GRE essay is to check the ability of the candidate to write on a given topic. It examines the ability to understand the candidate. On a particular topic, the candidate has to write a well-structured answer. The answer should reflect his own thoughts and opinions about the topic. It can be said as a debatable essay writing task. GRE issue essay requires to include the candidate's proper stand about the given issue. For example, one has to state clearly if he is agreeing with the topic or totally obtaining an opposite position. To state clearly the position of the candidate on the basis of the topic is very important.

A student can follow this structure in his GRE Analyse an Issue Essay containing five paragraphs can be helpful. Those paras are as follows:

Introduction: One should state clearly the first thoughts on the given topic. The relevance of the topic in real life and its impact can be discussed here in both positive and negative aspects. For the given topic, candidates need to introduce the topic by stating the given view. Accordingly, candidates should mention the opinion that it is going to take for the given issue topic and state the reasons for the same in brief. Candidates need to state the examples that they would explain in relevance to the topic.
Body paragraph 1: In this Paragraph, the candidate should state his or her position on the topic. And a small but significant reason for staying in that position. The reason should be authentic enough as it will carry forward his position throughout the essay. It should also include relevant examples to support the stand.
Body Paragraph 2: the second reason for the candidate’s opinion needs to be included followed by an effective example. Stating real-life experiences as examples can be helpful. What happened or could have happened according to real-life experience should be stated here.
Final Paragraph: The Final paragraph should include restating the topic of the issue essay for the GRE AWA task. This needs to be followed by providing the candidates’ opinion on the topic followed by the third reason for its opinion. It should include yet another example of the opinion the candidate chose to give validating the opinion further.
Conclusion: Here the candidate has to state why his or her argument is correct, and the given topic is wrong. It needs to restate the given reasons which will support the position as totally correct.

A proper structure can give an answer an extra essence. So using these five points properly will be very helpful to construct the GRE issues. Accordingly, the candidate needs to consider the following strategies to write the essay as follows:

  • Candidates need to choose a side and stick to it throughout the essay unlike the GRE Analyse an Argument where the given statement needs to be critiqued
  • Ensuring relevance and specificity to the real world while stating reasons and examples
  • Making strong declarative statements with the use of active language and cause and effect statements is important
  • Identifying your opposite opinion and then refuting it with two-three sentences is important to conclude the essay with a strong point.

Topic: Claim: Group assignments that students must work together to complete should replace a substantial amount of traditional lecture-based instruction in college and university courses.

Reason: It is vital for students to gain experience collaborating with peers to study a topic and to achieve a common goal.

Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim and the reason on which that claim is based.

Model Answer:

The topic claims that group studies or group assignment is more beneficial and is effective for the students than the regular or traditional lecture-based instructions. However, the fact that lecture-based instruction for any student is best rather than finding information by you. Any group study or assignment can’t be guaranteed to be done without any confusion or any false information. Whereas, the lecturers who are experts in their teaching subjects will give you the correct information. Thus, I would like to contend against the claim made here.

Firstly, students doing any assignments on their own with the help of the internet can be successful but there would be a lot of risk in this process. Learning with your friends and your comfort zone where you can ask any silly question without a hint of hesitation is so good. The Internet can sometimes misguide research, one with proper information and knowledge can get through this confusion. This confusion among the students can affect the group assignment. To avoid this confusion students need proper guidance about the respective subject and the topic they are assigned for.

Secondly, the traditional lecture-based instruction by any teacher or professor is affordable for any student anytime. This thing has its advantages. Here the tradition of learning with your teacher can make you learn the proper information without any misguidance or wrong information. Lecturers are the one who at one glance can pick up the bright student and the one who is struggling to get through the school. The key is “Experience”. The amount of experience they have through all the years of teaching helps them to be so good that they can solve your problems or confusions.

Thirdly, the group discussion or study or any assignments can make students study and understand the topic on their own. This is also a good thing but if students are not able to find any information or solution the only option they are left with is to get help from the lecturer. It may sometimes feel very bad that maybe this is very easy and should be solved on your own but not always every problem would be solved on your own. You will always need someone expert in the respective criteria to get through every problem. And it might be easier to talk about the problem with your peers than with the lecturer but not every time everything is easy.

Let us understand this with an example, you are assigned the question comment on the theme of Death and Funeral rituals in the short story “The Green Leaves”. Now if you search the internet and try to find the answer, it may provide you with many funeral rituals. Internet may provide information about “Christian funeral rituals” “Hindu funeral rituals” or “Muslim funeral rituals”. But if you take this doubt to your teacher, they will answer you with the correct information. As you can see, the internet only provided the funeral ritual and hasn’t spoken or shown anything about death that might affect your answer and the marks. The Internet may give you the wrong information whereas. But your teacher may provide you with the correct answers to the correct theme of death and funeral rituals in the short story.

In conclusion, I would like to state that doing your assignments on your own lets you explore and know things on your own but it’s not always safe. It may sometimes provide you with false information or sometimes lacks some information or can misguide you as well. There is also a chance that you might find comfort talking with your peers about your problems. At the same time you might find it uncomfortable and hesitate to talk about your problems to teachers but it’s worth taking the problem to the teachers. Group learning is good, studying and researching stuff by you helps to get yourself really into the depth of the topic.
