The University of Alberta offers a Master of Music program for a duration of 2 years (4 terms).
This course is on-campus and thesis-based offered on a full-time basis.
The program consists of two options: thesis, or project option for a minimum of 24 units.
The Department of Music has developed this degree in three distinct fields:
- Choral Conducting
- Composition
- Performance
Through this program, students will focus on the practical study of music performance, conducting or composition, and programs that allow students to delve into the concentration of their choice.
The faculty and student ratio for this program is 1:14.
The university consists of 50 tenure-track faculty members, 42 faculty lecturers, and 97 sessional lecturers.
The faculty have won multiple teaching and research awards at the local, provincial and national level, including 3M Teaching Award, Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, etc.
Students must also demonstrate proficiency in an approved language other than English.
The Department also includes opportunities for composers to interface with graduate and faculty scholars in the areas of musicology, theory, and ethnomusicology.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:

Students must have a four-year undergraduate degree or its academic equivalent, from an academic institution recognized by the University of Alberta.
The cumulative weighted average GPA of 3.0/4.0 [B Grade].
Proof of English proficiency may be required for international applicants, whose first language is not English.

Indian Student Eligibility:

Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

Completed a 4-year UG degree with first class in a relevant field from a recognized institution
Completed a master's degree with first-class in a relevant field from a recognized institution.
Students will need to submit school results for Class XI showing a competitive average and course registration for Class XII, or Class XII mid-year results.
Students in CBSE or CISCE schools need to present a 75%+ score on their final Class XII exams.

Submission of GRE scores is optional for this program, however, if students have taken the GRE exam then it is recommended to submit the GRE scores for a better chance of admission.

Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test.
