Supriya Review at Wilfrid Laurier University [LAURIER], Waterloo | Collegedunia

My experience as an international student

S
6.3 /10

Because it had a small campus and a community feel. I enjoyed the feel of the campus when I was researching it. Additionally, this was one of the few universities in Canada where they did offer a co-op program to art students.

Course Curriculum :

I really enjoy some of the courses I am enrolled in. In Particular, I really enjoy all the digital media classes as it combines education with technology and helps me learn better. I also find it really interesting that online classes have great engagement.

Exams :

In order to prepare for this, I took the SAT and the TOEFL exams in grade 12. While the SAT was not required I still sent the grades to the university.

Placement :

The placements vary depending on the program. It is very hard to find a good job in the arts program mostly because the university does not have a vested interest in promoting the arts program.on the other hand, BBA has great opportunities.

Internship :

Yes, I am in the co-op program at my university. Last summer was the first time I did a coop term or a summer internship. Here I was paid Cad 16 per hour which is a lot over minimum wage. I also enjoyed my role a lot.

Events :

We have orientation week at the beginning of the year in September. This is when we celebrate the first day of new students during move in. We also celebrate all Christian holidays on campus. But there is a cultural gap. Most festivals outside that culture are not celebrated.

Fees :

It costs 20,000 Canadian dollars per year for an international student. This is not in addition to fees such as student union. We also pay extra for health insurance. There is also an extra charge if we miss appointments on campus. Often we find random charges and financial holds on our accounts

Scholarship :

No, I have not been eligible to avail of any such scholarships so far. However this semester I am expecting to be on the honor roll and get a scholarship that is academic.

Examination Structure :

The exam structure is good. There are midterms and assignments in the middle of the term. This goes on for all terms whether it is the spring summer or winter. We get our deadlines in advanced. Followed by that we have an exam period when we have final exams at the end of the term. Some classes have taken home or online exams.

Faculty :

I like the faculty.

Hostel :

I lived on campus in the first year. This was a single room dorm. It has a semi-private washroom I shared with another girl. I was also forced to purchase a meal plan for which I had to pay 5000 for the year. This was in addition to the cost of living in a residence which was 5500 over the year.
