GRE quant syllabus includes assessment of basic mathematical skills, understanding of elementary mathematics concepts and ability to reason quantitatively and solve problems with quantitative methods. GRE quant syllabus is purely based on mathematical problems. It has two subsections and each subsection contains 20 questions on arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis. The duration of each subsection is 35 minutes. The total number of questions in the entire quantitative reasoning is 40, and the time duration given will be 70 minutes. The score range of GRE quant is 130-170. GRE score range of quant being 130 - 170, 160 is quite a difficult score to attain and every candidate strives hard to do so.
GRE Quantitative Syllabus
The GRE quant syllabus has four sections and numerous sub-areas.
GRE arithmetic covers a lot of areas and it includes much more than just addition and subtraction. GRE arithmetic deals with the general properties of numbers and their uses.
GRE algebra includes a vast area and is almost linked with all the other sections.
GRE algebra problems mostly contain one or more variables.
Here are 4 examples of algebraic expressions:
Example A: 2x
Example B: y - ¼
Example C: w^3 z + 5z^2 - z^2 +6
Example D: 8/( n+ p)
The official GRE quantitative reasoning practice questions second edition volume 1 is an authentic GRE quant book for such tough questions. Candidates can get tough questions there and get explanations as well.
Apart from the other 3 sections in quantitative reasoning, GRE geometry problems come in various forms. GRE Geometry usually consists of 15% of the total questions. The maximum number of geometry questions involves circles and polygons.
GRE data analysis a group of questions together and questions revolve around a table or graph. Official ETS GRE quantitative reasoning practice questions contain a few examples of such questions. Here, the test taker can be questioned to put the appropriate angles to the statistical pie charts.
These 4 sub-major areas include numerous sub-areas. These sub-areas include:
GRE Arithmetic | GRE Algebra | GRE Geometry | GRE Data Analysis |
---|---|---|---|
Properties | Exponents | Parallel and perpendicular lines | Descriptive statistics such as- mean, median, mode, range, standard deviation, interquartile range, quartiles, and percentiles |
Integers | Factoring | Circles | Interpretation of data in tables and graphs |
Divisibility | Simplifying algebraic expressions | Triangles — including isosceles, equilateral and 30°-60°-90° triangles | Elementary probability |
Factorization | Relations | Quadrilaterals and other polygons | Counting methods, such as combinations, permutations |
Prime numbers | Function | Congruent and similar figures | Venn diagrams |
Remainders | Functions | Three-dimensional figures, area, perimeter, and volume | - |
Odd and even integers | Intercepts and slopes of lines | Pythagorean theorem | - |
Sequences of numbers | Equations and inequalities | Angle measurement in degrees | - |
Decimal representation | Simultaneous equations and inequalities | - | - |
Number line | Equations to solve word problems | - | - |
Absolute value | Coordinate geometry | - | - |

Arithmetic operations | Linear and quadratic equations and inequalities | - | - |
Exponents and roots | - | - | - |
Estimation | - | - | - |
Percent | - | - | - |
GRE Word Problems
The GRE word problems are linked and sometimes overlap with the data interpretation section. The problems involve mixtures, work rates, interest, and more. But one thing to be noted, word problems have their own way of solving the sum and have a different perspective of dealing with quant. For instance, there are statistics word problems, arithmetic word problems, geometry word problems, and so on. In fact, word problems and algebra problems are the most commonly found sums in the ETS GRE reasoning practice question pdf.
GRE Quantitative Questions Pattern
GRE quant question is mainly of four kinds:
- Quantitative comparison
Sample question:
Quantity A | Quantity B |
---|---|
The least prime number greater than 24 | The greatest prime number less than 28 |
- Quantity A is greater.
- Quantity B is greater.
- The two quantities are equal.
- The relationship cannot be determined from the information given.
- One answer choice question
Sample question:
If 5x+32=4-2x, What is the value of x ?
- -4
- -3
- 4
- 7
- 12
- One or more answer choice MCQ
Sample question
Which two of the following numbers have a product that is between –1 and 0?
Indicate both of the numbers.
- –20
- –10
- 2 –4
- 3 –2
- Numeric entry question
Sample question:
A merchant made a profit of $5 on the sale of a sweater that cost the merchant $15. What is the profit expressed as a percent of the merchant's cost?
Give your answer to the nearest whole percent.
%
Each section comes in an independent set of questions. These sets of questions are known as Data Interpretation Set, which is based on the information given in graphs, tables, or other display methods.
Question type | Instruction | Types of answer options |
---|---|---|
Quantitative comparison questions | Compare two quantities and then figure out which statement answers the comparison | Quantity A is greater. Quantity B is greater. The two quantities are equal. The relationship cannot be determined from the information given. |
Multiple Choice Questions – Select One Answer Choice | Choose one correct answer from the given options | Five options to choose from. |
Multiple Choice Questions – Select One or More Answer Choices | Select more than one correct answers from the given answer options | Among 5 answer options, candidates need to choose one or all - no marks for partially correct answers |
Numeric entry | Calculate and write the answer | No answer choices will be provided |
