The topic for the GRE Analyse and Issue essay is determined by the structure of the essay. The following structure needs to be followed by the candidates to properly organise the essay:

Body Paragraph 2: Candidates need to give real life examples in this paragraph as well. Candidates need to ensure that their second reason is supported with examples which have real life value and are not vague.
Final Paragraph: Here a student has to write why he chose those examples and how it is relevant to support his own stand. The final paragraph should state the topic and provide the third reason for the opinion. Accordingly, the reasons for the final paragraph need to prove that the given issue for the essay topic is wrong.

Model Answer

Indeed, due to intense competition all over the world, people will take any step that will help them reach the pinnacle of success. The majority of people today do not consider the path that will lead them to success. Some people may even choose an ill-considered or unethical path to the top of their field. People refer to them as "heroes" in their respective fields once they achieve their goals. But this could lead to doomsday for their followers when they discover what their true heroes are made of. Accordingly, while I agree with the given statement, it would be possible to provide significant reasons and instances that can justify my support for the opinion. This implies that some people consider their favourite personalities as heroes only for what they have achieved and not for what they might have overcome.

Lance Armstrong, the cycling legend, is a recent example that supports the aforementioned viewpoint. When the possibility that Armstrong had taken drugs became a reality, it broke millions of hearts. He was the man who inspired millions of cancer patients and survivors around the world. Given the fact that he fought cancer valiantly throughout his life, it was entirely appropriate to label him a "hero". However, this recently revealed fact may jeopardise his heroic reputation. Young people interested in cycling will continue to regard him as a role model based solely on his achievements in the sport. However, one cannot be blamed if he or she no longer regards him as an idol. Considerably, his heroic act to support cancer survivors might be an inspiration for a lot of people. However, the media's conjecture about its drug consumption can be considered impacting negatively. Based on that people need to believe and see their heroes rather than any negative activity they might have been involved in.

However, not all heroes belong to the same category. Few "heroes" have achieved success solely through hard work and fairness. Even the most meticulous media scrutiny would not be able to detract from their heroic status. Throughout his career, greats such as Sachin Tendulkar have been scrutinised. No one, however, has ever accused him of achieving heroic status through dubious means. Similarly, people like Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, Kalpana Chawla, and others are regarded as pure and honest heroes because they have always been open and honest. The media coverage for these great people in the world who have achieved immense success in their lives is an inspiration as well. Media definitely plays its role in ensuring the same.

Moreover, media coverage towards certain social aspects in terms of political and social developments can be considered focusing mainly on the positive issues. There are certain problems faced by countries in political terms and media coverage rarely considers the issues of corruption compared to the positive news. Accordingly, it may be identified that the projection of the politicians to be completely on the positive aspects can be considered immensely detrimental. This is because it tries to focus on the “heroic” attitudes of the people rather than on negative aspects which can be called out even through the media.

When a person is nominated as a hero, society has high expectations. Heroes have a huge responsibility to not only meet society's expectations but also to inspire the country's youth in the right direction. These wonderful qualities are not given to everyone. As a result, no Harry nor Tom can or should be considered heroes. At the end of the day, it is up to society to absorb an individual's positive actions or to mock him by highlighting his negative actions.
