Professor Emeritus at NIIT University, Prof. Sugata Mitra conferred Outstanding Achievement in Education Award at Global Teachers Conference Edufuturist 2022, UK

Date: July 06, 2022

Prof. Sugata Mitra, Professor Emeritus at NIIT University, has been conferred with the prestigious Outstanding Achievement in Education Award at the 4th Annual Global Teachers Conference - Edufuturists 2022, UK on 30th June. The global Edufuturist awards were instated in 2019 to celebrate innovative institutions and educators, who have been path-breakers in the world of education. Teachers from around the world gathered online for the awards held virtually this year, to acknowledge those who are making the future of education a reality.

The Outstanding Achievement in Education Award highlights Prof. Mitra’s pioneering efforts in shaping educational models. In 1999, as the Chief Scientist at NIIT Limited, Prof. Mitra conducted the ‘Hole-in-the-Wall’ experiment by placing a computer in the wall of a Delhi slum. Children were allowed free access as the experiment aimed to show that they could be taught computers easily without any training.

Recounting his journey, while receiving the Outstanding Achievement in Education Award, Prof. Sugata MitraProf. Emeritus, NIIT University said, “I don’t have a formal background in education. I am a physicist. However, I had an idea that could transform education. As early as 1982, I have been toying with the idea of using computers for unsupervised learning. Finally, in 1999, I got a chance to test my idea by carving a hole in the wall of the NIIT premises adjoining a slum in Kalkaji in New Delhi. A computer was placed in the hole that was accessible to all. Thus, ‘Hole-in-the-Wall’ came into being.”

“A project that created a self-organized learning environment for children is going strong in India and Africa. Implemented by NIIT Foundation in India the project reaches out to millions of children across the country.”

This ‘Minimally Invasive Education’ (MIE) model inspired many around the world. Author Vikas Swaroop’s bestseller, Slumdog Millionaire, which was later adapted into a film that won the Oscar, was inspired by the Hole-in-the-Wall experiment.

PhD in Solid State Physics from IIT Delhi, Prof Sugata Mitra is a prolific researcher responsible for more than 25 inventions in the fields of cognitive science and educational technology. He has been named the ‘Global Education Superstar’ by The Times. He is also the recipient of the prestigious million dollar 2013 TED Prize, wherein he shared his vision to ‘Build a School in the Cloud’ that encourages self-learning. A gamechanger, innovator, and inspiration for pushing the boundaries in education, Prof Mitra has pioneered the SOLE (Self-Organized Learning Environment) program.

Admission are also open for the 4 new programmes introduced at NU - B.Tech in Communication and Computer Engineering, B.Tech in Data Science, B.Tech in Cyber Security, and Bachelors in Business Administration. The AIP also resonates with the recent decision of CBSE of taking class 10th score into account while evaluating the 12th standard students.

The AIP is a two-way interaction process that examines the overall personality of the student rather than only their academic records. AIP consists of three parts: A questionnaire, a test based on class 12 subjects and Personal Counselling Interaction. Students can get admission basis their 10th class score and personal interaction from the comfort of their home. In order to fill the NIIT University application form and apply for the exam, candidates will have to first register themselves on the NU website.

Prof. Parimal Mandke, Acting President, NIIT University said, “The pandemic has proved to be a black-swan event that has drastically changed the future of education. While these are difficult times, it also provides us with an opportunity to re-evaluate our education models. Technology has been one of the pillars of NU and we quickly shifted to a digital model to ensure academic continuity as the pandemic hit us. We have been enabling admissions through the AIP since our inception and this year we will go the extra mile to address any concerns that students of their parents may have.”

Conceptualized as an institution of excellence, NU provides exceptional education based on the Four Core Principles that make learning Industry-linked, Technology-based, Research-driven and Seamless. 83.5% of NIIT University parents feel that a residential institution offers greater safety

Date: January 21, 2021

In a first of its kind survey done by NIIT University (NU), parents of the students have given a unanimous thumbs up to reopening the University. The survey was administered to all parents of students currently studying at NIIT University (NU). The questionnaire, mailed to parents, elicited close to 250 responses.

Other key feedback received included the following:

  • 89.1% of parents felt that the University should use access cards instead of allowing thumbprint access

  • 35.1% felt that the washroom areas should be sanitized at least 5 times a day; 31.7% felt that the University should sanitize these areas more than 5 times a day

  • A majority of the parents (55%) felt that the University should not issue out passes for students till the situation is completely safe. They also felt that members of the faculty and staff should also be restricted from moving in and out of campus

  • 92.3% of the parents felt that the University should, in addition to asking for a valid COVID 19 negative test while entering, conduct an additional COVID negative test after a few days after students had come into campus

  • A clear majority of parents (68.1%) also felt that entry by a student into another student’s room should be prohibited in the interest of social distancing

  • The University should offer multiple food choices, and not allow outside food to be ordered in

  • Seating for the students in the cafeteria and in the classrooms should be fixed

  • Sports activities could be started once students are back and after passage of time, provided no cases are discovered

It may be noted that NU had already decided on the above measures and there was a detailed COVID related safety protocol already in place, including a film which is hosted on the NU website. The question of re-opening of residential educational institutions is one where the state governments have to do an audit to gauge the safety standards put into place by the institution.

The Govt of Rajasthan has conducted this audit and the University is expected to open shortly, with students returning in a phased manner. This research was specifically conducted among parents to ensure that the safety protocols being implemented at the University meet parents’ expectations and to take any additional steps required to ensure that the parents and students are fully satisfied vis-à-vis their safety on Campus. Admissions for the next year’s academic cycle are already open for all the courses being offered.
