How is hostel life at NIT Surathkal?

Rohan BoseBtech Civil Engineering, National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal (2020)

Hostel life at NITK is great and teaches a lot of things that you will carry forever. People here are cooperative and friendly, willing to assist you in any way possible.

  1. Diversity- The student crowd is very diverse, from the north and south India allotted random rooms that let you expose yourself to students with different backgrounds across India. Upon interaction, you gain a lot of knowledge and insight.
  2. Seniors- You can approach any senior during or after your class hours, or even interact with them during a sport. The connections with seniors are certainly going to benefit you in the future as they not only help you to settle into college life but also help when it comes to switching jobs and recommendations.
  3. Physical Fitness- The campus is equipped with a swimming pool, playgrounds, and a gym where students are allowed to play and workout even before exam time. You can regularly enjoy playing any sport of your choices like cricket, badminton, football or basketball.
  4. Leisure time- Whenever you have a lot of free time in your hands, you can invest it in your hobby or any club that you are interested in. There is definitely going to be free time when you are in your hostel room.
  5. Electricity- There are huge generators, in spite of that whenever there are power cuts, they last long, though it rarely happens.
  6. Food- The mess food is not that good as said by many students. The student council has now made many changes which are going to improve the food quality. There are several canteens and food points also available in case you don't like mess food.

Other than this, you can go on trips with your hostel mates whenever there is a holiday. Some of the interesting destinations are Goa, Mangalore, Kerala, etc. Thus, the overall hostel experience at NITK Surathkal is pretty amazing.

How are the girls hostels at NIT Surathkal?

Aayush KhuranaStudied M.Tech from University of Allahabad

My friend studies in NIT Surathkal and the 295-acre campus is exquisite. My friend resides in the hostel there and he has shared his experience with me.

To begin with, there are 5 girls’ hostel blocks named as follows- GH1, GH2, GH3, GH4, and GH5. The recent addition to the already existing 4 blocks, is the GH5, and it is the best one of the lot but is available to only some final year students after qualifying for the lucky draw.

Here are some more particulars:

  • In the first and second year, you will have to share a room with 2 or even 3 students. As you move to the 3rd and subsequently 4th year, you will be able to get a single occupancy hostel room. The hostels’ buildings are further divided on the basis of the course you select in the first year.
  • There are time restrictions though for girls, as follows- 7:30 for first-year students and 9:30 for the subsequent years.
  • As for facilities available in the hostels; there is a night canteen, a mess with ice cream serving twice a week, and a shopping complex with grocery and fruit shops.
  • In the room, there are chairs, a table, a steel bed, and an almirah.

All these hostels have WiFi or LAN available, but the connectivity is good only in the newly constructed GH5.

Is hostel compulsory in nit surathkal?

Sreeja PrasadStudied at National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal

It is not compulsory for students to opt for hostels at NIT Surathkal. A number of PGs and rented apartments are available for students around Surathkal as well as Mangaluru.

But there are various benefits of staying in the college hostel.

  • The hostel experience is worth it all. It will help you learn many things. You will get to interact with people from various backgrounds, which in turn helps in improving communication skills.
  • You will have an academic advantage as friends and class toppers are next door and can be asked for help or last-minute assignments.
  • You won’t need to worry about transportation at late-night college events or fests.
  • There will be a lot of fun, games, celebrations and late-night talks with friends.
  • You will also have the access to the whole beach anytime.

Infrastructure wise NIT Surathkal hostels are not that great. However, it is a whole other experience to stay in a college hostel and you should not miss out.

Which has better hostel facilities, NIT Surathkal or NIT Warangal?

Megha RohillaMegha Rohilla

One of my relatives has resided in NIT Warangal hostels. Based on his experience, I can give the following information:

  • NIT Warangal has Asia's biggest hostel and it is given to B.Tech, M.Tech, and BCA freshers. There are both single and double rooms.
  • On the ground floor, there is a snacks corner, Amul shop, and coffee and tea shops as well. This is a hangout place for all the students.
  • There is another big hostel which is given to 3rd and 4th-year students with single and double rooms.
  • For girls, the hostels are not as good as the boys’ hostels.
  • In the first year, you will be accommodated with 4 people in one room due to space issues.
  • You will also be restricted from moving out of the hostel at any time during 1st year.
  • For the second-year students, an old hostel is provided where the washrooms desperately need renovation and the rooms are not in good condition.
  • For 3rd and 4th year, you might get good rooms which will be spacious and comfortable. Although new hostels are being developed, the facilities might change in the coming years.

When talking about NIT Surathkal, the hostel facilities are fine. In the 1st and the 2nd year, you will have sharing rooms. From the 3rd year onwards you will get single accommodations. Internet connectivity in the hostels is not very good. The girls are provided washing machines. There is a night canteen on the hostel premises. For boys, there are no in and out timings.

Which NITs have a lift in academic and hostel building among NIT Surathkal, NIT Hamirpur, and NIT Nagpur?

Sanam SharmaB.Tech+M.Tech Dual Degree in Electronics and Communication, National Institute of Technology, Hamirpur (2023)

My cousin recently enrolled in NIT Hamirpur and definitely loves the state-of-the-art facilities. It provides and its modern infrastructure. It has excellent facilities in its 320 acres area which includes a computer centre, a library with over 100,000 books, an auditorium, a guest house, sports grounds, solar heaters, hostels, gym, and of course- lifts.

NIT Hamirpur has a lift facility in the departments which offer UG programs. Some more lifts have been added in some of the newly built hostels which are for students in the second year and beyond, much Iike NIT Nagpur has a lift in the new academic block and the new hostel.

Another point here, the New Hostels are for girls and boys in the first year, only.
