’s office (along with the names of others who had a low attendance in his lecture). I tried reaching out to the HOD, but it was too late by then. Ultimately, I had to sit for the supplementary exams.

The takeaway is to be aware and not miss your lectures, unless seriously ill. But if you face something like I did, make sure that your parents get in touch with the HOD and all your teachers, and explain to them about your condition in detail. There are some teachers who do not listen to the students’ problems and arrive at hasty conclusions, beware of them.

Why is IISc so underrated when it's at par with, if not better than IITs, NSIT, NITs, BITS Pilani etc.?

AB
Aditi Banerjee Posted On : August 23rd, 2023
Lives in Bangalore

IISc isn’t underrated, instead, it is not overhyped. As Indians, we tend to put our financial security above everything else. IISc is known primarily for its research and there is a common perception in our country that a career in research is not very financially stable. Also, while the media heavily praises and highlights the grand packages of other institutions, IISc is not given much limelight for its contribution to the field of research. In fact, the research of IITs, NITs, BITs, NSUT, etc. isn’t given any publicity as well. We focus more on salaries and job titles, and give less importance to research.

For a student who knows his field well and closely follows the developments in Science and Technology, IISc is a very respectable and admirable institution. Getting into IISc is not a cup of tea, it requires a lot of hard work and dedication.

Thus, IISc is as good an institution as IITs, NSIT, BITS, NITs, etc. You should definitely join it if you want a career in research.

Why should I take Production Engineering at NIT Trichy?

Sabeer Chalana Posted On : July 20th, 2023

Production Engineering has a majority of Mechanical syllabus but the value of both the degrees is piles apart. One of my friends was a student of Production Engineering and he completed his graduation in 2013. Today, he is working in a PSU NTPC. He told me that a student who does BTech in Production Engineering has a variety of future aspects some of which have been listed below

  • You can sit for placements for companies like Hero Motocorp, Honda, Hyundai, Ashok Leyland, etc. but not if you are looking for a job in public sector companies.
  • You can go for PSUs that accept this degree like
  • NTPC, SAIL, BHEL, ISRO, Vizag Steel, NPCIL, etc.
  • If you have an interest in CS, you can also target your IT/software or Data analyst profiles which are available in abundance during placements.
  • You can prepare for competitive exams like CAT/GRE if you plan to pursue an MBA or MS.
  • You can steer your career towards entrepreneurship which does not require a very high-level degree.

These were some of the options and reasons why you can take Production Engineering at NIT Trichy.
