IIIT Hyderabad: what are some of the pros and cons about the on campus hostel... And what's the curfew?

AG
Ankur Gupta Posted On : July 28th, 2023
studied at International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad

IIIT Hyderabad hostels are considered decent with all the basic amenities one could ask for. Here are a few pros and cons of these hostels

Pros

  • The best part about these hostels is the ‘no curfew’ rule allowing you to come and go as your will.
  • The hostels are newer than that of old IITs and NITs so obviously are better designed and furnished.
  • IIIT Hyderabad does not have a huge campus like IITs so the distance between the campus and hostels is less saving both time and money for the students.
  • The mess is located inside the hostel and serves decent food.

Cons

  • The hostel administration is quite careless and does not pay heed to the students' complaints. But this citation is somewhat similar in all colleges these days.
  • The roofs of the hostel buildings are locked. Then again, this is a safety precaution.

Overall, IIIT Hyderabad hostel life is filled with a lot of freedom and comfort.

SPJIMR Information Management PGDM program is suitable for those who want to shift from technical IT to management and business roles. This unique course is updated annually to keep up with the latest developments in the IT field and is on par with the best B-schools around the world.

The faculty at SPJIMR are highly dedicated and valued for their academic excellence and business backgrounds. In addition to classroom courses, IM students learn from industry visits, guest lectures from corporate gurus and CXOs, and live projects designed to facilitate the use of theory in practice.

At SPJIMR, peer learning is highly effective, and there is a collaborative culture in place. Students are selected based on merit, and the competition is stiff due to the high quality of peers. Most IM students come with expertise in various domains, and they work together as a team on activities such as the Cross Course Project, which is a platform to piece together all learnings from the IM coursework and consult on a real IT business challenge.

The placement opportunities available in the IM specialization are regarded as a valuable benefit, and SPJIMR attracts top-tier firms like Microsoft, Amazon, Flipkart, HCL, GE, Make My Trip, Capgemini, Cognizant Business Consulting, Deloitte, and many more. The roles open for the IM area include IT consulting, Business Development, Product Management, and General Management in IT companies and e-Commerce majors, and Corporate IT roles (CIO growth path) in IT user companies. The advantage of the IM specialization is that both you and the firms find yourselves in a win-win situation when it comes to mapping skills versus roles.

What should be my specialization choice in SPJIMR application if I am interested in management consulting?

PN

Let me make this clear, there is no fixed specialization that will help you make it into counseling.

For working professionals: Companies that visit the campus for placements usually prefer Finance and Operations background. People with a technological background opt for tech consulting while many go for Sales and Operations consulting as well. The companies are not interested in specialization, rather they look for how good your CV is. So, we can say a guy from a pure manufacturing background who is currently studying marketing can also make it into consulting.

For freshers: The best specialization to choose to make it into a big consulting firm for a fresher is Finance. The concepts included in the Finance specialization are more connected with consulting. So if your area of interest covers both, Finance and Consulting, then opt for Finance while the target for consulting. As far as Operations is concerned, it’s not easy to get admission. Even if you do the chances are lower unless you do internships and projects.

Lastly, remember there is no direct relation between the choice of specialization and placements. Even if you fail to get into your desired company, know that it is not the end. You can slowly achieve your goal provided you are certain of it and are working hard towards achieving it.

How many people have changed their branches through internal sliding in NIT Agartala?

Namrata Das Posted On : September 18th, 2023

My brother was a student at NIT Agartala in 2015 and in his batch, a total of 34 students got their branch changed. He claimed the process to be very simple as the criteria were as easy as getting a CGPA of above 8.5 in the first two semesters with no backlog papers.

According to the official statement, a branch should not have more than a total of 10% increment of the total sanctioned strength of that branch. For instance, if the total batch size of CSE is 100, then only 10 students can change their branch to CSE from other branches. Owing to this criteria, the competition is intense but if you are motivated enough, trust me you can do it.

Think of joining the branch of your choice and you will stay motivated to work harder!

How difficult is it to upgrade your branch after 1 year at Thapar University?

AM
Agnish Mukherjee Posted On : August 8th, 2023
BE from Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology

I am assuming that you wish to change your branch to CSE as it is one of the most sought after branches at Thapar University. Mostly all the seats for CSE get filled up during the counseling, but 2 or 3 seats may remain vacant. Here are the two ways of changing your branch in Thapar University -

  1. December Test- During the month of December, usually towards the end, Thapar University conducts a test to fill the vacant seats in every branch. This test offers a branch change from the 2nd semester onwards. This exam is also open to students who have completed their 1st semester in another college. The paper pattern is similar to JEE Mains but it is way easier. However, the competition is high because many candidates take this exam. For CSE, you will need a single digit rank. Some seats are reserved for the children of faculty.
  2. Year end change- For this, get an 8.5+ CGPA in your first year. Doing so is neither difficult nor easy. The subjects in the first year are easier. Try to score maximum marks in the practicals and work hard for the mid sessionals. There are few chapters in mid sessionals and scoring is easier. For the end sems, chapters are way more in number and the weightage is around 45-55%. Therefore, pay good attention to other exams as well. For CSE, the CGPA requirement soars higher than an 8.5 because of high competition. In fact, it goes to 9.2+. You will have to work very hard.

These are the two ways to get your branch changed at Thapar University. Both require hard work and dedication, especially if you wish to get into CSE.

Which one should I choose, artificial intelligence in IIT Jodhpur or mechanical at IIT Guwahati?

AB
Aditi Banerjee Posted On : May 5th, 2023
Lives in Bangalore

Artificial Intelligence is a specialization that is expected to be in high demand in the near future and its scope is yet to be determined. I don’t think it’s safe to go for a newly launched field that too from a new IIT. The program and institution both lack the necessary credibility. I would recommend you go for a general branch at a new IIT, a specialization like AI from a well-reputed institute. There are many factors one should consider like faculty, subject content, etc before going for a new specialization.

Mechanical at IIT Guwahati on the other hand is a very safe choice considering the high credibility of the long-standing Institute.

What is the value of a PhD from IIT Delhi?

SG
Sushmita Gupta Posted On : April 5th, 2023
studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi

IIT Delhi Ph.D is considered valuable both academically and professionally. It portrays a high level of expertise and knowledge in a specific field of study. It also has a rich research culture and thus its Ph.D. degree holds quite a value

A Ph.D. degree from anywhere is just a means of opening more opportunities and its value is determined by how well you avail those opportunities and making the most out of them. Similarly, a Ph.D. from IIT Delhi surely opens numerous doors based on your area of research, research method, research advisor, and various other factors.

A well-known professor, Dr. Naveen Garg, CSE, completed his Ph.D. from IIT Delhi and is considered one of the smartest professors in the CSE department. He completed his B.Tech and Ph.D. in Computer Science from IIT Delhi, was a postdoctoral researcher at the Max-Planck-Institut fur Informatik, Germany, and became a professor at IIT Delhi in 1998. He largely contributed to the Design and analysis of approximation algorithms for NP-hard combinatorial optimization problems arising in network design, scheduling, routing, facility location, etc. Additionally, he is a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Science, Bangalore, and was awarded the SS Bhatnagar Award for Mathematical Sciences in 2016.

If he can make so much out of his Ph.D. anyone with the right mindset and determination can!

Why is the waitlist movement of IIM Trichy slow?

AM
Ayush Mishra Posted On : January 12th, 2023
MBA from Indian Institute of Management Raipur (Graduated 2021)

There are multiple reasons that cause the waitlist movement of IIM Trichy to slow down. Some include

  1.  A high number of buffer calls.
  2. The waitlist commitment fee ensures only interested candidates stay in the waitlist.
  3. Slower waitlist movement of older IIMs. This is because the Waitlist movement of IIM Trichy or that of any second-generation IIM depends on the waitlist movement of the top IIMs like A,B, l,C, K,L,I. Once their waitlist moves, the candidates vacant the seats from the newer IIMs resulting in their own waitlist movement.

So all you can do is wait for the top IIMs' waitlist movement.

Is it a good idea to leave galgotias after 1 year and go for iet Lucknow?

RS
Reshma Singh Posted On : August 2nd, 2021
Studies MCA at IET Lucknow 2022

Be more specific about your rank as it would help define the scenario better. But, in any case, you should know the various advantages of IET Lucknow over Galgotias. Some of them are as follows:

  1. The peer group at IET Lucknow is extremely better and they choose to be focused on every cause whatsoever.
  2. It is a government-run institute, which gives it an upper hand.
  3. There is the provision of a scholarship for complete waiver on the tuition fees for several backward students in the class. You might also secure your B.Tech degree completely free. Besides, it comes with amazing ROI.
  4. The faculty in every department is better than most other institutes around. Both permanent and visiting, in Mechanical engineering, Civil Engineering, and the CSE department are one of a kind.
  5. You will also have access to several coaching centers within a 2 KM radius, which is highly beneficial. Thus, you can prepare with liberty for as many exams as you want to take, like CAT, GATE, UPSC, GRE, and others.
  6. The placement drive has always been good. The visiting companies are Amazon, Adobe, TCS, Wipro, Sigma, LAVA international, Honda Cars, Analytics Quotient, Snapdeal, BSNL, Merchant Navy, Sterlite, Tata Chemicals, and more.

Other than the advantages, here are some of its demerits,

  1. The infrastructure of IET Lucknow is somewhat poor, as is found in many other government institutes.
  2. The administration can sometimes be extremely indifferent towards the requirements students usually have.
  3. The quality of pedagogy is rapidly deteriorating in most classes.

You can enroll at IET Lucknow only if you wish to pursue Mechanical Engineering, CSE, or Civil Engineering. In contrast, if you want to ace other important competitive exams, then you can research more about other institutes as well.
