How good is the IIM Ahmedabad hostel?

SG
Sweta Gupta Posted On : February 24th, 2022
studied at Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (2020)

At IIM Ahmedabad, rather than hostels, there is a dorm culture. Usually, around 25-40 students reside in a dorm.

  • IIM Ahmedabad campus is divided into two parts, i.e. old campus and the new campus. Dorms 1-18 are on the old campus, while other dorms are on the new campus. Old campus dorms were built earlier and have a heritage feeling with red bricks.
  • New campus dorms have better infrastructure. The rooms are bigger. Some rooms even have ACs or private bathrooms.
  • Basic amenities like bed, mattress, mirror, whiteboard, study table, chair, cupboard, shoe racks, curtains are provided for students.

There is room for improvement, but you won’t face any major issues. You will love your time there on campus.

Which hostel should I prefer for my first year at IIEST Shibpur?

JB
Janhvi Bakshi Posted On : March 1st, 2021
B.E. Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (2017)

To be very clear, you will not be given the option to choose your own hostel in the first year. The authority allots the hostels after entire admission process is completed. After the student reports at the respective hostel and registers his/her name, rooms are allotted.

In general, first-year boys are provided accommodation in Hostel 8, Hostel 9 and Hostel-10. On the other hand, first-year girls are given accommodation in Nivedita.

Some brief information regarding the allotment, change, and experiences in hostels are listed below:

  • After completion of the admission process, a hostel allotment certificate is issued. On presenting the certificate, you will be allotted the room.
  • Students going in groups can request a joint stay to the hostel caretaker, but the maximum size per room is limited to 4 students only.
  • Almost all hostels in IIEST Shibpur are similar to each other in respect of facilities, hostile environment, etc. The main interest lies in your way of living. It will be up to you only to spend the best years of your college life.
  • If a student wants a change in the room in the same hostel, he/she can do so by just an unofficial mutual decision with an interested student.
  • Unofficial change in a hostel can cause difficulty because the hostel superintendent performs round to check whether only allotted students are staying or not. It is impossible to change the hostel during your 1st year.
  • In the rooms, students from various regions and departments stay together in a homogeneous way. Living with unknown people has its own advantages, and sometimes students get to stay with interesting fellows.

Making friends out of an unknown crowd is needed in the first year of college. Staying with known people is not as interesting as making new friends out of roommates. Discussing different topics during a hangout, getting some private time because of different class timing, and enjoying life in the hostel rooms become a part of life in those glorious years.

DB
Devlina Bose Posted On : March 2nd, 2021
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Bhilai (IIT-BH) (2019)

As you all know that IIT Bhilai is quite new as it started in 2016. So, it's working in its temporary campus until the permanent one gets ready.

Despite the temporary campus, you’ll still get a hostel with good facilities. Currently, there are three different hostels:

  • Castle Dio - Freshers
  • Castle Teresa - Girls
  • Castle Ena- Senior Boys

The mess facility is only provided at Castle Ena so you will have to go there for dining. Also, a bus service is there which picks up students to mess.

Some basic features you need to know:

  • You will be allotted four-seater rooms
  • WiFi facility is provided which has a good speed reaching up to 2 mbps. Downloading speed is great via laptop with up to 10 Mbps or more.
  • You will get ample chances to play Indoor games snooker, table, chess, carrom board. A badminton court is also there however you need to bring your own raquettes.
  • You can also watch TV in the recreation room inside the hostel.

These are some of the facts about the hostels of IIT Bhilai. If you find it appealing enough you should go for it. Ultimately it will be your decision.

How are the bathrooms in the boys' hostels at IIEST Shibpur? Are they Indian-style bathrooms?

RM
Rohan Mitra Posted On : March 2nd, 2021
Studied at Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (2019)

Undoubtedly, this one of the most obvious questions that come to our mind when we are about to shift to a new place.

Bathrooms are extremely important for our day-to-day routine, so coming to your question the bathrooms in the boys’ hostels are quite good. My brother has spent one year as a hosteller in Hostel-9 named as B.Sen Hall and till now have no complaints regarding the bathrooms.

  • Do not worry about hygiene issues as they are properly cleaned on an everyday basis.
  • There are no water logging issues with bathrooms or toilets.
  • There is 24h running water and no issue of water shortages (But yes it may be difficult for you in the starting because of salty water).

Also, you can check the hostel fee structure down below:

Categories

OC/OBC/EWS

OC/OBC/EWS

52,000/- per semester

[34,500/- per semester including refundable caution money deposit of Rs. 4000 + Actual Food Bill (Rs. 17,500 to be paid in advance per semester]

SC/ST

37,000/- per semester

[19,500/- per semester including refundable caution money deposit of Rs. 4000 + Actual Food Bill (Rs. 17,500 to be paid in advance]

Yes, there are Indian-styled toilets. Some of my brother’s friends faced problems in the initial days as they were habituated to Western-styled but later on, they got adjusted to the situation and have no complaints.

How are the hostels at IIT Palakkad?

AS
Anubhav Singh Posted On : March 4th, 2021
IIT Palakkad (2019)

There are three hostels in IIT-Palakkad, two are old and one is new.

Old hostels:

  • Rooms: Rooms are spacious enough for 2 with windows and almirah. A study table is also provided.
  • Others: Basic requirements like heater, geyser, etc are provided by the hostel. Availability of water is 24/7.
  • Sports: A Volleyball court is available in front of the hostel. In addition to this two TT tables and an equipped gym are present and usable. You are also free to use the Football/Cricket ground and Basketball court.
  • WiFi: There is no LAN Port in the rooms, but Hi-speed WiFi connections are available.
  • Nigh-life: The hostel food is good and satisfying. The night canteen is open till 12:30 pm and a food court is available till 10:00 pm in the Ahalia Hospital Complex. Thus the issue of night cravings is sorted.

New Hostel:

The hostel-3 OR H-3 is the latest inclusion in the list of hostels of IIT-Palakkad. This answer would be somewhat the same for both boys and girls.

  • It is beautiful and pretty much seems to me like a dream hostel. Double rooms (spacious and furnished with study table, almirah), attached baths, common room (in the hostel itself) equipped with a huge Smart LED TV. You can watch TV shows, Cricket matches. There are also indoor games like Table Tennis, Carrom, Chess.
  • Common Room is common for both girls and boys and you get to interact with everyone and work together at times. There is a well-equipped gym too in case you care about your physical health and regular Martial Arts Classes by Dr. Swaroop Sahoo and Yoga classes too. There’s a volleyball court as well.
  • Most importantly, it has the Innovation Lab housing 3D printers, CNC Routers, almost anything you need to make a product prototype, from tools to materials, you name it we have it (all open for students), and other labs too.
  • Water coolers (for hot, normal, and cold water), warm water for bathing purposes, and Washing Machines on each floor, all for 24 x 7 (Yeah, people even wash clothes 3 in the morning).
  • There is a SAC Office and hostel manager’s office too.
  • H-3 is home to both boys and girls. There are different sections.

The maintenance of the rooms is on you. You need to clean it, including the bathrooms.

How is the hostel accommodation for 1st-year M.Tech students at NIT Calicut?

NS
Nishat Suri Posted On : April 15th, 2021
M Tech from National Institute of Technology, Calicut (2017)

Hostels in NIT C for the PG students are not good. Students are allotted to the Professor's Apartment in their first tear.

  • The apartment consists of a flat which has 3 rooms, kitchen and 1 hall i.e. equivalent to a 3 BHK flat. But the number of students in each flat depends on the number of rooms each flat possesses.
  • Along with that, some students get the golden opportunity of residing in halls or even in the kitchens.
  • The toilets according to the number of students are always less and then there is always a queue outside the bathroom gate in the morning. There are a total of 14 to 16 students per flat.
  • The journey from apartments to college is like going on a trek. Now they have started a bus service.

This was the scenario of the first year and for the second year students, the scenario is a bit different. The second-year students are mostly accommodated in the MBA hostels which have toilets attached with the rooms but are far from the previous apartments where you were living in the first year.

Wi-Fi is available on the campus and works well for the new buildings and hostels. At the time of joining they will tell you that the new hostels are under construction and will be ready to move soon.

Please take a note that if possible go for the kitchen as that will be the only single room accommodation available for you as a PG student in NIT Calicut.

Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs): What are the facilities at an IIT hostel?

AG
Anamika Gupta Posted On : February 17th, 2022
M.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay

Some of my friends are IIT Madras alumni. Here is their insight into the hostel facilities of the institute.

  • The hostels have 24 hours internet connection. Internet speed goes up to 100 Mbps. There’s a 1GB per day data usage cap.
  • There is an airconditioned tech room that stays open 24 hours a day. The tech rooms have power tools. You can use the tools to get simple carpentry stuff done.
  • You will have access to the Center of Innovation, a tech-conductive facility. Among other things, it has a 3D printing machine, a workstation for carrying out powerful stimulations. Most tech junkies on campus usually crowd over there.
  • Every hostel usually has a hostel room, a TV room, a computer room, and an indoor games room. All basic amenities are available in the hostels along with washing machines and portable water supply.
  • The hostel rooms can feel a bit constricted at times. But every hostel has a huge central ground.
  • Power cuts are quite rare. There are also utility support staffs to help you out even during night.
  • The HUL snack station stays open from evening to late at night every day. There are also many eateries near the campus.

A unique trait of the IIT Madras campus is its forested area. Although it is outside the boundaries of the hostel zone, you can wander off to this area when you need a Psychological high.

What are the facilities provided in IIM hostels?

SS
Saksham Sharma Posted On : June 28th, 2021
Studying B.Com from Sharda University (2019)

One of my friends is from IIM Kashipur, so I will be sharing his experiences, which will only refer to the hostel facilities provided by IIM Kashipur.

  • The hostels are single occupancy, with one common room and six rooms on each floor.
  • Each floor's common room includes amenities such as a refrigerator, water purifier, washing machine, microwave, and a low-rise table with six stools.
  • A fantastic location for group studies, completing a number of assignments and relaxing.
  • The rooms are good and spacious. Each room has an attached bathroom and a personal balcony.
  • The rooms have a bed, a table, a chair, a large almirah, and a bookshelf.
  • All the rooms and the common area have radiant cooling, which cools in the summer and heats in the winter.
  • As the hostel is only two years old, the majority of the furniture is brand new and in good condition.
  • In addition to Wi-Fi, we have LAN ports for faster internet access.

We have an online portal where we can post any issues with hot water, RO filter replacement, tube light replacement, or any other hostel-related issues. The problems are resolved on a priority basis within a few days. Honestly, hostel facilities are one of the best things you get in IIM.

Is it compulsory to stay in a hostel for 1 year at NICMAR after 3 months of staying in the NICMAR hostel in Pune?

CC
Chimayee Chatterjee Posted On : September 22nd, 2021
National Institute of Construction Management and Research, Pune (2019)

No, it is not mandatory to stay at the hostel in your 1st year. You can leave the hostel at any point if you feel the requirement. However, it is best if you stay there because it can help you in the upcoming exams. It can assist in saving up your travel time.

You can also acquire a lot of assistance from the people staying at the hostel, besides you. The major pitfall is usually felt by students who live outside the hostel premises as it can be difficult to run back and forth between your residence and the campus.
