GATE 2020 XL Question Paper with Answer Key PDFs is now available. The exam was conducted by IIT Delhi on 2nd February 2020 in the Forenoon slot 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM. GATE 2020 XL Life Science question paper consists of 3 sections- General Aptitude, XL- P (Chemistry) and XL- Q to U (Biochemistry, Botany, Microbiology, Zoology, Food Technology). General Aptitude and Chemistry are mandatory sections, while the candidates can choose any two sections from XL- Q to U. GATE XL 2020 question paper was considered to be of moderate in terms of overall difficulty.

GATE 2020 XL Paper Analysis

• The exam was conducted in CBT (Computer Based Test) mode. 3 hours were given to solve 65 questions
• XL- P (Chemistry) consists of 15 questions for total of 25 marks.
• The paper also consists of General Aptitude section of total of 15 marks.
• The majority of the questions in GATE 2020 XL exam were of a moderate difficulty
• There was no negative marking for NATs. However each incorrect MCQ lead to deduction in marks.
  • For a 1-mark MCQ, the incorrect response led to deduction of 1/3 mark, and
  • For 2-marks MCQ, the incorrect answer led to deduction of 2/3 mark.
• Topic wise distribution of subjects and its analysis are given below:
  • Questions in XL - S Microbiology focused on Microbial Interactions and Molecular Approaches to Microbial Taxonomy.
  • In XL - T Zoology, questions were asked from evolution, Cell Biology, Ecology, Gene expression in Eukaryotes.
  • Chemistry based on questions from ionic and covalent bonding, s, p, and d Block Elements (XL-P is required for all XL applicants).
  • Questions in Sections XL-Q Biochemistry, XL-R Botany, and XL-U Food Technology were easy to moderate.
