Is biotechnology at IIT Madras a good course? Does it have better placements in India?

SG
Swati Gupta Posted On : July 14th, 2022
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IITM)

IIT Madras Biotechnology will be a good option if you are interested in Biology. If you want to go for higher studies or research, you will get good exposure at IIT Madras. It is a brach with huge research scope. Opportunities abroad are excellent for Biotechnology, ivy league universities offer great courses in Biotechnology and related fields.

Compared to other core branches at the institute, the placement opportunities are limited. Core placements are very few in number. But there are good opportunities in the non-tech sector. Biocon is one of the very few core biotech companies that recruit through the IIT Madras placement drive. The placement average for the branch is around 60%. The salary packages offered range from INR 8 - 21 LPA.

Which one is better IT in IIIT Allahabad or Biotech in IIT Roorkee?

SA
Subham Agarwal Posted On : April 14th, 2023
Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad

Both IIIT Allahabad and IIT Roorkee are prestigious Engineering institutes in their respective fields. The choice between them ultimately depends on your personal interests and career goals.

Information Technology (IT) at IIT Allahabad focuses on computer science and engineering covering diverse topics like software engineering, programming languages, databases, and artificial intelligence. Whereas, Biotechnology at IIT Roorkee is known for its research-oriented approach.

However, it’s worth mentioning that Biotechnology has little scope in India and is highly demanded in developed countries. One can witness a high monetary investment in this field outside India. I suggest you go through the curriculum of Biotechnology and then decide if you are interested in it or not. Your IIT tag will be an added bonus because of its global recognition and extensive alumni base.

IT industry is also extremely sought after these days because of the huge job opportunities it creates.

Ultimately, if you are inclined towards CS, then IT at IT Allahabad would be a good choice. But if it's biology and biotechnology that intrigues you, then Biotechnology at IIT Roorkee is the right choice for you.

What salary package can an average student expect in biotech at MNNIT Allahabad?

SR
Srijita Roy Posted On : July 23rd, 2021
Studied at MNNIT Allahabad (2019)

One of my friends studied there. According to him, there is hardly any scope of Biotech in India. The engineering curriculum is ancient in India. Hence, there are no decent colleges that produce skilled Biotech professionals. Even if a few are, India lacks Biotech infrastructure.

The branch either should be removed from the curriculum or should be developed as per global standards. Most Indian B.Tech Biotech degree holders in India prepare for IT interviews or Government exams like Banking and Railways.

The disappointing part is that the Government sector has few job openings which can barely employ all the B.Sc/ M.Sc/ B.Tech/ M.Tech Biotech degree holders.

In most Tier-3 colleges like NIT Bhopal, NIT Allahabad, MNIT Jaipur, and others, the students join the service-based companies as clerks with the package around INR 3-4 LPA.

These placement figures do not guarantee core Biotech companies or jobs. In the end, if you want to dive into core Biotech, it is better to fly off outside India.

Will it be good to specialize in a master’s in biotechnology from Nalanda Open University?

NC
Nandini Chatterjee Posted On : October 22nd, 2021
M.Tech. Biotechnology, SRM Institute of Science and Technology

My brother did B.Tech and M.Tech in Biotechnology. According to him, it’s not a good idea to pursue Biotechnology in distance mode. Distance mode education works best for subjects that have less practical work.

Biotechnology, on the other hand, requires extensive lab work and teacher-student interactions. Basically, Biotechnology is an interdisciplinary course. So, doing a regular degree or an engineering degree in Biotechnology will be far better.

Should I go for biotechnology in DTU or an ECE in MAIT IP?

AS
Ayush Sharma Posted On : January 12th, 2021
B.Tech CSE, DTU (2018)

Many students struggle with the college vs branch dilemma. You should choose the branch that you are more interested in. DTU is definitely a better college than MAIT. But you should make a choice depending on the course. In which field you will like to work for the rest of your life takes precedence over 4 years of college. The starting salary package of ECE at MAIT may not be lucrative. But you should definitely choose the option if you have an interest in ECE.

The table below can show a brief overview of the Universities.

Particulars

Biotechnology DTU

ECE MAIT

Average CTC

13 LPA

8 LPA

Course Fee (1st year)

1.66 lakhs

1.1o lakhs

Entrance Exam

JEE Mains/JEE Advance

IPU CET

Deciding Factors:

  • People will advise you to opt for a reputed college. Since better college offers jobs with better salary packages. This is true to some extent. But one of the main aspects of jobs is job satisfaction. If you do not like what you are going to do for around 300 hours a month, it will take a toll on you. It is better to pick a line of work you like over a high paying job with the line of work you do not enjoy. To do that you have to give priority to the specialization over brand name.
  • While starting out after finishing college, salary should not be your main concern. You should focus on honing your skills in your field. The first 3-5 years of your employment life should be about learning the most about your area of specialization. Since most of the institutes do not offer a curriculum that meets the needs of the industry.

You will have a lot of time to earn money, but you will not get the opportunity to learn and explore new things later in life. So, choose the branch you are passionate about.

What should we go for, mechanical engineering in NIT Rourkela or biotechnology in IIT Bhubaneswar?

PK
Payal Kapoor Posted On : August 13th, 2020
B.Tech Computer Science National Institute of Technology Rourkela (2024)

If you are not looking only for the hallmark of IIT, then you should go for Mechanical Engineering in NIT Rourkela. NIT Rourkela is one of the top 10 NITs and is ranked under the top 20 best engineering colleges in India. It has an excellent pool of highly qualified and experienced faculties and offers well-furnished laboratories equipped with updated systems. The placement scenario of this college is also quite impressive and is growing. Many big MNCs and top PSUs consistently visit the college for recruitment and internship opportunities. Apart from these, this college offers a good Hostel facility and a ragging free environment.

On the other hand, choose Biotechnology in IIT Bhubaneswar only if you are interested in the subject. Since Biotechnology has limited scope in India, you can't expect a cushy package like other branches. Biotechnology has good scope in research and development. Some IITs, IISC, JNU, DU offers Ph.D. courses in Biotechnology. But if you are concerned with placement, you should go for Mechanical Engineering in NIT Rourkela.

Should I take electrical in VNIT or biotechnology in IIT Bhubaneswar ?

SG
Soham Gupta Posted On : August 13th, 2020
Studies Mechanical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar (2023)

As your choice, of course, is different it’s difficult to choose one institute over the other. Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur is one of the oldest NITs with a good reputation. According to the National Institutional Ranking Framework 2020 VNIT ranks at 18 among all the engineering colleges of India. The placement highlights of 2018-19 at VNIT Nagpur show 68 students from Electrical Engineering got placed. The average salary package offered in the placement was around 7 LPA, while the highest package offered to students was 22 LPA. Top recruiters from this institute include Microsoft, MindTree, Raymond, Nokia, Sulzer, Siemens, and Symantec, etc.

Despite being a new IIT, Indian Institute Of Technology, Bhubaneswar is doing quite well both in academics and placement. According to NIRF Ranking, IIT Bhubaneswar is ranked at 26. The placement highlights from last year show 90% of students got a placement offer from this IIT. A total of 89 companies visited the campus for placement drive. The top recruiters were Amazon, Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, KPMG, L&T, Deloitte, Directi, Reliance Industries, IBM, Tesco, Samsung, Apple Inc, Adobe, Tata Steel, Tata Power, Trident Group, UnitedHealth Group, etc. ISRO, DRDO, IOCL, HPCL, ONGC are the PSUs that also visited the campus for recruiting the students. The average CTC Offered was around 11.44 LPA, whereas 39 LPA was the highest CTC.

Both the institutes VNIT and IIT Bhubaneswar have their merits, so the decision comes down to your choice of course. So, first, choose which course you want to pursue and then choose the institute offering a better program for that specific course.
