Dr. Jagdev Singh has been working as a Professor and Dean Consultancy & Industry Linkage at Sardar Beant Singh State University, Gurdaspur, Punjab. He has done BE and ME in Mechanical Engineering from Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College and PhD from Punjab Technical University as part of his academics. He started his career as a Lecturer of Mechanical Engineering in 1988 and later worked as an Assistant Executive Engineer, Assistant Professor and Associate Professor in various prestigious institutions. He has a rich 35+ years of experience in the education sector and his areas of are Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, Fuzzy Modeling of Engineering Systems, Fuzzy control and Cryogenic. Also, he has published 69 research papers in international journals and 43 research papers in national journals. He is a member of Fellow Institution of Engineers and Institution of Engineers along with Life Member of Indian Society for Technical Education, New Delhi. And during his tenure in the education sector, he has attended various kinds of workshops, seminars and short term courses to keep himself updated with the latest happenings of the outside world. Apart from this, he is a Reviewer to the International Journal of Applied Thermal Engineering, Ain Shams Engineering Journal, International Journal of Refrigeration, Journal of Process Control, Elsevier of USA, International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology of Springer, Acta Physica Polonica-A (APPA), Indian Journal of Engineering & Materials Sciences - New Delhi and has received Best Research Paper Award (The N K Iyengar Memorial Prize) by The Institution of Engineers, India. He has guided 6 PhD and 19 M. Tech students for their projects.

What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education sector?

In my opinion, one of the greatest and most virtuous services we can provide to humanity is to educate the young generation of our society. And it gives me immense happiness and satisfaction when I guide my students for appropriate professional opportunities in accordance with their skills and interests and expectations of the industry and society. So I believe all these factors together have helped me to stay connected with the education sector.


What is your philosophy of leadership?

I firmly believe that the truest kind of leadership is the one where a leader knows how to make best use of available resources and people to meet the end goals of an institution and to empower them throughout the process. In addition to this, making a team competent so that everyone can face future challenges confidently and patiently is also the responsibility of the person who leads them.


In your opinion, how does the personality of a student play a major role in his/her success?

While academic advancement is crucial, we firmly believe that a unique and well-rounded personality is must for students to stand out in the crowd. And a good personality along with amazing communication skills is a necessity in today’s times as it instills confidence in students to face the world. And since we are committed to the overall development and growth of our students, hence our faculty members always help students to improve their soft and hard communication skills and also provide them appropriate opportunities to utilize their classroom learning to solve real world issues.

How do you build a strong connection between your institute courses and industry requirements?

Our college regularly conducts industry-connected sessions and expert lectures in collaboration with corporate people to educate students about the latest industrial practices, trends, developments and expectations. And this direct interaction helps students to understand in which areas they need to put more effort to become a technically proficient individual and world class professionals. Apart from this, our courses have the ability to transform individuals into such professionals who can contribute effectively towards the success of an organization.


What do you see as your college’s greatest strengths?

The main pillars of our college's strength is our entrepreneurial, collaborative and growth mindset along with our management and leadership who are always there to support us. Along with this, open-mindedness, planning skills, socializing and enthusiastic behavior and strong work ethics of our students, Faculties and staff members makes us strong. Lastly, community service programs which we regularly organize and high enrollment of reserved category students in our college with a good female student’s ratio adds to our strength and makes us resilient over time.


Any suggestions which you would like to give to the current youth and aspiring students?

I would like to advise my dear students to make themselves a priority and keep upgrading their skills. Also consider all four dimensions of life while hustling and educating yourself and be physically, spiritually and intellectually strong and socially responsible. Also, live your life to the fullest and stay disciplined and focused towards your goals.

How do you establish a healthy relationship and environment in your institute?

For the purpose of establishing a healthy relationship with everyone, I regularly interact with them through a trustworthy and open communication channel and by setting healthy rules and a disciplined environment. In addition to this, I am always open to any kind of positive or negative feedback coming from my students or fellow faculties because I believe that's how I can improve myself, my teaching techniques and ways of working. Last but not the least, I ensure college's ambiance remains positive for them so that they can share their worries and issues without any hesitation and I also offer equal learning opportunities to my dear students so that they know each one of them are equally important for me and they have my support always.
