GRE Test Centers are available in over 160 countries with more than 1,000 centers. GRE dates are available throughout the year for the computer-delivered GRE general test. When to Take GRE Test?
Candidates, most of the time are confused regarding the decision on when to sit for GRE test. This will allow the candidates to avail a second attempt if they fail to score appropriate marks in the GRE test in their first attempt. GRE Test Center Protocols During Covid-19
Many GRE test locations closed down due to the pandemic. Now GRE test centers are again resuming their work but following certain protocols. ETS has suggested candidates take the GRE at-home exam where the test center exam has not resumed. All GRE exam centers are following strict guidelines as has been stated below:
- Candidates need to carry and wear their own face masks. They will not be allowed if they are not wearing masks. All GRE test centers permit candidates to wear weak masks even if it is not mandatory. Candidates can wear cloth or medical masks. Masks with vent or valve are not allowed in any GRE test center.
- Candidates will be required to remove their masks for a few seconds to get their photos taken. They will also need to remove the mask once they return from breaks.
- Test-takers may bring rubber gloves to the GRE test centers, though they are not required.
- All GRE test locations conduct regular cleaning of high-touch surfaces. They also provide disposal wipes for candidates to clean their testing area.
GRE Dates and Centers Rescheduling
GRE dates and test centers can be cancelled or rescheduled no later than four days before the test date or the GRE exam fee would be forfeited. In case of rescheduling, candidates can make the following changes to their GRE test centers and dates without contacting ETS:
- Reschedule their GRE center to another GRE test center
- Change GRE test locations due to health issues, even if the GRE center is open
- Change GRE schedule exam from test center to at-home exam
However, candidates are required to pay a fee of $50 for rescheduling their test or changing their GRE ETS dates and test locations. In addition to that, candidates are required to pay an additional amount of $50 in order to change their GMAT subject test.
GRE Test Additional Handling Charges

GRE at-home Exam
The GRE at-home exam is similar to the general test in terms of the GRE exam pattern. Candidates can register for GRE at-home by following the similar ETS GRE registration method. The GRE online test states for the at-home exam is similar to GRE general test dates. ETS is hosting a range of webinars to familiarize the candidates with the exam procedures. Points to be noted about the at-home exam:
- GRE at-home exam is available everywhere except Mainland China and Iran
- Similar to the GRE general test in terms of on-screen experience and format
- Monitored by a human proctor online through ProctorU®
- Available throughout the day, and 7 days a week
- Stable internet connection and webcam are mandatory requirements
- Whiteboards are allowed during the exam
- The scoring pattern is similar to the GRE general test
- Scores are reported within 10 - 15 days
- There will be an ID verification of the candidate just the way it happens in the test centers.

GRE Test Center - Disability Accommodation
Candidates having disabilities can avail of additional amenities. They need to contact their GRE exam centers for availing the accommodation. The accommodations may include:

GRE Test Center Guidelines
GRE test centers have certain strict guidelines that candidates need to follow. Below are the details of the guidelines:
- The first and last names should match excluding the accents
- If the examiner questions your ID, you may need to provide a supplemental ID. If that doesn’t suffice, candidates may not be allowed to take the test
- Bring two copies of the acceptable ID proofs
- GRE fees will not be refunded in case the candidates are not allowed to take the test
- ID verification may include:
- Biometric voice and photo identification
- Fingerprinting/thumbprinting
- Video Recording
- Signature Comparison
When is the Ideal Time to Take GRE?
GRE can be taken five times on a rolling basis with a gap of 21 days. Follow the steps to decide the perfect timing to take the GRE exam:
