Old buildings play an important role in conjuring up the old memories of the past. They also preserve our culture’s ethnicity and inspire a society to relieve its code of conduct. However, these structures from the past must not come in the way of social welfare and development. The land is a precious commodity and must be utilized for the greater good of the people of the society. Preserving heritage at the cost of modern development is distasteful.

The famous aphorism by the Spanish philosopher George Santayana “Those who can’t remember the past are condemned to repeat it” is timeless and holds water in today’s time as well. In a national context, old structures in our society are our heritage and remind us that the past was real. They remind us of the historical mistakes we made and help us decide the trajectory for the future. The forthcoming generations will take invaluable lessons from the past and take the pledge never to repeat them in the future, ensuring the establishment of a welfare state.

Whether they are the Ajanta Ellora Caves in Maharashtra, India or the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, or the Statue of Liberty in New York, USA, these old structures remind their respective societies of the glorious past and the culture they belong to. Every nook and corner of these antiquated structures has stories to tell. They are the keepers of thousands of unlocked mysteries. These old buildings also help one remain connected with the aesthetic tendencies of humanity that possess the power to create beauty out of stone. They teach the forthcoming generation how to appreciate the beauty and eliminate the vices of violence, hatred, and racism. From the point of view of gaining insight into the development of a community, their beliefs, and lifestyle, these cultural heritages from antiquity speak volumes as opposed to historical texts that only help one understand the past somewhat partly. These buildings from antiquity have also been food for thought for thousands of educationists and scholars who have written volumes about the past glories, victories, and face-offs.

In the context of a family, old buildings revive one’s long-cherished memories of the good old times like childhood and the time spent with other family members at various parts of the concrete structure. The conjuring up of these cherished memories is priceless and can never be assessed in terms of money. That is why the rich and the affluent in the past have left no stone unturned in preserving their heritage. Thousands of old structures have been preserved as they hold tinges of nostalgia for the owners.

However, the past must give way to the present and more importantly, the future. The foundation of a great society is laid when the greater good of the people of the society is ensured. If the antiquated structures are coming in the way of development and welfare of the masses, the former must either be gracefully replaced or removed to ensure the path to prosperity. There have been incidences in the past when historical structures as museums, libraries, or monuments had to be either shifted or gracefully removed as railway lines, airport runways or educational institutions such as universities had to be built. Many rulers of the past had never hesitated to choose to take the step towards development rather than back-stepping to regression. History has been a witness to societal disturbances and anarchy whenever the rulers have been unwise taking wishful decisions to preserve the archaic structures at the cost of the miseries of their subjects. The collective conscience of a society may object to the displacement of the old structures in the initial stages, later, however, they always welcome these steps to progression.

With the advancement in architecture and modern construction techniques, the newly-built structures have also proven to be long-lasting and more resilient to natural catastrophes like earthquakes and floods.

To sum up, we can say that the old buildings do have a significant role to play in keeping the past alive and preserved for the next generations. They enhance the cultural aura of their place of origin and act as a reminder to the citizenry about the glory of their past. However, they should never become a hindrance in paving the way for development. Whenever the question of the benefit and welfare of the masses at large arises, nothing can be allowed to pose as a roadblock. If an archaic structure comes in the way of the development of a facility that can provide comfort to the lives of the thousands, the building of the latter must take precedence over the preservation of the former.
