Students take courses for Mathematics Education program that are focused on how to teach mathematical concepts and teacher leadership in a diverse society as well as core courses including calculus, logic and proof, statistical methods, discrete structures and linear algebra. They complete internships and student teaching with mentorship from dedicated, experienced teachers and guidance from Western Carolina University faculty. A Mathematics Tutoring Center offers drop-in assistance, access to a library of textbooks and space for study sessions. Students also are encouraged to conduct research and have presented their work at conferences of the Mathematical Association of America and the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics. In addition, students make personal and professional connections in WCU?s Math Club and a student group affiliated with a state mathematics teachers organization.

Employment prospects are excellent for mathematics students who concurrently complete a degree in education and become licensed to teach mathematics in North Carolina. The state has a shortage of secondary school mathematics teachers. Graduates also may pursue advanced degrees or be competitive for any job that requires mathematics or analytical thinking skills.
