Dr. Manoj Verghese is currently working as Head, Department of Management Studies at Rungta College of Engineering and Technology, Bhilai. Having 22 years of teaching experience in various national level institutions, he has guided several Ph.D. and research scholars as well. Along with serving as Member, Board of Studies of Management at various institutes and editorial board of two National Level Research Journals, he is a professional member of academic associations like IAAP (International Association to Applied Psychology), AIMA (All India Management Association).

What are your roles and responsibilities as the Head of the department?

“Exercise leadership, demonstrate vision and empower others”

The prime role, as the Head of the Department of Management Studies, is to provide strong academic leadership. I am required to lead, manage and develop the department to ensure it achieves the highest possible standards of excellence in all its activities. I am required to promote and represent the Institute and Department, both internally and externally. It is my prime responsibility and accountability, as HOD, for setting and advancing the academic strategy of the department in line with Institutes and University strategic plan and direction. I have to ensure the best possible experience to the students in regards to curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. In regards to research, it is my responsibility as HOD to create a dynamic and forward-looking research environment for both staff and students. Also, to ensure high quality, integrity and ethics in the research work undertaken in the department.


How do you strategize the curriculum to make it befitting for the students?

“Regular upgradation and implementation of improved academic activities”

The curriculum is regularly updated by the University itself. The academic calendar of every semester is designed by the university, and accordingly the institute prepares academic strategies for effective implementation of the curriculum prescribed by CSVTU in consultation with various Heads of Departments. The inputs received from IQAC are also incorporated in, at the time of preparing the academic calendar. The institution develops action plans for effective conduction of teaching learning process, which helps in guiding faculties in correct planning and management of classes in accordance with the academic calendar. Regular departmental meetings are held with faculties, student class representatives, which helps in taking suitable measures for effective implementation of academia. The feedback received from stakeholders are collected and suggestions of stakeholders are used for improvement in the continuous teaching learning process. Skill enhancement and value-added certificate courses along with guest lecturer, workshops and seminars are regularly conducted to bridge the gap of academic learning in line with the expectation of the stakeholders.

“Dual-degree program and applied electives for wider aspects”

Department of Management Studies at RCET, Bhilai offers MBA and PhD programs. MBA program is a dual specialisation program with specialisation offered in Marketing, Finance, Human Resource, Systems and Production. Students can choose any two specialisations among the five offered. Along with the two specialisations, students can also choose any one of the applied electives in the final semester from Hospital/Health Care Management, Travel and Tourism, Transport and Logistics, Insurance, Banking, Management of SME & Family Business, Media Management, Events Management, Corporate Communications and Sports Management. The department also offers advanced skill enhancement and value-added certificate courses to help students gain knowledge and professional touch of subjects.

What approaches do you bring in, apart from curriculum, to train the students?

“Frequent practical training sessions and events to enhance skills”

The institute conducts international conferences, HR Conclave, online video lectures of eminent professors from the industrial world. Workshops, Guest Lectures are also being conducted for students to bridge the gap between academia and industry. Industrial visits are organized by the institute to make students aware about the practical knowledge in detail. Students are prepared to do a compulsory Internship to get exposure to the professional world. Various industrial experts also visit the campus to explain the concepts and impart practical learning. To improve communication skills and public speaking skills of the students, the institute has an English literary club (Carpediem) as well as an active Toastmasters Club. 


What are the factors that make the program best for the students to opt?

We offer dynamic approaches in learning and practising real-life studies. The curriculum is in accordance with the industry expectation, where regular interaction with industry experts is provided. Wide range of pedagogy is used including Case study, GD, Role Play, and Simulations, etc. We have a strong industry linkage for internships as well. Our department primarily focuses on inculcating and inspiring the entrepreneurship potential of the students. Moreover, The Rungta group has collaborated with Harvard Business School online to provide world class Certification programs. Also, seminars, guest lectures and industrial visits are conducted on a regular basis. 


How do you make your students industry ready?

“Conducting industry-based activities and programs”

We have a strong Industry-Institution Connect, which helps us to regularly conduct HR conclaves and visits of the industry experts in our campus. These industry experts give feedback in regards to the industry expectations and developments. Based on the feedback, we do regular upgradation of our curriculum through short term certificate courses, workshops, seminars, guest lectures, internships and live projects. The faculty members use case study-based teaching to make the teaching learning process more practical oriented. We possess a good alumni network, and an active and functional incubation cell in the campus as well to motivate students to develop their own start-ups. 


How does the MBA department of RCET enhance the skills of the faculty?

“A conducive environment for research, publication and academic advancements”

The faculty members are the backbone of any academic institution. The department and institution take various measures to equip the faculty members and also to upgrade their skill to meet the industry standards. Motivational schemes, both financial and non-financial, are announced in the department and institution to motivate faculty members to enhance the quality of research and publications. Faculty members undertake projects, consultancy and training programs thereby enhancing their skills and expertise as well as generating revenue for the departments. Also, the faculty members are encouraged to participate in various seminars and conferences organised by institutions of national repute. They are motivated to upgrade their academic qualifications, and keep updating their knowledge and learning curve by enrolling themselves in relevant courses and academic programs.

What plans are you currently designing for the MBA Department, RCET?

“More initiatives and thrust focused on enhancing the quality”

The Department of Management Studies at RCET, Bhilai has always focused on the holistic development of the students so that the students have a successful professional career. We will keep the process of providing the updated and industry-oriented curriculum to the students and will imbibe a more innovative teaching learning process in accordance with the requirement of the time. It has always given thrust in equipping and developing the skills of the faculty members as well, so that they can match the industry standards. The quality of research publication, projects and consultancy will be increased to benefit students, and the Industry Institution Linkage would be strengthened with more advanced internships, live projects, placement etc. Also, from the past few years, we have started inspiring and igniting the entrepreneurial skills of the students with an active E-Cell as well as an Incubation Cell that identifies the brightest ideas, and gives them a platform and converts them into reality. In the coming days the department and institute endeavour is to create a better start-up ecosystem, so that it will lead to sustainable and successful world class ventures.
