Considering the placement stats after doing a lot of research, one thing is very clear that IIEST ends up with 100% placements every year among which 2-3 CSE/IT students get placed in top-notch companies like Google, Microsoft at an exorbitant compensation package as compares to average package figure of the institute. However, from an independent perspective, the average salary is still at the bottom-line if you consider other tiers 2 colleges. There are certain reasons for it such as:
Recognition:
This is one of the major reasons for such placement stats. Almost nobody outside West Bengal knows that there is an Engineering college name IIEST Shibpur and the same happens with the recruiters as well. People might ask you such questions like where is your college located. Which is this college? Etc.
Alumni Network:
IIEST Shibpur does not have a very strong alumni base in the companies that can influence the companies to conduct any recruitment drive in the college.
Placement Cell:

How is the IT branch at IIEST Shibpur? How are the faculty and placements related to IT branch? Is it comparable to CSE here?
IT at IIEST Shibpur can be good but you need to utilize the opportunities you get properly. The infrastructure at the institute is good. Microsoft also recruits students from campus placements. In the past students have bagged good internship opportunities. One of the students was accepted for Google California (Internship). Compared to the CSE, the IT branch is a little behind in terms of salary packages offered. However, this branch has good diversity.
Faculties for CSE and IT branches are comparable and the IT department even has better faculty members for a few of the subjects. The main difference between CSE and IT is that IT is a sandwich branch of CST and Electronics. So, naturally, you will need to study some Electronics subjects too. For Communication Systems, the IT branch does not have decent faculties. Adding to that, the subject is also not that useful for the future. Despite that this subject eats a chunk of the time of IT students.
Another difference is CST introduces important subjects like algorithms in the 2nd year itself. Whereas, IT introduces these topics one year later.
Basically, the essence is the same for the two branches, there are some minor differences in curriculum and lab work. How you do in placements depends on your hard work.
Where are placements better, IIEST or NIT Durgapur?
Having friends in both the institutes, I can say that overall, NIT Durgapur is a better choice among the two. But IIEST is also an excellent institute with national importance.
There are several factors that affect the placement in both the institutes, according to them here are some -
- IIEST is a famous and well-established institute in West Bengal, previously known as BESU. But, considering India, NIT Durgapur is more popular. The NIT tag itself is a highlight.
- NIT Durgapur has several alumni in tech giants across the world. Students from IIEST are currently in IITs and IISc. This is due to their popularity for higher education.
- Companies recruit fewer students from IIEST, as they have a tendency to leave jobs for better opportunities in higher studies.
- NIT Durgapur also has an excellent coding culture. This increases the chances of securing a job.
- Due to the increase in the number of seats at IIEST, the chances of placement are decreasing.

IIEST Shibpur placement for Electrical Engineering is good. Recruiters offering core job profiles usually offer an average CTC of around INR 5 LPA. My sister was in the batch of (2014-18) at IIEST Shibpur. There were 84 students in her batch, 19 chose a dual degree, and about 60 students were eligible for placements. The major recruiters were M.N Dastur, ZS Associates, HSBC, CGI information systems and management consultants, etc.

This is the placement scenario of the Civil branch at IIEST Shibpur. The number of students applied for placements also matters. Several companies recruit mechanical students from IIEST. Here is a list of them-
- Core Companies- CESC, Maruti Suzuki, Bajaj Auto, Tata power, Saint Gobain, MN Dastur, Hindustan Unilever, Vedanta Limited, Hyundai, DCPL, WSP, VikramSolar, TEGA Industries, Tata projects, Elegant Marine, Denso Haryana, Haldia Petrochemicals, Aditya Birla, Eleation, Tata bluScope, JSL, JSW, Britannia, Wood group, Daimler, Tata Steel, etc.
- Consultancy firms- PwC, ZS, Capgemini, Zycus, etc.
- Mass Recruiters- TCS, CGI, Nissan Digital, Infosys, Cognizant, Compro tech, Silfra tech, HCL, Aakash Institute, etc.
61 out of 75 eligible students from B.Tech ME were placed last year. As an ME student, you can’t expect a 7 figure salary through campus placements. Only a handful of companies offer 8 LPA or above. Mass recruiters offer less than 4 LPA.
The placements are decent for my branch at IIEST Shibpur. You can consult some seniors to know about the placements in other branches.
Does IIEST Shibpur provide a good placement for M.Tech?
No, it is more or less the same as a bachelor's. Not just at IIEST Shibpur, the scenario of placements for Masters is more or less the same at every institute in India.
If you pursuing Masters then you should keep your aim straight to get a Company related to your branch or pursuing higher studies (Ph.D.) for the teaching line. B.Tech level hiring is more or less the same in M.Tech at the institute. There are some departments in M.Tech which have a moderate placement. The other departments do not offer good placement opportunities. But at IIEST Shibpur you will get the best learning opportunities.
At last, it is up to you only which field you are choosing. If you want a job then go for it with for B.Tech degree, If you want a purely technical job then go for a master's and if you want an academic line then go for further higher studies i.e. Ph.D. from abroad.
