- The Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering is offered by the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering. Student’s course of study includes Advanced Mechanics of Materials, Control of Dynamic Systems, and Mechanical Behavior of Materials as well as additional courses in mechanical engineering, science, mathematics, and computer engineering. Both a research-based thesis option and a project-based non-thesis option are offered.
- Mechanical engineering is concerned with quantitative analysis and the application of engineering science to solve engineering problems. The Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering prepares students for future engineering practice that requires a higher level of mastery in mechanical engineering. It is best suited for individuals with backgrounds in mechanical engineering or related areas (such as materials science or physics). The degree includes courses in computer-based modeling, advanced mechanics of materials, control of dynamic systems, thermo-fluids, and mechanical behavior of materials as well as a limited number of additional courses in science, mathematics, or engineering.
- This program develops students who can:
- Apply analytical techniques to solve engineering problems.
- Demonstrate the ability to define a problem, perform background research, identify a project or research methodology to address the problem, and contribute towards solutions or further understanding of the problem through either a thesis or research project.
- Communicate effectively, in writing and presentations, the results of research or project work.
- Demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge, beyond the undergraduate-level, of mechanical engineering

Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Eligibility:
-
Successful applicants to our program usually meet the following criteria:
- Hold a bachelor's degree in mechanical or manufacturing engineering or a closely related field.
- An undergraduate GPA of at least 2.75 overall, or at least 3.0 in advanced coursework.
- Take the GRE, submitting your scores to Miami University.
- Applicants for graduate study must have earned at least a 4-year U.S. equivalent Baccalaureate degree. Typically, 16 years of schooling with four years of full-time study at the university level, culminating with the award of a first or second degree. Applicants must submit their academic records/transcripts at the time of application. The Graduate School accepts unofficial transcripts at the time of application and does not require third-party credential evaluations.
- Applicants admitted to Miami University must have an official final transcript from the Baccalaureate institution and all courses attended after. Records issued in a language other than English must be accompanied by a literal (not interpretive) certified English translation.
Indian Eligibility:
Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet the following eligibility criteria:
- International students hailing from non-English speaking countries must submit proof of English proficiency. Students may provide score reports of TOEFL/IELTS/… or any equivalent test with at least a minimum score as per program guidelines to prove English proficiency.
- In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Miami is accepting the Duolingo English Test for the 2021-2022 application cycle as an alternative to the TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE test. Miami’s Duolingo English Test scores must include the subscores. If students took the test prior to July 15, 2019, they will need to retake the test.
