- The study of mathematics and statistics emphasizes careful problem analysis, the precision of thought and expression, and the mathematical skills needed for work in many other areas. Mathematicians and statisticians are interested both in the theory and the applications within their disciplines. Theoretical mathematicians discover new theorems and increase basic knowledge in "pure" fields like abstract algebra, analysis, or topology. Applied mathematicians and statisticians use tools growing out of calculus, computing, statistics, and operations research to solve problems in science, industry, government, and other areas.
- Mathematicians or statisticians may work in highly technical areas such as computer programming, or they may work in economics (as statistical analysts), in operations research, in insurance (as actuaries), or in any other field requiring sophisticated analytical skills. Some of these fields include sciences such as astronomy, chemistry, physics, engineering, biology, oceanography, meteorology, and ecology, or fields as diverse as linguistics, law, or business.
- Students have numerous opportunities to work with faculty in small groups, including seminars for first-year majors, seminars in mathematical modeling, study groups for actuarial exams, honors calculus and honors linear algebra, and problem-solving seminars. Problem-solving skills are developed or sharpened in these courses and prove useful in mathematical research work, consulting in business and industry, or taking competitive exams.
- Miami's majors in mathematics and statistics require both theoretical and applied mathematics courses. During the first two years of study, most students majoring in mathematics and statistics complete a sequence of calculus courses and a linear algebra course. With the help of an adviser, students select one or two additional courses that strengthen their preparation for upper-level studies.
- The related hour's requirement is a concentration of courses in an area of study that has a well-established relationship with mathematics and statistics. This requirement enhances students' study of mathematics and statistics and allows them to tailor the courses to their interests. There are specific tracks that students can follow in certain areas such as actuarial science and systems analysis. For other areas such as biological or social science, or decision science, students can design their program with departmental and adviser approval. The requirement also includes a course or demonstrated competency in computer programming.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Eligibility:
To apply for first-year admission as an international student, submit the following documents:
- A recommendation is not required but may be provided on the student’s behalf. This recommendation can be in the form of a letter; a school report completed by your school official; or a teacher evaluation. The recommendation must be submitted directly from a school official or teacher.
- Completion of formal secondary education in a pre-university curriculum
- This education must culminate in the award of a diploma or the issuance of a leaving certificate or matriculation certificate generally recognized as the educational qualification necessary for admission to higher studies.
- Academic records include all secondary school studies, beginning with 9th grade through the most current available at the time of application. Proof of secondary school graduation is required before enrolling at Miami. All documents not originally issued in English must include an English translation.
Indian Eligibility:
Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet the following eligibility criteria:
- If a student's native language is not English, they are required to submit scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS), Duolingo English Test, Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic, or provide alternative evidence of English language proficiency.
- While a valid TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo, or PTE score can satisfy Miami University's English language proficiency requirement, this requirement can also be met through the following alternatives:
- The student’s country of origin is also an English-speaking country and English is your native language.
- An associate or bachelor's degree from a U.S. institution of higher education
- Course equivalency of Miami University's English composition requirement at another U.S. university or community college (not English as a Second Language course). students must provide an official transcript showing a minimum grade of C or better.
- Completion of ELS Language Center's Level 112. (Students who complete ELS Level 109 may be considered for conditional admission to the university through the ACE Program.)
- Enrollment in AP English Language and Composition or AP English Literature in a US high school or high school that follows the US curriculum.
- Enrollment in IB English A at either the Higher or Standard Level as part of a full IB Diploma program.
- Graduation from a U.S. high school following three years of continuous enrollment will lead to placement in the ACE program unless additional proof of English Proficiency is also submitted.
- Most international students are not required to provide an ACT or SAT score, but they may use the ACT or SAT to satisfy English language proficiency requirements.
Note: Miami has chosen to make test scores optional for students applying to the university through Spring 2023 to ensure equitable opportunity for admission, scholarships, and honors programs due to the COVID-19.
