The standard GRE Issue Essay is of five paragraphs. Candidates can choose between 4-6 paragraphs as per their writing structure. A five paragraph structure is provided below:

Introduction: The introduction will state the topic with the side notion the candidate will be presenting. In this introductory paragraph, the candidate has to mention the topic and points that they will be further making to prove their point in GRE AWA.
Body Paragraph 1: In this paragraph, according to the topic the candidate has to present forth the strongest point. This point should be further supported with examples that are relatable in real life to the reader.
Body Paragraph 2: In paragraph 2, the candidate will continue presenting their reason to support their side. Like in paragraph 1, there should be an example relating to that reason.
Final Paragraph: In this paragraph, the candidate should bring up another reason with an example. This will be the third reason that candidate will be given. While following the structure the candidate should also take into consideration the following points. These points will help in constructing a better essay on the topic "The general welfare of a nation's people is a better indication of that nation's greatness than are the achievements of its rulers, artists, or scientists”.

  • Choose your side: In the introductory paragraph, the candidate will reveal whether they are in favor of the statement or against it. So, throughout the essay, the candidate has to stick to the preferred side. Also, do not make ambiguous statements, i.e., supporting the both the sides and creating confusion.
  • Give relevant reasons and examples: All the reasons and examples that the candidate will be covered should be relevant to real-life circumstances. It is better to throw away imaginative power and work around real-life patterns. Also, do not get distracted away from the topic while writing an essay.
  • Giving strong statements: All the ideas and suggestions should be strong enough to support your idea. Try to present arguments in active voice and avoid using passive voice. The arguments should be presented in a cause-effect relationship. The flow of the essay should not be broken and it must move on with continuity.
  • Make strong opposing points: In the essay, it is required to refute the other side. If you are in favor of the topic then make strong statements refuting the other side, i.e., against the topic.

Topic: The general welfare of a nation's people is a better indication of that nation's greatness than are the achievements of its rulers, artists, or scientists.

Write an essay in which the candidate has to put their opinion either in agreement or disagreement with the topic. Further, extend the opinions with proper reasons and examples. You have to strongly support and disagree with the opposition in your answer.

Model Answer:

I disagree with the notion of "The general welfare of a nation's people is a better indication of that nation's greatness than are the achievements of its rulers, artists, or scientists." In my opinion, the presentation of a nation and its ruler's greatness is equally important. As a citizen of a country, we crave for the general welfare of our society but on the same hand, we forget the rulers. Being human beings we love to wear new and different clothes, so the nation also wants certain beautiful arts and science to be inscribed occasionally.

The nation's beauty become a tool for attracting of international tourists. If we continue to build certain historical, artistic, and scientific achievements then tourists will get attracted leading to an increase in the country's GDP. Taking an example of the Taj Mahal which is located in India, it attracts thousands of tourists every year. Taj Mahal does not only leave an artistic impression on the visitors. However, there are other multiple details regarding the historical events and the creator of the Taj Mahal. These great establishments lay down the reason to give recognition to the Shahjahan. Since tourists get attracted because of such beautiful development in the country this leads to growth in the country's recognition. Also, their visit to our country will add to the profits for everyone from local vendors to the government.

Further, to support my point I would like to state that displaying the greatness of artists, and rulers will make history alive in the hearts of people. This will further arouse the feeling of nationalism whenever people come across such things. Everyone must have visited Parliament House and encountered the achievements of all the rulers and politicians. These rulers and politicians have made a great contribution to making our country better. It must have inspired and given an insight into their struggle. The story of rulers and statues representing their contributions should be added to the environment. The installation of the statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in Ahmedabad gives the generation information about his identity. Further, it adds to the curiosity of the young minds about his life and struggles which they can clarify by reading the information about him. In such a way, the impression of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel will always remain in the mind of people.

The upcoming generation will forget and will have a vague idea about what the rulers have gone through. The art and scientific development taking place at a particular time should be recognized to encourage people further to work hard and get recognized. For example, when ISRO launches its satellite it marks the scientific development making our country to be the first to launch an interplanetary Mars orbiter. It is important to make the people aware of these achievements of the country to give them a detailed insight into the achievements of scientists. The failures and achievements both were showcased to the coming generations. Thus, creating a permanent impression on the minds of great people. However, the claim that "The general welfare of a nation's people is a better indication of that nation's greatness than are the achievements of its rulers, artists, or scientists." is quite limiting and I disagree with this concept.

In the end, I would like to conclude that spending money and time only on general welfare is of no good. We need to spend money on the display of national achievement too. To build a developed nation it is suggested to spend an equal amount on the development of the nation's greatness. Moreover, it is necessary to make people aware of the efforts of rulers, artists, and scientists.
