Is the NICMAR entrance exam difficult? How many applicants are there every year?

SR
Siddharth Roy Posted On : September 24th, 2021
Studied at National Institute of Construction Management and Research (2018)

Usually, the NICMAR entrance exam is very simple. The questions in the exam are from various subjects like aptitude, data interpretation, verbal ability, and general awareness, and the maximum mark of the exam is 150 marks. You can easily prepare for the exam by referring to R.S. Aggarwal. Then the interview takes place in which the interviewer can ask anything including things about yourself, the subject you like, and your work experience if any, that consists of 50 marks.

Now coming to the total number of applicants, mostly it is seen that around 8,000 to 10,000 students apply for the NICMAR entrance exam every year across the country.

Why are colleges such as BIT SINDRI, VJTI MUMBAI and HBTI KANPUR underrated?

MB
Mayukh Bose Posted On : May 5th, 2021
Studied at B.Tech from Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (2021)

I have quite a few friends at VJIT Mumbai, so I can speak for the institute. After IITs, it is quite reputed among students. People from outside of Maharashtra may not be aware of VJIT but inside the state being a student of VJIT is a matter of pride.

If we make a comparison of engineering colleges nationwide, it will be IITs from tier-1, followed by few NITs, and after that colleges such as VJIT for the following tier.

VJIT is an old institute with a huge brand value. Many reputed MNCs visit the campus for the placement drive. It is less recognized but ‘underrated’ is probably is the wrong word to describe it.

The following factors are the reasons who most people are not familiar with the institute.

  • It is a state college, that limits its appeal to a great extent. Students, parents, and media all alike give far more important to national colleges/institutions by default.
  • As students outside of the state of the institute do not know about the college, they do not apply and thus the diversity is heavily skewed.

So, VJIT may not have national recognition but it is quite reputed inside Maharashtra.

How is mess food at NIT Kurukshetra?

KB
Kritika Banerjee Posted On : September 1st, 2023
MCA from National Institute of Technology, Kurukshetra

NIT Kurukshetra girls hostel messes serve good food. As a North Indian, I find the meals quite satisfactory.

Students from the South may find some difficulty in adjusting to the taste. Non vegetarians are also displeased because the mess only serves vegetarian dishes.

The menu is decided by 6 students of a mess committee. They try to include a variety of dishes, keeping in mind the diversity. The menu is repeated weekly.

During winters, the breakfast mostly comprises Paratha. Potatoes are always included in the dinner, and the chapatis have excessive flour. Except for these few things, I don’t have much to complain about the mess food.

Now the good parts- The food is fresh, healthy and hygienic. Your meals will include lentils, vegetables and milk products. You’ll be served dessert at dinner almost each day. Dessert can be Ice-cream (generally 2 days a week), Custard, Kheer or Gulab Jamun. For breakfast you’ll get one thing or the other among these- Paratha, Sandwich, Pav bhaji, Poha and the like. Lunch and Dinner are nice and simple. You can get Dosa for dinner. If there's a meal that the students don’t like, the mess committee changes it.

The mess food is overall nice at NIT Kurukshetra girls hostel. You’ll get used to the taste and start liking it after a while.

Sabeer Chalana Posted On : December 26th, 2023

Here are some things you must know before joining BITS Hyderabad-

  1. Even though you’ve secured a seat at a prestigious institution, it does not mean that the coming four years will be any easier. You’ll have to study with diligence to secure a good score, and consequently, a good placement.
  2. Despite what others tell you, your CGPA will play an important role in placements. So maintain a good CGPA throughout.
  3. If you’ll carry a laptop from the first year itself, make sure to use it for studies as well. Do not waste all your time on online gaming and other things.
  4. You’ll meet many new people on campus, make good networks and socialize. This will benefit you in the long run.
  5. Join some clubs and societies if you like, they will enhance your campus life.
  6. There is a 0 attendance policy, but try to be a bit regular. This is because certain class tests are important for your CGPA, and also, regularly attending the classes is good for a disciplined routine.
  7. The campus has all the necessary items, so if you forget to bring some minor things, you can always buy them over there.
  8. Remember to pack your original certificates, plenty of Xerox copies of them and passport size photos.

Anyone who claims that AI is still a developing field and hasn’t made its mark yet hasn’t looked up the AI and Machine Learning courses offered by top foreign universities. These courses are well in demand and offer extensive knowledge in the field of AI.

As for the IISc Bangalore AI MTech program, although it's a new program, it’s fast gaining popularity and is becoming one of the most coveted courses offered by IISc Bangalore. Which one is better, IIT Ropar or Thapar University?

TA
Tithi Aggrawal Posted On : July 27th, 2023
Lives in New Delhi

It’s beyond my understanding why you would consider joining Thapar University when you have such a good option of IIT Ropar to choose from. I can say with certainty that IIT Ropar is a much better choice than Thapar University. IIT Ropar is considered among the top 3 IITs among the ones that are newly established,

  • IIT Ropar has a high cutoff and accepts only the top JEE rankers so the quality of the crowd is not compensated. Thapar does not attract a very good crowd and has many average students as well thus bringing down the quality of the institute.
  • Addressing the elephant in the room, even the placement scenario at IIT Ropar is better than Thapar University. Thapar University's average package 2022 stood at INR 10.97 LPA while IIT Ropar's average package 2022 stood at INR 28.54 LPA.
  • IIT  Ropar is well-known for its cutting-edge research and has a top-notch research facility. It also has many  MoUs and ties with foreign universities and organizations.
  • The exposure offered here is great and every year many students go for internships, jobs, and studies in foreign universities.
  • The faculty pool comprises highly experienced professors that are Ph.D. holders from top overseas universities.

Overall, IIT Ropar is definitely better than Thapar University and you shouldn’t have any second thoughts.

Does a two-year gap after graduation hinder admission to a top B-school (IIM, XLRI and FMS)?

SC
Shreya Chaturvedi Posted On : May 27th, 2021
MBA from Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (2021)

You do not have to worry about that because not only my elder brother, but a number of other seniors and alumni of these Institutes had gap years. They were building a startup, or preparing for Civil Services, or even trying new skills. Let us check the selection process of these top business schools -

  • The selection criteria are based on two levels- the first is by compiling the marks of 10+2, graduation, and CAT.
  • The work experience is turned into a score too, along with professional certificates, higher education, academic and gender diversity.
  • IIMs in particular follow this criterion and give the CAT exam a very high weightage.
  • You can strengthen your profile by building skills or working on projects or a startup.
  • The final step includes the WAT(Written Ability Test) and PI (Personal Interview).

The scores of these are combined and finally, during the interview, you will be asked about your gap years.

It is up to you how you can connect your gap story with your future goals. The MBA program is full of talented aspirants and the panelists select only those who can utilize the subject wisely and make it work for their goals. Gap years will be considered advantageous to your profile if something unique comes out of it.

What are some helpful tips for students starting their first year at NSIT?

TD
Tezal Dahiya Posted On : August 23rd, 2023

As a senior student at NSIT Delhi, here are my tips for freshers-

  1. Maintain a decent attendance, at least fulfill the minimum requirement.
  2. DO NOT bring chits or electronic calculators to the exam hall. During every exam, there is a visit by the Examination Authorities. If you are caught with any kind of cheating material, you will receive a backlog. You can’t reason with them after being caught.
  3. Do work in NSUT Delhi fests at least once. The seniors come around asking for volunteers. This is a good opportunity to get acquainted with your seniors and peers.
  4. Make good connections with your seniors. They will help you with everything, like -Which companies visit the campus for placements, How much percentage to maintain, Which teacher to go to after seeking help, etc.
  5. Some teachers are known for marking papers randomly, regardless of what you write.
  6. For a tech job in the IT industry, choose between Development and Competitive coding and get into one of these with seriousness during your second or third year. But if you don’t want expertise in either and simply wish for a job, maintain a good percentage and study algorithms from GFG or wherever you deem fit.
  7. Join college societies at NSUT Delhi to connect with your seniors.
  8. For good food options, go to Dwarka Sector-12 Food Court. You can also go to the in-house Mccain and JC.
  9. Maintain a good percentage. 75%+ will allow you to sit for all the companies during campus placements.
  10. Do take the hostel even if you are a local student. This will help you during the exam season.

Other than this, I would suggest you make the most out of your time at NSUT Delhi as this is an amazing place.
