Model Answer

There can be no present without the past. Everything in the world right now is a result of centuries-old natural processes, years of study, research, development on various aspects of human life. Materialistic things are continually evolving. Like technology is getting faster and smarter since human nature remains the same, so do his desires and expectations. Therefore, I do not support the claim that knowing about the past cannot help people to make important decisions today. We cannot make informed decisions without learning about the past, recent or ancient.

The primary reason for my stand is that any modern-day discovery or invention is the culmination of decades of study and research. Every occurrence of the past has allowed us to make the greatest achievements. The scientific advancements of today would not have been possible if not for the work done for centuries by a crazy number of scientists. Take for example the Covid-19 mRNA vaccine, this vaccine was in development for over two decades. One researcher discovered nanoparticles, another discovered mRNA, and one scientist spent decades modifying the nanoparticle to ignite an immune response by the human body. Today’s diagnostic tools use a technique called PCR, which was developed by Karry Mullis in 1983. This procedure has been modified since then to detect the presence of infectious microbes in the human body. Without the work done by these and countless other brilliant scientists, we would not have the vaccine and testing kits. These were developed in record time and saved the global population from collapsing under the pandemic.

History has been a part of the curriculum in schools and universities. Since schools have been created because history contains lessons that we can learn from and improve upon. The actions of the past, whether good or bad, continue to influence our lives and hence it is important to know them to improve our knowledge and understanding. Good decisions can be mirrored and bad ones can be worked upon. These can affect circumstances on a personal level as well as a global situation. For example, currently, 75% of all Japanese constructions are earthquake resistant, the 2004 earthquake. It was the basis of this decision and by being prepared, Japan suffered less in comparison to the earthquake in 2011. The past allowed the Japanese to make sustainable development.

The present will always be more complex than the past, however, the extent of the complexity is relative to the topical situation. While we cannot look for exact solutions in the past because our problems are correlated with the progression of our lifestyle. In the past can form the basis of our understanding upon which improvements can be made. When any two nations were in disagreement in the past, they waged a war against each other and suffered from economic crises, poverty and rehabilitation issues. But now when countries want to fight, they have learnt from the past that war is self-destructive, instead sanctions are imposed or imports-exports are affected.

Without the discovery of the wheel, we would not have the modes of transport we have today. Without the creation of the world wide web, we wouldn’t have websites. The human race has advanced to such great heights but only because of the creativity and hard work of those that came before us. Knowing their thought process behind their deeds will allow us to expand our minds according to the issues we are facing. Therefore, I am confident that knowing about the past will help us in making crucial decisions.
