Should other IITs also offer a B.Tech. in artificial intelligence like IIT Hyderabad?

IIT Hyderabad is considered to be one of the 2nd Generation IITs initiated by Govt. of India and shares strong links with IT and Industrial Hubs. It was ranked 8th for Engineering by NIRF 2020 and ranked 198th in Asia by QS World Rankings.

IIT Hyderabad is the first institute in India to offer a B.Tech program in Artificial Intelligence.

Artificial Intelligence at IITs:

To keep up with the increasing industry demands of proficient professionals in the field of Artificial Intelligence, many IITs offer diploma, certificate, and Ph.D. courses in AI.

  • IIT Roorkee has recently launched an Online Certification Artificial Intelligence Course in collaboration with Coursera whose duration is Six Months.

  • Two faculties from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay have worked closely with Great Learning to develop and launch a three-month deep learning certification program.

  • IIT Delhi has developed an AI system that will help medical practitioners use a low-powered electronic hardware system to diagnose health conditions such as malaria, TB, cervical cancer, and intestinal parasites in milliseconds.

  • In order to meet the growing demand for students, IIT-G has introduced a new MTech program in data science. IIT Madras also offers dual degree specializations in robotics and data science.

  • IIT Roorkee offers online certification courses in courses on emerging technologies like AI, machine learning, computer vision, etc.

However, IIT Hyderabad is the first institute to offer a B.Tech program in Artificial Intelligence and puts much emphasis on core areas such as Natural Language Processing, Game Theory, Reinforcement Learning, Multi-agent systems, Search, Planning, and Reasoning.

Admission:

  • Admission to the B.Tech AI program at IIT Hyderabad is done through scores obtained in the JEE Advanced Entrance Test.

  • According to the 2019 data, the required cutoff for securing a seat in AI at IIT Hyderabad is 657.

  • The BTech course fee at the institute is 2.23 lakhs per annum.

Placement:

  • Top recruiters at IIT Hyderabad include Accenture, Deshaw, Oracle, Microsoft, ISRO, L&T, MRF, Qualcomm, and Infosys.

  • The highest package offered was 53.79 LPA while the average salary was 16.74 LPA.

  • The overall percentage of placed students was 80%.

  • The placement season of 2019 saw an 80% surge in new international recruiters.

IIT Hyderabad is a 2nd Generation IITs which offers courses with smaller credits and has brilliant tie-ups with industry all around the globe. The recently launched Artificial Intelligence B.Tech program is high on demand.

How is the B.Tech in Artificial Intelligence course in IIT Hyderabad?

IIT Hyderabad is the first premier institute introducing Artificial Intelligence as an undergraduate course. The institute is ranked 8 for Engineering by NIRF 2020.

Admission:

  • The cut-off for AI in the first round is 434 and the second round is 623. Also, the cutoff rank for the program is Male: 478-657, Female: 1453-1601.

  • Students need to qualify for the JEE mains exam and get a good score in the JEE Advanced exam.

  • Eligibility criteria are 10+2 with 75% aggregate in the science stream.

The course structure of IITs is quite expensive. It includes mess, hostel, basic amenities for the hostel stayers. A different structure is maintained for the day borders. The BTech course fee is INR 2.23 lakhs per year.

Research:

Some of the recent research work in the field of AI at the institute include a Multi-space approach to zero-shot object detection, A little fog for a large turn, Quality Aware Generative Adversarial Networks.

Faculty:

  • Around 30 faculties are present in the AI department. All of them are highly experienced and have research interests in areas like Data Analytics and Machine Learning.

  • The faculties help students to apply the classroom concepts into the real world.

Placements:

The median salary received by the students is 12 LPA.

IIT Hyderabad has also announced the second cohort of the Professional Certification program in AI in collaboration with Talent Sprint. The course is valid for both college and young professionals. It is a six months program including a five-week boot-camp. Topics covered in the program include AI, IoT, Blockchain, and other quantum technologies.

Since it was introduced recently into the curriculum, it is predicted to be one of the fastest-growing technologies in the market. After some years AI professionals will outpace the software engineers. Seats are less in the IITs, students really need to work hard and secure their seat.
