Topic

The following is a recommendation from the personnel director to the president of Acme Publishing Company.

"Many other companies have recently stated that having their employees take the Easy Read Speed-Reading Course has greatly improved productivity. One graduate of the course was able to read a 500-page report in only two hours; another graduate rose from an assistant manager to vice president of the company in under a year. Obviously, the faster you can read, the more information you can absorb in a single workday. Moreover, Easy Read would cost Acme only $500 per employee - a small price to pay when you consider the benefits. Included in this fee is a three-week seminar in Spruce City and a lifelong subscription to the Easy Read newsletter. Clearly, Acme would benefit greatly by requiring all of our employees to take the Easy Read course."

Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument.

Answer:

The author claims here how the Acme Publishing Company should constrain its employees to take the Read Speed-Reading Course owing to the fact that other company houses could increase their productivity based on this issue. Moreover, he explains some facts like the ability of swift reading can help raise one employee from assistant manager to vice president. Additionally, he believes that indulging in this course will cost a little for the company. According to the author’s claim and the reasons, it can be understood that the reasons are too fragile to be taken or they need to be explained furthermore.

Firstly, the author states that fast reading will increase productivity of the company; therefore, an individual must read five hundred pages within two hours. Here, a question can arise in your mind. What is the link between quick reading and improving productivity? Is it relevant when you hear the example of a person who could read 500 pages in two hours? In this case, the connection between these two items is unclear and it needs to be elaborated more than what the author states.

Also check:

Secondly, the author mentions another example of one employee who has been promoted from an assistant manager to a vice president position. The author offers this promotion because of taking a Speed-Reading Course by the person. However, he never considers other factors that may lead to this improvement. That may include the great ability of management, having good talent and ideas for being vice president, or maybe having more experience than other persons and etc are all such factors of why this employee was promoted to vice president. Hence, it is not strong enough to showcase the ability of speed-reading as the only reason.

Finally, he highlights that the cost for this project is as low as just 500$ for one person. The author never discusses the number of Acme employees. It may be an enormous cost if the number of applicants for the course is high. Moreover, he never speaks about the Acme budget which is allotted to this project. In addition, he must discuss the costs for the three-week conference in detail, which might need a huge investigation.

In conclusion, this claim that taking speed-reading courses can improve productivity of employees is not expanded and explained well by the author. There are a lot of assumptions, and questions that must be taken into account. Therefore, this statement is considered to be a weak claim.
