Brief College Review By IITian - IITG

Remarks :

The admission process is very simple. You have to take JEE MAINS followed by JEE ADVANCED. These examinations involve basic elementary science of classes 11th and 12th. The Application forms are released in the months of December and February for Mains and in April for advanced every year. You have to be appearing in class 12th in the year of taking the examination. There is no specific reservation for General students.

Course Curriculum Overview :

Mechanical Engineering BTech course is one of the most reputed courses at IIT Guwahati. It is also the best branch in IIT Guwahati. The faculties are top-notch. Most professors are very well versed in their subjects and give proper question practice as well. Along with professors TA and mentors are also provided to help us in better understanding the subject. Each semester has one to three quizzes, one midsem and one endsem for each subject. Practicals and tutorial classes also take place.

Internships Opportunities :

Internship starts from 4th semester onwards. Some students also get PIOs (Pre interhsip offers). Placement and interhsip cell helps in the process, in preparing the resume and internship process. Projects are done in 6th semester onwards. Most internship are accompanied with stipend.

Placement Experience :

From the 7th semester onwards students start getting placed through PPOs. On-campus placements take place in the 8th semester. More than 50 companies visited here last year. Companies like JLR, Microsoft, and Sprinklr were the top recruiters. The highest package was 2 crores +. The average package was also around 20 lakhs. Around 80% of students were placed in the mechanical branch while others opted for higher studies. A good number of students go for higher studies abroad. My plan is also to go for higher studies abroad or any IIM.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :

The fees are pretty average when compared to other colleges in India. The facilities provided are top-notch. Mess and hostel facilities are also very good. Scholarships are given to students who belong to the EWS category. On and Off-campus internship is also available from the 4th semester onwards.

Campus Life :

The campus life is one of the best in the country. Cultural fest Alcheringa takes place I. January which is the biggest cultural fest in North East India. Techniche is the annual techno-management fest which takes place in the months of August and September. Spirit and Spardha are the sports events. Manthan and Kirti are inter-hostel events. These events give us good refreshments from the academics of the college. Sports facilities are very well developed. Students who do well are trained and also participate in inter-IIT events. IIT Guwahati has recently bagged the runner-up prize at the aquatics meet held at IIT Gandhinagar. Clubs like photography, music, dance, fine arts, cooking, astronomy, music, acting, and many more are very active and also participate in various events throughout the year.

Hostel Facilities :

The rooms are very spacious and shared between two students. They are very well-lit and ventilated. The number of restrooms is adequate. Even some rooms have a balcony or an attached toilet as well. Mess food is one of the best in the country. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are delicious, unlike the common myth that college food isn't good. A special dinner is made on every Sunday. Hostel registration is done along with the college admission process and is very smooth and easy.

Placement Experience:

The placement of the college is quite good. we cannot disclose the name of the company visiting the campus because the training and placement cell of NIT SILCHAR did not allow us to disclose the names of the companies. My plan after getting my degree is to go through the UPSC exam.

Course Curriculum Overview:

Because I was interested in this course. Here the faculty-to-student ratio would be around 1:25 which is very good we can clarify our doubts by asking the faculty, the Qualification of the teaching method will mostly be the same, they are PhD, but their teaching experience plays a major role and their teaching method varies from faculty to faculty but it would be nice. Term exams would be around 5 months Difficulty in passing the exams depends on the faculty.

From the 6th sem onwards students are eligible for campus. As per the guidelines of the training and placement cell, the name of the company visited can't be disclosed. There are too many companies visiting the campus for recruitment. Almost all the students who are eligible for placements get placed with a good package.

Till now placement percentage is at a good level. From 6th semester students became eligible for placements. Most of the students get placed. From what I have heard short listing of candidates is based on cgpa basis. Skills are most important to go to software companies.

Placement Experience:

The placement season in the college is a very important one. Even before that, students get to do internships from 2nd year of BTech, providing them exposure to all kinds of companies and job sectors. All kinds of companies like Google, Microsoft, Oracle, Amazon, Uber make their way out here in search of bright minds capable of developing the companies further. They even provide the students with Pre Placement Offers, if their internship performance is commendable. The highest package goes upto above 2 crore INR per year, with average packages of above 25 lakhs INR per year. Above 85% of the students get placed in the end, with the others interested in higher studies. Nobody is left idle. My plans after BTech are to pursue a well paying job with a good working atmosphere.
