It’s better to look for options other than IIIT Vadodara for an M. Tech at CSE. Your IIIT degree from here would be a waste of a huge amount of money. A degree from IIIT-V would not help you in landing a 7 LPA job at the very least.
They do not own a proper college building. Be it infrastructure, labs, or assistant lecturers that have graduated from the same institutes, all are below average. The placement opportunities are as good as non-existent.
I have a few friends at the institute and according to them, M.Tech students are quite neglected. They are not even allotted permanent hostel rooms. This is a case in all the new IIITs. Therefore, you should avoid opting for the new IIITs as they do not have a campus of their own. You have the choice of taking a year drop and prepare for GATE. Evaluate your options and go for an institution that provides a guaranteed opportunity for good placements.
The placement is not good for M.Tech courses. Pursuing an M.Tech from SVNIT is a better option if one wishes to prepare for competitive exams simultaneously. Taking out time for preparation isn’t difficult if one is focused and disciplined.
In 2022,18 students were successfully placed on campus from M.Tech Mechanical. The highest package was 9.42 LPA, the average package was 6.86 LPA, and the lowest package was 5 LPA. As for M.Tech Manufacturing, 21 students were successfully placed on campus. The highest package was 9.58 LPA, the average package was 6.29 LPA, and the lowest package was 4.80 LPA.
Some M.Tech specializations like Computer Science, Communications System, CAD/CAM and Structure receive a few core companies for placements. But that number is far from satisfactory. Moreover, very few people are selected for these jobs. Mechanical, Thermal System Design, SMFE and MSc. Physics, mainly receive teaching offers.
Thus, the placements for M.Tech Mechanical are not satisfactory at SVNIT.
IISc Bangalore cutoff 2021 for GATE was 680 for M.Tech CSE program. Different IITs have different GATE cutoffs for their CS Major. Usually, the required cutoff stays with the rank band of 700-750. In 2021, the required GATE cutoff for CS at IIT Madras and IIT Kharagpur were 816 and 776 respectively.
One of my friends studied environmental engineering at NIT Trichy. According to him, he is quite satisfied with this college placement. He further mentions that this college provides the best placement for the students of M.Tech compared to other IIT colleges.
He claimed that NIT Trichy is better than all the newer IITs and other NITs. This college is even better than IIT Roorkee in terms of M.Tech placement opportunities.

Obviously, the placement stats differ every year but the percentage of the students from the M.tech branch is around 63.2% this year. It is quite good considering the pandemic situation.
I think the prospect of doing an MTech in NITs like NIT Trichy, Warangal, Calicut and in new IITs like IIT BBS, IIT GANDHINAGAR, IIT HYDERABAD are equally good. However, being an MTech student from IIT Bhubaneswar myself I can say IITBBS is a better choice for you.
It depends on your interest in and knowledge of the core subject. NIT Warangal is the best choice, as they offer quality education to the students. Let us look into a detailed view of Environmental Engineering
It is one of the trending courses, as it is the fastest-rising sector in India. The increase in population is directly proportional to the increase in pollution around the world. The contaminated air and water resources will put human life in crisis, thereby increasing the demand for environmental engineering in the coming decade. It is better to do a certification course on online platforms like Coursera to enrich your portfolio.
So you can opt for an M.Tech. in Environmental Engineering at NIT Warangal.
Based on placements, coding culture, and academic environment here is how I will rank the second-generation IITs
Overall, most IITs are similar, and thus distance from home should be the major criterion to be considered.
IIT Guwahati is one of the premier institutes in India for engineering and its MTech program in mechanical engineering is considered to be of high quality, with a strong faculty, good infrastructure, and a well-rounded curriculum. The program is also known for its research-oriented approach, which allows students to work on cutting-edge projects and gain hands-on experience.
MTech Mechanical has 5 specializations, namely
My knowledge is only limited to Fluid and Thermal although all other specializations have similar scenarios.
Overall, IT Guwahati is a great choice for those interested in pursuing an MTech in mechanical engineering.
For Electronics Communication Engineering or ECE, NIT Warangal will be the better choice among all the NITs mentioned. NIT Warangal is constantly placed among the top 3 NITs of the country and offers better placement. NIT Warangal also offers one of the best research facilities among all NIT. The preference order should be NIT Warangal>NIT Allahabad>NIT Durgapur>NIT Delhi.
The table below shows a comparison of the M.Tech ECE program offered by the NITs mentioned in the question.

MTech in Mechanical Engineering comprises various specializations. The cutoff for each specialization varies. Usually, the highest cut-off is for machine design then fluid and thermal science followed by CAM and computational mechanics. If you are attending the counseling you have to specify the preference order among these four. So depending on your rank, you might get admission to a specialization you did not want to study.
I recommend that you attend the counseling and don’t make assumptions beforehand. Sometimes the wrong train leads you to the right destination. It’s better to explore all options to determine what’s best for you.
