XLRI FAQs

Ques. Can I stand a chance for XLRI admission, even if I don’t meet the minimum XAT cut off requirement?

Ans. No. Qualifying in XAT is the minimum requirement to be eligible for XLRI admission. Applicants who do not meet the minimum XAT cut off are not shortlisted for the subsequent group discussion and personal interview rounds

Ques. How much minimum percentile is required for getting shortlisted for XLRI?.

Ans. You are required to score a minimum 96 percentile and above in XAT to get a call for BM and 94 percentile and above for HRM at XLRI Jamshedpur. Besides, you also need to clear sectional cut-offs in the entrance test to participate in the further rounds.

Ques. Is XAT more difficult than CAT to qualify for XLRI?

Ans. Compared with the two, CAT does not include Decision Making (DM) section and GK section but XAT exam has DM and GK as separate sections. Another major difference is the difficulty level between the two exams. XAT is said to be a bit more difficult than the CAT exam.

Ques. What is the pattern of the XAT exam for getting into XLRI?

Ans. XAT exam has 75 total questions divided in three sections. Out of 75 marks, candidates may find it difficult to score beyond 30-32 marks and very few candidates cross the 34-35 score in XAT exam. The difficulty level together with a reduced number of questions deliver a high percentile at even low scores in XAT exam.

Ques. Does XLRI give weightage to academics for its admission shortlist?

Ans. If you possess an excellent academic score with 85+% marks right from class 10th onwards and have 2-3 years of relevant work experience, XLRI will offer you an edge with 5% weightage points in GD PI rounds.

What are the chances of a fresher to get selected in FMS, XLRI, MDI with less than 60% in 12th?

Sandip Pal
Abhirup ChatterjeePGDM in Human Resources, Xavier School of Management

It will be difficult to get into colleges such as FMS, XLRI, and MDI with less than 60% in 12th. But it’s achievable. FMS assigns 10% weight to 10+2 scores. So, if you manage to score around the 99.5 percentile in CAT, you will have a chance of getting shortlisted. You need to perform well in the GD-PI round as well. XLRI and MDI assign 15% weight to past academics and work experience.

So, try to work on your profile by adding extra-curricular activities. Also, prepare well for entrance tests and the GD-PI round.

What percentage of questions does one need to answer to clear XAT and get admission in XLRI or XIMB?

Priyanka GhoshStudied at Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar (2019)

There is no definite percentage of questions you need to clear in order to secure yourself a seat in XLRI or XIMB. The obvious answer is every year the question paper difficulty level varies and so does the percentile cutoff.

Simply, your chances of getting a seat in both these institutes purely depend on your percentile just like JEE-Main rank is the criteria for national-level institutes.

My friend took admission in XIMB in 2018, the scores of their batch were between 56.5 to 89 out of 150. Here the person scoring has 100% percentile whereas the person getting 88.5 will be close to 99% percentile. Hence, the percentile cutoff varies each year.

For example, for admissions in 2019, the percentile cutoff was:

  • XLRI Jamshedpur: BM – 91.25, HR – 88 (With Sectional Cutoffs)
  • XIM Bhubaneswar: 94 (With sectional Cutoffs)

Here are few tips to secure a high percentile in these exams:

  • Focus on the accuracy of your answer. Do not just beat around the bush or select an answer which doesn’t hit the accuracy.
  • Try to solve at least 60% of the total questions. For the rest, you can solve the ones you know properly.
  • Always aim for the highest mark, you never know if you are the one having a 100% percentile.

Therefore, thinking about percentile cutoff is in vain until the results are out. As the cutoff will totally depend on your performance, it is best recommended to focus on your performance in the exam. After all, your success depends on your hard work and fervour towards your goal.

What percentile do I need to get into XLRI with poor academics (10th- 7.2 CGPA 12th- 62% graduation- 49.33%) and no work experience?

XLRI, the dream destination for many, might seem difficult to crack, especially if you haven't had a perfect academic record. But here's the exciting part – XLRI examines every aspects of applicants. They look beyond just your grades or XAT percentile. It's challenging, yes, but not impossible! Every year, numerous top students in India aspire to get into XLRI. • You must have at least 5 years of professional experience in roles such as manager, teacher, or executive on a full-time basis.

XAT cutoff is the only criteria for GD and PI calls. I would advise you to search for more business schools. If you have any other abilities or accomplishments, such as in athletics or any other extracurricular activity, you may still be able to get into XLRI despite having a poor academic score. You still have time to apply to XLRI.

Can a 96 percentile in the CAT get admitted in XLRI or any IIMs?

Sandip Pal
Rashi ShahiMBA from Xavier School of Management (2018)

For XLRI, you will have to appear in XAT. As for IIMs, the selection for admission varies depending on which category you belong to.

  • General Category Male Engineers (GEM): You are most likely to get calls from the new IIMs. It is more or less the same for GEF except for the gender diversity points.
  • General Category Non-Engineers: If you are from Arts background, expect a call from IIM A, B, C, even if you have only above 80% in 10/12/Undergrad. If you are a Commerce student you can expect a call from IIM I/K/S apart from the new IIMs.
  • OBC/NCL Category: As the sectional cutoff is lower, you can expect a call from all IIMs except ABC if you are an engineer. Female and non-engineering students will have gender/academic diversity advantages.
  • SC/ST Category: The required cutoff is fairly low for these two categories. But you will need decent past academics (at least 80%) to be eligible for top IIMs.

But these are only the minimum requirements to get a call for WAT-PI at these institutes. To be selected for admission, you will need to perform well in the WAT-PI round too as the competition will be fierce.

What is the minimum percentile that a Non-Christian should have to get into XLRI for MBA through XAT?

Arbaz ShaikhStudied at Xavier School of Management (2010)

XLRI doesn't have any kind of religion-based cut-off nor any reservation on caste-based. As XLRI is one of the most reputed colleges in India, the percentile required for non-christian is the same as for a Christian candidate.

Cut-off depends totally on the performance you have done in your exam. Above 90% is required to appear in GD and PI and after that, you get your seat. No institute has based cut-off based on religion, castes in the world.

In the Indian education system, no one can bias on the behalf of any caste, religion, sex, it all depends on your performance and your outcome will tell your future. Don't think about anything just focus on your studies make a strategy and implement it if you want to crack your exam.

Can I get into XLRI PGDM - GM with a GMAT score of 660 and with a work ex of 6+ years?

Shibani TagoreStudied at Xavier School of Management

My cousin is in XLRI's PGDM program and he told me that his work experience in China helped him a lot as they value international experience. If you've volunteered with NGOs or did any form of social service in the past, then that'll definitely count.

Overall, a strong application with some essays and recommendation letters will raise your chances of admission. You should be able to prove to them that what you do is extraordinary, that you are a natural leader. Once you've prepared your application, get a grammar check done by your friends with good English language skills. Keep working on your application.

  • Substantiate your essays and videos with interesting anecdotes and highlight the accolades you have achieved in your career.
  • Try to retake the GMAT exam and score 700 to be in the safe spot.
  • Focus on your interview with these questions in mind- why MBA? What do you want to do after your MBA? Highlight your pre and post-MBA plans.

XLRI will regard you highly if you are aware of India’s socio-economic issues and form your answers from an inclusive point of social welfare.

Be updated on the deadlines. Wait for the list to come out. Submit the essays and video. I am sure you'll get a call for GD and a personal interview. The difficulty arises from this point and you'll be expected to have prepared extremely well for the interview.

What is the usual percentile range scored by the last admit in the HRM program of XLRI, Jamshedpur?

Sapna Malik updated
Indrani ChatterjeePGDM from Xavier School of Management (2018)

For the Human Resource Management program, the overall cut-off for male engineering applicants is 93 percentile, while it is 91 percentile for female engineering students.

Male applicants with non-engineering backgrounds must have a 90 percentile, while female applicants with non-engineering backgrounds must have an 88 percentile. It's possible that even with a high percentile, you might not be chosen if you have a poor interview performance.

While it's helpful to have some sense of scale, I'd advise shooting for the stars and ignoring percentiles for the time being.
