Which branch is better to join, CSE at IIT Indore or MNC (mathematics and computing) at IIT Guwahati?

SD
Souvick Das Posted On : May 4th, 2023
Software Engineer at Microsoft

My brother was in a similar dilemma last year when he had to choose between MnC IIT Guwahati and CSE IIT Indore. Eventually, he went for IIT Indore CSE. The main reason he decided against going for the MnC program was his lack of interest in Math. And when we talk about Math at IIT, trust me when I say it’s at another level. It’s purely proof-based and high-level Math that can be handled only by true Math lovers. The academic workload is also high with 60% Math and 40% CS courses.

Now, here are a few points that might convince you to join IIT Indore instead

  • IIT Indore qualified for ACM-ICPC World Finals thrice. This in itself is quite an achievement considering this event's importance.
  • As per HackerRank, IIT Indore is said to have the best coders in the whole country. Additionally, it’s at the 8th position globally for the best coders
  • IIT Indore has an extensive alumni base who completed their Master's from top foreign universities like Stanford, Caltech, University of Columbia. Many talented alumni also increase the credibility of the institute by working at reputed firms like Google and Facebook.
  • This year, the CS department recorded 100% placements with the highest and average packages standing at INR 48.5 LPA and INR 30.32 LPA respectively.

Overall, IIT Indore CSE is a much better choice than MnC IIT Guwahati considering the work of and job opportunities.

Is there a difference between RGTU and RGPV?

AS
Ashish Sharma Posted On : October 21st, 2022
Research Intern (2020- present)

No, there is no difference between RGTU and RGPV.

RGPV stands for Rajiv Gandhi Proudyogiki Vishwavidyalaya. Almost all the private engineering colleges in the state of Madhya Pradesh are affiliated to this technical university.

RGTU stands for Rajiv Gandhi Technical University which is simply the English translation for RGPV.

There is however one college about which students get confused a lot. It is UIT or University Institute of Technology. It is an autonomous govt engineering college located inside the premises of the RGPV campus. The syllabus for UIT is the same as other RGPV colleges. The only difference is that their exams and results are announced by UIT itself.

Should I choose production and industrial engineering at NIT Kurukshetra and then try to change branch during internal sliding?

AR
Aditi Roy Posted On : September 2nd, 2023
lives in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India

I will not recommend you choose NIT Kurukshetra Production and Industrial Engineering because you will need a good rank for it and you can opt for CS at better colleges with that rank. Moreover, joining a college in the hope of solely upgrading your branch isn't a wise decision. The branch change procedure is more challenging than it seems. For branches like CS, you need a very high CGPA around 9.6+ which will be very tiring. Even after that, there isn't a guarantee for branch change as other factors like availability of seats and the demand of the branch are considered. You might get Mechanical with a lower CGPA around 9 though. I know a friend who went for Production and Industrial Engineering at NIT Kurukshetra and then changed his branch into mechanical engineering by securing a pointer of 9.0.

The point is this is a risky option and you cannot bet your 4 years on this. If you are good at dealing with failures and want to come out of your comfort zone to challenge yourself, then consider joining the branch and working for branch change. But if you feel you won't be able to handle the consequences then look for other options because the branch of Production and Industrial Engineering isn't very easy.

From which year are MNNIT Allahabad students given single-seater rooms?

AB
Anuva Bhowmik Posted On : November 30th, 2023
Studied at MNNIT Allahabad

The scenario of hostel room allotment is different for girls and boys at MNNIT.

Girl students do not get single seater rooms even in their B.Tech final year. Final year girls get two seater rooms.

Now as for boys,

  1. Freshers are allotted Swami Vivekananda Hostel, and each room contains 3 people. It is a newly constructed 7 floor hostel building. The rooms are nice, except for the lack of LAN connection and below average mess food. The in-time is 8:30 pm.
  2. During the second year, one has a choice. Either one can choose the senior hostel complexes- Patel Hostel / Tilak Hostel, or opt for Tagore Hostel. The earlier two have 2 seater rooms, while Tagore is 4 seater. Tagore Hostel is exclusively made for second year students, and it is spacious. But it is far from the college campus, so one has to walk a lot for the whole year. Patel and Tilak are old hostels, and inhabited by senior students as well.
  3. In third year, one gets a hostel from among the four senior hostels- Patel, Tilak, Tandon and Malviya. The rooms are two seaters, but there is a single LAN port in the rooms, so wifi sharing is predominant.
  4. During fourth year, one is allotted a hostel among the four senior hostels. But as a final year student, one gets a single room.

This is the complete detail regarding room allotment for hostellers at MNNIT Allahabad.

PG
Pritha Ganguli Posted On : December 22nd, 2021
studied at Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology (2020)

OUAT (Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology) is a Technical University. Anybody interested in research in any discipline can go for a master degree in their area of interest.

There is huge scope for Research leading to PhD in OUAT in all departments of Agriculture, Veterinary, Fishery, Forestry, Agricultural Engineering, etc. Among all the branches OUAT is popular for B.Sc. Agriculture and Bachelors in Veterinary Science.

The 3 things that OUAT deals with are research, education and extension. To get into the research section you have to complete your graduation followed by your post graduation. After that you can apply for ARS or continue doing PhD and can apply for university vacancy.

You can get some advice from the seniors and even visit the college and see the ambience and their functioning for yourself. Research is a field that requires a lot of patience and perseverance, so choose after knowing every aspect of it.

Is NITIE Mumbai a good option for a female student with a 65 aggregate in a B.E.?

PP
Priyank Patil Posted On : August 16th, 2021
PGDIM from National Institute of Industrial Engineering (2019)

As one of my friends studied at NITIE Mumbai, I can say that the percentage of female students is lower than the male students. Well, the scenario is the same in almost all the Business Schools.

  • Be it the top 15 Business schools, among the total strength of 240, the female students are around 20-25 only.
  • Well, sometimes there has been a case where female students, being less in number, have a good chance to get hired from the companies visiting the college.
  • Moreover, girls like any other student also have to work hard enough to score well and get placed.
  • They, though, get the benefit as they do not comprise the majority among all B-schools.
  • A student should have scored around 65% to fulfill the eligibility for filling the forms for on-campus placements.
  • Besides this, one shouldn’t worry or be proud of scoring less or more marks, respectively, as the companies don’t seek only academics but also personality.

Thus, don’t be sad with your academic scores, just prepare yourself and work hard with dedication and confidence.

How strict is attendance policy at IIIT Hyderabad?

SG
Shubham Gaur Posted On : August 2nd, 2023
CS undergrad, IIIT Hyderabad

The attendance policy at IIIT Hyderabad is pretty strict indeed. The institute has a 100% attendance policy in all courses. Whether this includes lab sessions and tutorials is decided by the concerned faculty. The minimum attendance required is >= 85%. The penalties for breaking the attendance rules are as follows.

  • 75% to 85%: Grade is reduced by 1
  • 65% to 75%: Grade is reduced by 2.
  • 0% to 65%: Grade is changed to ‘F’ which is Fail.

It’s important to note that IIIT Hyderabad being a private institute has strict attendance rules not just for the sake of it. The matter is taken seriously and proxy attendance for friends is impossible here. Students get a grade drop even if they skip

You can also opt for the RSAO or the  Responsible Student Attendance Option. Through this you are free from attendance compulsion provided that you get a grade above ‘B’.

Do verified certifications from edX (IIMBx -IIM Bangalore in my case) add brownie points to one's resume?

AS
Aravind Sethuraj Posted On : December 21st, 2022
MBA in Business, Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (Graduated 2019)

The simple answer is yes, verified certificates from edX do add value to your resume. But the point is that only adding value to your resume is not sufficient. You should broaden your approach and consider this certification more than just adding value. Use it to inculcate skills that will help you in this fast-paced world. If you do this certification wholw_heartedly you will gain confidence to present yourself for the interview and also give the impression that you are constantly working towards improving yourself.

So the certificate itself won't be much beneficial in the long run but the skills acquired from it will.

  • The university offers a dual specialisation in the following courses: Marketing, Finance, Human Resource, Systems and Operations.
  • The placements are also fairly good. Anyone who has scored above average marks gets placed easily. Highest CTC offered was INR 36 LPA whereas Average CTC offered was INR 7 LPA. Some major companies that visit the campus for recruitment include Cisco, DE Shaw, Ola, Samsung, Tiger Analytics.

Besides whether s university is good or bad depends more on your soft skills like communication skills and determination.
