Should I pursue electrical engineering at IIT Jammu or geophysics at IIT Kharagpur?

A
Admin Posted On : June 20th, 2024

I think I am qualified to answer this question as I graduated from IIT Kharagpur Geology and Geophysics department and I am working for ARM Group in the Middle East.

You should choose IIT Kharagpur due to following reasons:-

  • Geophysics offers great opportunities to apply numerical, quantitative, and computational methods to geological investigations.
  • IIT Kharagpur is ranked 6th in NIRF ranking while IIT Jammu is ranked 67th.
  • IIT KGP focuses on holistic development and thus has a rich extracurricular culture that helps develop bonds between students of different branches.
  • IIT Kharagpur has a median salary of 18 LPA, whereas IIT Jammu pays 17 LPA.
  • IIT Kharagpur is one of the oldest IITs, established in 1951. It has better infrastructure and a larger campus area of 2100 acres.

Which is better for pursuing a B.Des - the IIT in Bombay or NIFT?

RC
Ritwik Chowdhury Posted On : July 27th, 2022
PGDIM Supply Chain Management, National Institute of Industrial Engineering (2018)

For Fashion Design or Apparel Design, NIFT is the best institute in the country. If you aspire to become a designer or stylist, then choose NIFT. It offers many design specializations such as Fashion, Accessories, Textile, Leather, Knitwear, etc.

For Visual Communication and Product Design, IIT Bombay will be better. IITB basically offers Graphic Design, but it has more importance due to the IIT tag.

Is management degree from top colleges like IIM, ISB, XLRI, SP JIMR etc worth the money?

SD
Saunak Dasgupta Posted On : April 10th, 2023
ISB Hyderabad

If you are considering pursuing an MBA in India, it is important to note that all great B-schools in the country offer post-graduate diplomas/programs, but not degrees. However, obtaining a diploma/program from a reputable institute can have long-term benefits for your career. Here are some points to consider:

  • While a diploma/program may not be a degree, it still holds significant value in the job market, especially if it's from a well-respected institution.
  • The brand association that comes with being an alumnus of a prestigious institute can be invaluable throughout your career. It's not just about short-term benefits like campus placements, but the long-term network and reputation you build over time.
  • In challenging times, such as a downturn in the job market, having an association with a top B-school can provide a significant advantage. Recruiters and potential employers are more likely to take notice of your credentials if they recognize the institute's name.
  • Conversely, during good times, people may not be as concerned about your educational background or institute affiliation, making it more important to establish and maintain connections while you can.
  • When selecting an MBA program, it is crucial to consider the long-term view of your career. Think beyond immediate benefits like campus placement and focus on factors like the institute's reputation, network, and alumni presence.
  • A diploma/program from a great institution stays with you for a lifetime, so it's essential to choose wisely. Make sure to do your research and select an institute that aligns with your career goals and values.

Indian B-schools may offer post-graduate diplomas/programs rather than degrees, obtaining a diploma/program from a respected institution can have significant long-term benefits for your career. Be sure to consider factors like the institute's reputation, network, and alumni presence when selecting a program, and think beyond immediate benefits like campus placements.

Is VSSUT a tier 1 university?

Sabeer Chalana Posted On : October 12th, 2023

No, VSSUT is not a tier 1 university and neither are IITs and NITs. One needs to understand the fact that the Tier-1 and Tier-2 system is relevant in the US and not in India. It is a classification based on internationally competitive research outcomes of a university. Indian universities don’t come under this category yet. In India, tier-1 means a college with excellent placements. In reality, very few of our universities fare well when their research outcome is considered. Also, India does not have any specific body to provide ranking based on international competitive research outcomes. The NIRF ranks colleges generally.

One also needs to consider the fact that India is a developing country with limited resources. The budget for research is less compared to foreign universities.

It can thereby be concluded that VSSUT University is not a tier-1 university but it is one of the best institutions in Odisha.
