Should I choose JU computer or IIT BHU Mechanical?

NG
Nandini Ghose Posted On : August 14th, 2020
Jadavpur University - Department of Construction Engineering (2019)

IIT BHU is one of the prestigious IITs of India and is 100 years old. The Mechanical Department of IIT BHU has good faculties and excellent lab facilities. Course Curriculum of Mechanical Engineering is designed in such a way to provide students with industrial skills. The Mechanical Department at IIT BHU has good placement stats having companies visiting campus for jobs in both cores as well as non-core profiles.

Some of the well-known core companies visiting the campus include DRDO, IOCL, HUL, Jaguar, TATA motors, Reliance, Maruti, L&T, BPCL, etc. The list of companies is not only restricted to the core, but students get offers from non-core sectors too like Software/IT, Consulting, Analytics, Finance, Education, etc. It has been observed that most of the students are placed in well-known organizations with an average package ranging from 10-12 lacs CTC. The Highest package in the core sector is around 31 Lacs CTC while in non-core is nearly 41 lacs CTC. Thus, the overall placement percentage of students for the Mechanical Engineering Department is above 90%.

JU is also a good college with some of the good faculties and infrastructure. It is considered one of the best colleges in West Bengal after IITKGP. One of the perks of joining JU is that fee is only 10k per semester which is quite cheap when compared to IIT BHU. Placements are very good and on par with other colleges and students get placed in top companies such as Amazon, Microsoft, Oracle, Adobe, Samsung, Goldmann Sachs, etc. Students were offered an average package of 12 LPA CTC while the highest being offered was 39 LPA CTC by Adobe.

It is difficult to compare two institutes for different branches. You should choose the institute based on your branch of interest.

How difficult is it to change your branch at IIT Indore from civil to CS?

SB
Shivam Behera Posted On : June 20th, 2023
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Indore (2020)

It’s extremely difficult to get your branch changed to CS at IIT Indore. To increase your chances maintain your CGPA above 9 and make sure you have no backs. Here are some regulations regarding the branch change policy here.

  • Only 1% of the total admitted students in that year will be eligible for branch change without any constraints.
  • Others will be evaluated on a merit basis. Students with CPI > 6.5 will only be eligible to apply.
  • The number of transfers to a certain branch should not exceed 10% of its sanctioned strength.
  • The number of students in the branch students are transferring from should not fall below 85% of its sanctioned strength.
  • Branch change will take place only at the beginning of the second academic year.

So go and get your luck tested at IIT Indore!

Which one would be better: production in Jadavpur university, power in Jadavpur university, mechanical in Jalpaiguri, or government engineering or mechanical in Kalyani govt. engineering?

MB
Madhurima Banerjee Posted On : October 22nd, 2021
B.E Chemical Engineering, Jadavpur University (2021)

Choose the course that interests you, college is a secondary thing. Here are some of the facts that may help you in choosing the right branch for you.

  • If you want to work in PSUs or Govt. sectors, it’s better to not choose Production Engineering as there are fewer recruiters.
  • Jadavpur is the best college you can get through WBJEE. If you choose Production or Power in JU, you will have good on-campus job opportunities.
  • Production Engineering is a branch of Mechanical Engineering itself. The syllabus will be more or less the same.
  • Mechanical at Kalyani University will be slightly better than Jalpaiguri. You may not get lucrative job packages at on-campus placement from Kalyani University but in the long run, you will have a much better hold with your Mechanical degree. You can expect well-paid jobs in the future.

Your future will depend on the branch you are choosing so choose according to your interest. All these Universities will offer you enough opportunities and resources to prosper. It’s up to you to use that well.

I would never recommend you to go for any core branch at new IITs. With the new IIT tag, ISM Dhanbad is a far better option as it was established in 1926 and enjoys global recognition in contrast to IIT Hyderabad, which is still under development. Both the colleges are poles apart in terms of infrastructure, facilities, etc.

The table below shows a head-on comparison of the placement scenario at both the institutes:

  • Located in a remote area, IIT Srirangam was established in 2013. It’s placement cell and academics is good.
  • One of my friends is studying at IIIT Pune, and it would be a good choice if you are opting for CSE. Despite its new campus, it is showing rapid improvement and performing better in academics, activities, and also has a good campus. Its placement cell is also good. Companies such as Accenture, TCS, Amazon, and many more come for campus placement.
  • As far as IIIT Una’s placement cell is concerned, it is also good and provides decent placement to students.

Therefore, you can choose CSE for any of these IIIT campuses. They all have good academics and placement records.

NIT Durgapur offers 4 years of B.Tech and 2 years of M.Tech in CSE. It is ranked 47th among other engineering institutes. Most of the faculty members of the CSE department are pursuing research in collaboration with CMERI, Indian Statistical Institute, Winona State University, USA, etc.

Course Fees:

Following is the fees for 1st Year which is the same for all branches of the respective institutes:

  • MNNIT Allahabad: The fee structure for B.Techis INR 84,666 whereas, for M.Tech, the institute charges INR 1.13 Lakhs.
  • NIT Durgapur: The institute charges 1.49 Lakhsfor B.Tech while for M.Tech, the fee is INR 94,10

Cut-off:

The cut off for JEE Main 2019 (round 7) is given below. As seen by the statistics, the opening rank for MNNIT Allahabad is lesser than that of NIT Durgapur, meaning it is tougher to get into MNNIT for ECE than getting into NIT Durgapur for CSE.

Institutes Opening Rank Closing Rank
MNNIT Allahabad (ECE) 3600 8433
NIT Durgapur (CSE) 6370 9193

Placement:

Core companies generally visiting for the CSE branch also offer placements for ECE branch students. This opens the option of additional companies for ECE students along with the core ECE companies.

  • MNNIT Allahabad:
  • Core companies like Qualcomm, Brahmos, BEL, Ansys offered salary packages of around 10-15 lakhs.
  • Along with this, students can also appear for non-core, software companies like Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Amazon, Flipkart, Oracle, Cisco, Samsung, Adobe, etc. offering salary packages of above 15 lakhs.
    • The placement percentage for ECE was recorded to be 90.63% in 2019. The average salary package was 10.95 lakhs and the highest package was 25.33 lakhs.
  • NIT Durgapur:
  • The CSE branch of NIT Durgapuroffers placements in core companies like TCS, IBM, Amazon, Microsoft, HSBC, J. P. Morgan, Goldman Sachs, Mu Sigma, etc.

Which is better for computer science - Thapar or NIT Delhi?

AB
Aditi Banerjee Posted On : October 11th, 2023
Lives in Bangalore

I have friends in other Thapar and NIT Delhi so I am the right person to answer your question. Based on their experiences, these are the key points of differences I derived

  • NIT Delhi has a better location because it is in Delhi.
  • Thapar has a better faculty pool and lab facilities than both NIT Delhi and NSIT.
  • Thapar also has an active research culture so if you are a research enthusiast, Thapar is a better option for you.
  • In terms of tag and brand name, NIT Delhi has the upper hand. Thapar University also has a good reputation but mainly in North India.
  • NIT Delhi charges much less fees than DTU and NSIT so it’s the clear winner in this aspect.
  • Infrastructure-wise, Thapar University tends to serve better.

Overall, it's a matter of preferences!

Which should I choose, EEE in NIT Surathkal, ECE in IIIT Bangalore, or CS in RVC?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : September 16th, 2023
lives in New Delhi

If you are given these options, your rank in JEE Mains must be near 10k, and that in KCET >= 100. I was faced with similar choices, so I am listing down the pros and cons of each option-

  • RVC- If you are a Bangalorean and don’t wish to go to a hostel, RVC is the ideal choice. You’ll be getting CSE, which is great. The faculty at RVC is good. It offers an indoor basketball court. Your peers would’ve aced their KCET. But the minus point is that there is a management quota.
  • IIIT Bangalore-T his is a great choice for you even if you are interested in CSE. The curriculum for ECE and CSE is mostly common for the first two years. Both branches study common topics like programming and computer architecture. Even a branch change is possible by getting on the Dean’s Merit List. Branch change is purely merit based.
  • NIT Surathkal- EEE from NITK is a great option. However, if you are interested in CS/IT, getting a branch change isn’t easy. Vacancy is low during branch change and its rules are quite rigid-
  1. The current branch’s strength must not decrease by more than 10%.
  2. The future branch’s strength must not increase by more than 10%.
  3. Category-wise allotment of seats is done, similar to JoSAA

If you are planning for an M.Tech in near future, choose IIITB. The iMtech will allow you to complete two degrees in five years, and you won’t be stressed over GATE exams. IIIT Bangalore offers the best placements. This is because Bangalore is the center of major IT and Electronics brands.

I chose iMtech at IIIT Bangalore because of these reasons. You must choose the option that best suits your personal preferences. All the three institutions are well renowned.

UM
Utsav Mukharjee Posted On : July 11th, 2022
B.Tech, Biotechnology from Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore (2019)

VIT Vellore CSE will be better than IIT Tirupati CSE. It follows an industry-relevant curriculum which is updated regularly. The specializations offered for CSE are as per the latest industry trends and demand. VIT Vellore placements are excellent for CSE. Each year around 99% of students get placed from the branch. The average CTC for the branch is around INR 6-7 LPA. Reputed companies such as Microsoft, Google, etc. recruit from the institute.
