What is OPT?

Pre-Completion OPT
The Pre-completion OPT is a post study work visa in USA given to students who have a full-time offer letter from an educational institution in USA. The student has to be certified by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) to enroll as an F-1 student.
The course duration has to be at least 12 months. The students availing of a pre-completion OPT can work for a maximum of 20 hours a week when the classes are in session. Students can work full time during their holidays.
Post-Completion OPT
The Post-completion permit is offered to students who have completed their course and want to stay back in USA. You can stay back for a minimum of 12 months with a post completion OPT.
Once the permit is accepted, students can work part-time (at least 20 hours a week) or full-time. You need to secure a job within 90 days after graduation. The job you are applying with the Post Study Work Permit must be related to your area of study.

Who Can Apply?
Students who want to apply for the OPT must have themselves recommended for it by the Designated School Official (DSO) of the university. It is a person who will help and manage the international students in the university.
The DSO will recommend you by submitting your Form I20, the Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant students and mentioning the proper notion to the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). Form I-20 has to be submitted to the USCIS with an application fee along with all the required documents as mentioned in the form.
When to Apply for an OPT?
Students must apply for the OPT according to the following timeline:
STEM degree students applying for a Post Completion OPT must apply after the DSO provides the recommendation of an OPT for the SEVIS degree. You can apply 90 days before the completion of a full time academic year. You can start working after the completion of one year of studies. One can also apply for a STEM OPT extension 90 days before the current authorisation expires.

STEM degree students applying for a Pre-completion OPT should apply after the DSO enters the student records into the SEVIS degree. You can apply 90 days before the completion of one academic year. You can start your OPT employment only after the completion of 1 full-time academic year.
Non-STEM students applying for a Post-completion OPT must wait for their DSO to recommend their OPT into the SEVIS system. Students must apply within 30 days of their DSO entering the recommendation for OPT. You can apply 90 days before the completion of the degree but not later than 60 days after completion.
Non-STEM students applying for Pre-completion OPT need to apply after their DSO enters the recommendation of OPT in the SEVIS record. Students can apply 90 days before the completion of their 1 full academic year.
Note: You can apply for a 24 months extension of the post-completion OPT authorization as an F1 student with a degree in the STEM Degree Program list. Students must be employed by an employer enrolled in and using an E-verify.
