How is the social life of a MS/MTECH student at IIT Madras?

AD
Anirban Dasgupta Posted On : March 30th, 2023
studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras

The word “social life” barely exists in the dictionary of an MS/MTech student at IIT Madras. They spent their time holed up in labs. But some don’t want to miss out on campus life and leave no opportunity to have fun.

I have seen M.Tech students go to CFI, and participate in most events and talks like EMLs, TechSoc, LitSoc, Sports, Gym, Swimming, Art, volunteer, and some are even part of Shaastra, Saarang team.

These events are one kind of life experience and missing out on them means you are missing a major part of your college experience. Make sure you take breaks between the extensive research work and manage your time well in such a way that you can balance both extracurriculars and lab work. You will have a lot of time on your hand during vacations so make the most of it.

Which is better for an MTech in electrical engineering, NIT Trichy or IIT Guwahati?

BG
Bidita Ghose Posted On : May 5th, 2023
Lives in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India

The choice of the institute for pursuing an MTech in Electrical Engineering depends on what you want from your Masters.

  • For those on the lookout for placements, NIT Trichy has a good placement scenario, especially for Electrical Engineering. They are even better than some well-known IITs in M.Tech, especially Power Systems.
  • However, if you are willing to pursue a career in research after MTech (Ph.D.) then you will have to give great importance to the choice of the institute. An IIT is best suitable for prospective Ph.D. holders as they have global recognition too.

Ultimately, the better institute is a matter of preferences and career prospects.

Do IIT Guwahati M.Tech (computational mechanics) students get placed?

SG
Sohini Ghose Posted On : May 5th, 2023
studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati

Yes, students of IIT Guwahati MTech Computational Mechanics get placed in both core and non-core companies with decent packages. These students are allowed to sit for almost every core company that visits the IIT Guwahati campus. In Fact, there are many companies that prefer CM students over students from other branches.

The placement percentage is around 60–70% considering placement statistics of the past few years. There are many students who embark on a career in research through Ph.D. in foreign universities. Getting recommendations from IIT Guwahati’s professors will make your OhD easier.

IIT tag will fetch you jobs off campus too, so don’t worry, you will end up with a job either way.

How is NIT AGARTALA for doing an MTech in VLSI and nanotechnology?

SM
Spandita Majumder Posted On : September 18th, 2023
Studied at National Institute of Technology, Agartala (2019)

NIT Agartala is best suited for people who have been struggling to secure a good GATE rank. Here you get multiple opportunities like pursuing an MTech in VLSI design alongside preparing for exams like ESE. Instead of believing in others, it's better to visit the institute personally and see for yourself if it suits your expectations or not.

  • You can prepare for exams in your free time and also for the PSU interview.
  • You will become more determined and strong when you leave the institute
  • You will master self-learning here.
  • You will have access to excellent internet service on campus.
  • The flight tickets to and fro the college are very cheap so commuting is not an issue.

NIT Agartala can be considered a decent option if you have no better choice for an MTech.

What is it like to pursue MS/PHD in Biomedical Engineering from the Dept of Applied Mechanics at IIT Madras?

AG
Aditi Goswami Posted On : March 30th, 2023
studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (2018)

My brother shared his experience of pursuing an MS in Biomedical Engineering (BME) at the Dept of Applied Mechanics (App Mech). BME is a multidisciplinary branch and covers a number of fields. The BME department has 8 professors in different fields of Biomedical Engineering namely

  1. Prof. Arun K Thittai - Biomedical Ultrasound Lab
  2. Prof. M. Manivannan- Touch Lab
  3. Prof. Ramakrishnan S - Non-Invasive Imaging and Diagnostics Lab
  4. Prof. Ramasubba Reddy M - Biomedical Instrumentation and Signal Processing Lab.
  5. Prof. Raghavendra Sai VV - Bio Sensors Lab
  6. Prof. Saumendra K Bajpai- Cell Mechanics Lab
  7. Prof. Sujatha N - Biophotonics Lab
  8. Prof. Varadhan S K M- Neuromechanics Lab

My brother worked in Biomedical Ultrasound Lab under the guidance of Prof. Arun K Thittai and was fortunate enough to have graduated with two conference abstracts and two journal publications in reputed journals of the Biomedical Ultrasound Imaging field. He had the absolute delight of having received his degree within 2 years which is a rare case.

From his batchmate's experience, even the other professors were approachable and humble, always ready to guide him in every possible way. It’s the professors’ continuous nudging that enabled students to achieve their research goals.

If you are concerned about the job prospects then rest assured as most of his batchmates landed good jobs in top R& D companies of India. So, go for this program without much thinking and pursue your passion in the same.

What is the selection procedure for M.Tech students at IIT BHU?

SB
Shivani Bose Posted On : August 14th, 2020
M.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology Varanasi (2016)

IIT BHU shortlisted students for M.Tech admission on the basis of score in GATE and only those students who apply for the counselling process at COAP portal are considered for admission. IIT BHU also conducts tests/interviews for the shortlisted students. If you are shortlisted, the institute will give you a date. The students will need to visit the institute for a written exam and personal interview. The written exam and interview will be conducted separately for each specialization. There are a few specializations for which IIT BHU offers direct admission but mostly students go through a test or interview.

The final selection is based upon 70% weightage of GATE performance and 30% weightage is given to the candidate’s performance in an interview/test as per MHRD guidelines.

One can check their final results on COAP to confirm your admission in IIT BHU or not. If you get the admission offer in COAP you need to confirm and lock your seat in the institute. The admission process at IIT BHU is done through online mode.

How is the industrial power and automation for an M.Tech at NIT Calicut?

DS
Devesh Saraf Posted On : August 21st, 2023
Studied at NIT Calicut

NIT Calicut Industrial Power and Automation branch is a perfect mix of Electrical Engineering and Instrumentation/Automation. It comprises important elements of both fields and is a great choice for students interested in the field.

  • However, if your primary goal is to get placed , then you have come to the wrong place. Most companies visit NIT Calicut to recruit BTech students and they are given preference to MTech students. A few exceptional cases get placed in huge firms though.
  • The faculty pool is very small and the most highly regarded professor of the branch is Dr Ashok S.
  • The branch has excellent lab facilities and is therefore a great choice for research enthusiasts. The IPA labs are highly advanced labs with modern equipment. The labs have PLC, SCADA, DCS, VFD, BLDC setup, and DSP setups too.

Overall the IPA course at NIT Calicut is a great choice if you are interested in the field and want to pursue a career in research.

How is Building Technology and Construction Management from IIT Madras and how can I get in it?

SD
Shweta Das Posted On : March 30th, 2023
Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (2019)

There are 2 major ways to get admission in Building Technology and Construction Management at IIT Madras.

GATE: Under this, you are expected to score high in GATE, something around 99+.

Sponsored Candidate: This is further divided into freshers and experienced candidates.

    • Freshers: A program by L&T called Build India Scholarship shortlists Civil and Electrical students based on their GATE scores. These candidates are required to have an excellent academic background and have to appear for an aptitude test and finally for an interview before getting selected. L&T has collaborated with IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, NIT Trichy, and NIT Surathkal. Around 60 freshers are selected from all over the country under this program.
  • Experienced: Experienced candidates are selected by programs under L&T, Brigade group, and URC. L&T selected 60 experienced candidates from their own companies who have 2 or more years. They need to go through regular screening of aptitude tests and interviews to get selected. The usual experience required is 2-3 years.

Curriculum: The curriculum is well structured with the right combination of Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineers and Architects. The peer group is extremely diverse and thus makes the learning process dynamic. The coursework has a practical approach with regular site visits and course projects. There are versatile subjects to choose from.

Faculty: The course has world-class professors who are mostly Ph.D. holders from top universities in the world like Stanford, Clemson, and UoM.

Extracurricular: IIT Madras lays special emphasis on extracurricular activities like sports, dance, music, public speaking, and writing.

All in all, this is an amazing program offering the best opportunities one could ask for.
