Student of Computer Science Engineering brings glory to SSIPMT

Date: June 15, 2021

The achievement of Vivek Agrawal, student of Computer Science and Engineering, 4th Semester has brought glory and pride for Shri Shankaracharya Institute of Professional Management and Technology Raipur. Vivek has been selected for the prestigious Google Summer of Code, a Mentorship Programme by Google on a stipend of $1500 USD.

Vivek’s journey towards this great accomplishment started when one of his friends studying at NIT, Raipur told him about Google Summer of Code. He found the concept interesting and decided to explore it. He read that Google Summer of Code (abbreviated as GSoC) is a program conducted by Google every year in which college students from all over the world submit their project proposals to participate in the open source organizations. Open source organizations are not-for-profit organizations working towards a good goal. Examples of open source organizations include The Linux Foundation, Apache Software Foundation, Mozilla and many others.

The participating students look at the problem statements of the organization (also called idea list) and submit a written document describing the solution of that problem called project proposal. The results of which are announced after a month. Students whose project proposals are accepted spend a few weeks integrating with their organizations prior to the start of coding. Accepted students then have 10 weeks to code, meeting the deadlines agreed upon with the organization mentors.

All this started when Vivek was in the first semester. He realized that GSoC was one of the best ways to get real-world exposure to production-quality software development. This realization started his journey. In the first semester, he enrolled in Harvard University's free online programming course called CS50 and found that it was one of the best programming courses on the Internet. After rigorous preparations of five to six months, he completed the course. This course made him so confident in programming that from that day onwards, he had not to look up for any other programming course. He realized, to learn anything new, he just needed to read the documentation and he would be good to go.

When he was in his second semester, he saw a tweet from freeCodeCamp.org's founder Quincy Larson. They were looking for contributors for their upcoming curriculum development. He thought that it would be the best way to start his open source journey. So, he started contributing pull requests to freeCodeCamp.org.  Then came April of 2020, GSoC applications were open but he was still relatively less experienced in software development. Nevertheless, he decided to apply. He found a good problem statement, made a detailed proposal but to his dismay he couldn’t get through. This initial failure could not deter Vivek from moving ahead. He introspected upon his failure and realized that there were things that I didn’t do right.

He decided to start afresh and try again next year. He devoted one full year in building his programming skills and continued contributing to open source organizations. In March 2021, when almost the entire country was under lockdown, everything was running remotely, he tried his hands the second time. Again, he shortlisted the organizations that matched his skill sets, analyzed the problem statement, created a detailed proposal and submitted it to the organization. This year he started preparing for the proposal early and even discussed his proposal extensively with his mentor to get feedback and overcome the shortcomings, if any. The results came on May 17, 2021 and he was declared as a selected student developer for the organization Learning Equality.

Vivek’s job this summer is to refactor their asynchronous task backend system API to overhaul the developer experience. The program will run from June 7, 2021 till August 31, 2021. He hopes that these two months will bring in the most joyful learning experience of his life.

SSIPMT student gets selected for Internship in ADOBE

SSIPMT

Date: June 09, 2021

Suraksha Mandhan, currently pursuing her Bachelors in Computer Science and Engineering from Shri Shankaracharya Institute of Professional Management Technology, Raipur (SSIPMT) has been selected for Internship by ADOBE. It is a 10-12 week internship with a stipend of Rs. 100,00 per month.  She will be graduating in the Summer of 2022.

Suraksha’s journey to her milestone achievement started in the month of March 2019 when the country wide lockdown was announced. Moving away from the normal routine of watching web series and whiling away the time, Suraksha thought of doing something productive.

It was in the beginning of April that she decided that she should start her preparations because she was aware of the fact that to crack an internship in any big MNC, she needed to be very thorough in Data structures and Algorithms. So, she started by making a timetable as to how she would learn things. She initiated with the theory part and then slowly progressed to solving problems level wise, beginning with simple ones and moving to complex. Contrary to her expectation, this wasn’t an easy task. She took longer than usual to solve problems of different levels. There were days when she was able to solve 2-3 problems in a row sitting for 2-3 hours which was quite good but then there were also days when she was not able to solve even a single problem, making her feel disappointed. But she was determined to take every single problem, no matter how much time and effort she had to invest.

Consequently, her patience and diligence made her solve more than 400 problems of good quality in a span of just 3 - 4 months. A time came when started enjoying solving such problems consistently for she knew this practice will help her in the long run during face-to-face interviews as well as in the coding rounds of the companies.

Having equipped herself well with the subject knowledge that was required to grab Internship in Big Companies, she started applying in various companies online. And finally during the momentous period of May-June of 2021, Suraksha had internship offers from two Top 50 companies-Morgan Stanley and Adobe. She chose ADOBE.Surkasha has proved the maxim “All depends on how determined we are to be successful.”  SSIPMT Raipur is overjoyed with Suraksha’s efforts and accomplishments and wishes her lots of luck

SSIPMT Student gets selected for Google Summer Code of 2021

SSIPMT Raipur

Date: June 01, 2021

Apurv Gupta, student of B.E. 3rd year Computer Science and Engineering, has made an achievement worthy of pride. His proposal for The Apache Software Foundation has been selected for Google Summer of Code 2021  as Mentorship Program by Google on a Stipend of $1500 USD amounting to 1,10,000 INR.  It is a 10-week programme and he will be contributing to Apache CloudStack, popular open source cloud computing software for creating, managing, and deploying Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) clouds.

Now the question is - How did Apurv  get started with open source or what is open source or even what is software development exactly? This is where open source comes in. It gives you the opportunity to explore how software works in the real world when there are so many developers around the world working on a project to create a product. He started exploring open source in his sophomore year of college. At that time he only had basic idea of web development (html, css, js) since he had that topic in his course.

Due to the pandemic, when everyone was locked in their houses, Apurv made a wise use of his time and started doing simple projects with the tech stack he was familiar with. One of the great resources to learn web development is to follow a tutorial video and code along with it. He did a similar thing and created a few projects. Then he thought as he has some decent projects to show on his resume, he started applying for work from home internships. Initially, things didn't work well. Rejections are everywhere, especially when you're a newbie entering a new field.

For almost a month, he gave interviews almost every day and got emails with rejections, but he didn't give up and made notes on how to improve next time. And finally he got the internship for a full stack developer intern role wherein the learning, knowledge, exposure and also the stipend was worth the efforts and thus he contributed to a great project during the internship. Meanwhile, the college organised trainings for various technologies like Reactjs and the sessions hosted by HOD Sir helped Apurv to learn more about these programmes and OpenSource.

From then on, he had in his mind that he must contribute to OpenSource after the internship. When the internship was over, he started exploring some OpenSource projects to contribute to. He also looked for an organisation for Google Summer of Code. He found two such organisations that matched with his tech stack, one was the Apache Software Foundation and the other was RocketChat.

Since he had some experience with these things, there was no problem setting up the codebase in his local environment. And he started actively contributing to both organisations. For RocketChat, he was one of the top 10 contributors, but for the GSoC'21 proposal, he gave preference to Apache because he was more interested in DevOps. For Google Summer of Code, he had to submit a proposal giving details about the project and its implementation.

Apurv’s determined efforts and his desire to do something helped him achieve this outstanding opportunity. SSIPMT wishes you All the Very Best.
