How many students are able to change their branch in IIT Roorkee?

RS
Raghavendra Sachdeva Posted On : April 14th, 2023
studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee

Around 2-3 seats are available in every branch at IIT Roorkee for branch change. One seat is saved for the reserved category. Here are a few reasons why branch change is a tedious task in IIT Roorkee

  • You are required to change your branch right after the first semester giving you less time to prepare for your exams. You will also have no chance to score better in the second semester.
  • All the semester exams are purely theoretical which is a bit difficult for students to cope with
  • IIT Roorkee branch change requires a higher CGPA because of fewer seats available. For CS 10, for ECE and Electrical 9.7, and for others 9.4 at least. Such high CGPA results in tough competition among peers

The point is, change your branch only if extremely necessary because one, you will have to commute yourself to the fullest and second every branch has its own scope so it’s better to explore than make a hasty decision.

What should the time table be for a first year student at IIT Roorkee?

AS
Anuj Sinha Posted On : April 15th, 2023
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (2021)

College life needs to be different from school life in the sense that you shouldn’t restrict yourself to a timetable and be flexible to explore everything.

Look around yourself and involve yourself in everything. Explore your interests. Manage your time well so that you don’t miss on academics too.

Extracurricular activities are a must. It’s better to take part in sports or enter a club. With so much to do, you will surely have to manage your time well. But that doesn’t mean you require a timetable. Any leftover work can be completed during weekends You can even remain slightly behind for the weekdays but try to catch up on the weekends.

Attending classes regularly and practicing tutorials will save you a lot of time and effort during exams.

For exams, give preference to important topics first. Solve previous years' papers.

Lastly, take care of your health!

How is biotech at IIT Roorkee?

SM
Soumyadeep Mahapata Posted On : April 15th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee

Biotechnology is a research-oriented branch with great scope in the same. The core job prospects within India are scarce but in abundance outside India. This is because of the high demand for this branch outside India.

This branch is expected to grow in the near future in India too, but as of now most Biotechnology students only prefer foreign countries mainly US or Europe for research and jobs.

Non-core job opportunities are unlimited spreading across various fields like Coding, Software jobs, Data analysis, Data Scientist, and UPSC among many others. Keeping in mind the usual trend, most IIT Roorkee students belonging to the Biotechnology branch opted for Non-core placements and only a handful continued their interest in research work.

It all boils down to your performance throughout the 4 years and your personal preferences. Be it core or non-core, IIT Roorkee has opportunities for everyone.

For MSc in Geology, which will be the better option? IIT Roorkee or ISM Dhanbad?

AR
Aditi Roy Posted On : April 15th, 2023
lives in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India

The choice of the Institute depends on where your interest lies. If you want to study core Geology, then 3-year MSc(tech) course is an excellent option. Both the institutes have below-average core placements with ISM fairing a tad bit better. Irrespective of the Institute and branch, to secure placements you need to be among the top rankers.

My cousin had to choose between IIT Kharagpur‘s MSc in Geophysics and ISM’s MSc(tech) in Geology. She went for Geophysics eventually as he did not consider it wise to waste 3-years in a post-graduate program. In Fact, many of her batchmates dropped IIT Roorkee’s geology and went for Geophysics at IIT KGP. They did not find the teaching and quality of education at IIT Roorkee’s Geology branch as per IIT standards.

I would suggest you go for ISM. But if you too share the same opinion as mine and don’t want to waste 3 years, go for Roorkee and prepare for GATE from the start.

What are the pros and cons of studying ECE in IIT Roorkee?

SM
Soumyadeep Mahapata Posted On : April 14th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee

A few pros and cons of being a student in the ECE department of IIT Roorkee are

Cons

  • The faculty has little interest in teaching and the pedagogy and evaluation methods adopted are obsolete.
  • The curriculum is old school and is irrelevant to the current industry demands.
  • Some labs are poorly maintained with no replacement of faulty equipment
  • You will lack employability because of no awareness of modern-day techniques, practices, and skills required by a good ECE Engineer.
  • Teaching is mostly theoretical with less practical explanation and implementation.
  • Students prefer noncore jobs and thus lose interest in the core ECE field
  • Apt of irrelevant courses need to cover just for credits

Pros

  • The department is located in the same building as that of CS and thus you will be sharing some courses and electives with CS students making you more employable.
  • You will have an edge over others because most software companies prefer ECE and CSE students over other branches.
  • The excellent reputation and alumni network will fetch you great research internships from abroad.

After weighing the pros and cons of both, make a decision that will help you shape a better career.

Which is better: IIT Delhi Energy Studies or IIT Roorkee Systems and Control?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : April 15th, 2023
lives in New Delhi

I am eligible to answer this question as my sister is a pass out from IIT Delhi, Energy Studies. According to her, the primary step is to determine what you want from your degree; is it a brand name you are after or do you want a better branch that offers quality MTech education?

As far as Energy Studies are concerned, the career prospects from campus are bleak with only 1-2 students getting placed from the entire branch. This branch is suited for those who are preparing for IES IAS. This is because the workload is considerably less in comparison to other branches sparing you enough time to prepare.

But if you are genuinely interested in pursuing a career in Energy Studies and subjects like renewable energy intrigue you, you can always go for off-campus opportunities which are in abundance.

As far as Control System Engineering is concerned, you can find more job opportunities in the field for energy engineers than for a control system engineer.

For either branch, the option of teaching as a job opportunity is always open and can be considered.
