Model Answer

It is very important for every child to get an education, as education can change their life. It will prepare the child for the harmonious transformation from a student into a responsible citizen. Thus, in order to make a better life for the children, education is mandatory for everyone. Therefore, the government should make education free for everyone.

There are also some negative results if the education in colleges and universities is made free. There are some students, after completing their Higher Secondary, who opt for a professional course or vocational course. These students are aware of their aptitudes and have grown up. Some of them are interested in business, others opt for general courses. If education is made free in colleges and universities, then more students will be interested in taking up general courses. This can further result in unemployment, as there will be fewer job opportunities for the huge number of qualified students. The government can tackle this strong competition by adopting different methods of admitting the student. One of the methods is Entrance- Exams, where the students will be allowed to enter on the basis of their merit. The shortage in the job opportunity will lead the educated and highly qualified to settle down in low-level jobs, where they do not get their deserved honour for their capability and hard work. Thus the people will get demoralised and would get diverted from the idea of getting higher education. This would further put the image of free university education down in the eyes of new aspirants.

The idea of making education free of cost in colleges and universities would also leave the government under a heavy burden. It would create a shortage of funding for the college or university. The government cannot afford to solely fund the college or university. It would be very difficult in the current economic situation. A government does many social services with its revenue. For instance, if they have to fully fund a college or a university, it will not be able to do the other services. This is because the maximum proportion of the revenue will be spent on the colleges and universities. Without proper revenue, the colleges and universities will not be able to provide the facilities of good libraries, laboratories, and sports equipment. Moreover, the colleges and universities will not be able to hire qualified professors. No educated teachers or professors will stay in the educational institutions that will not be able to pay their appropriate salaries. Thus, the low-paying colleges and universities will not have many interested candidates. The low salaries staff will also not deliver the lectures full-heartedly, this would further put the government on the question of qualitative education. Thus it would further create a bad impression of the government, and along with that, it would hamper the future generation. There will be problems regarding the facilities provided to the students themselves.

There are again some other factors for providing free higher education. Only providing higher education will not be enough for an economy. The economy must also be able to generate ample job opportunities, where qualified candidates can find a job opportunity. For instance, the government of a developing country must set up more and more industries, so that it can create ample job opportunities. With effective salaries, the teachers would find motivation to teach and provide quality based knowledge and education. And after that, they can plan for free education, which is expected to create an educated generation, provided they take the free education seriously. This generation can get employment opportunities, from the industries or firms that have been newly invested in. However, with making education completely free, maintaining the monetary requirements of the staff would become difficult. Therefore, there will be a wide difference between the quality of the students in a full government aided college and that of the private colleges. Private college students would have better education and due to lack of proper quality education, government college students would lack efficiency.

In short, making higher education free of cost will be not beneficial neither for the public nor for the government. Thus the government must think of some other policy, which can make education cheaper if not free for common people. It can put a check on the private institution that basically burdens the students with a high semester or yearly fees.
