SWE Scholarships

Society of Women Engineers(SWE) provides financial assistance to women pursuing a course in engineering, technology or any filed related to computers in any US universities.

  • Female students studying at community colleges, UG and PG courses are eligible for the scholarship.
  • SWE invites for two separate application system for freshmen and sophomores.
  • The application deadline for sophomores is February 1, 2023.
  • For the freshmen, the application form is open from February 1, 2023 and closes on March 20, 2023. Reference letters  are due by March 27, 2023. 
  • The deadline for the India application has now been extended! India Program: Applications for the 2023-2024 academic year are open from December 1, 2022 and closes on February 28, 2023.  Reference letters due by March 8, 2023.

Each student is eligible for a maximum scholarship of USD 15000 towards the payment of the tuition fees only.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants who want to secure SWE Scholarships must fulfill the eligibility criteria listed below:

  • Only women candidates are eligible
  • Must pursue ABET-accredited programs in the field of engineering, computing, or technology.
  • Undergraduate/community college applicants must be planning to study an ABET-accredited program.
  • Masters and Ph.D. candidates must be enrolled or accepted at a school with ABET-accredited programs
  • Must not be fully funded for tuition, fees, and books or equivalent.
  • Only full-time students are eligible for this scholarship.
    • Nontraditional and reentry students are exempted.


Application Process

Applicants are required to register on the official website and create the login id and password to submit an application form.

  1. Select the level of class to form a drop-down menu.
  2. Complete the necessary information and 2 LOR in the application form.
  3. Verify all the information and submit the application form.

Selection Process

Application forms are evaluated on the basis of merit. Preference is given to those who have outstanding academic achievements and demonstrate enthusiasm for pursuing engineering.

Participation/Volunteering in extracurricular activities is also considered as a parameter for shortlisting the candidate.

The final selection is done on the basis of the merit factors and the number of scholarships available.

A few main eligibility points for the India program:

  • Only candidates who identify as a woman.
  • All applicants must be planning to study at a Washington Accord accredited program in engineering, technology, or computing in the upcoming academic year.  
  • All applicants must be enrolled or accepted at a Washington Accord accredited program and school in Tamil Nadu or Maharashtra.
  • You must be planning to attend full time.
  • You must not be fully funded for tuition, fees, and books or equivalent.
  • Transcripts must be in English. 

Eligibility for reentry scholarships

This scholarship is offered to help women obtain the credentials and skills for re-entering the workforce as engineers. Eligibility criteria are listed below:

  • Prior to the beginning of the present course of study, applicants must have been out of the technology and engineering workforce for a minimum of 2 years.
  • Both full time and part-time students are eligible.

Eligibility for non-traditional scholarships

  • Women who return to college for obtaining an engineering degree.
  • Prior to the beginning of the present course of study, applicants must have been out of schools for at least 2 years.
  • Both full time and part-time students are eligible.

Grant Details

SWE Scholarship Program provides an opportunity to study in the USA at various universities. The scholarship is given to women who want to pursue their education in engineering, technology, and computer-related courses.

India Scholarships are typically awarded in May for use during the upcoming academic year. Scholarship payments are made no later than August. Recipients are also announced in September.

ABET Scholarships are typically awarded in May (sophomore, junior, senior and graduate students) and July (freshmen students) for use during the upcoming academic year. Scholarship payments are made in September. Recipients are also announced in September.
