NIT Goa admission PhD admissions are expected to start soon. National Institute of Technology, Goa offers PhD courses to candidates in Engineering and Technology, Applied Sciences and Humanities & Social Sciences. 

  • To apply for PhD at NIT Goa, the candidate should at least have a master’s degree in his relevant subject. 
  • Candidates are considered based on GATE or CSIR/NBHM/UGC-NET. 
  • The institute is ranked 77th in the latest MHRD NIRF rankings.
  • The PhD program can last from anywhere between 3 years to 7 years. However, if the candidate wants to stay for the course beyond 5th year, they need to appear before the Department Research Committee and request an extension.
  • The application process for the PhD courses is offline and a personal interview along with a written examination is taken for selection. 
  • Part-time as well as full-time courses are available in the college. 
  • The candidate needs to choose their area of research when applying for admission and present a thesis on the same topic for successful completion of the degree.

NIT Goa Ph.D. Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for PhD courses in the institute the applicant must possess these bare minimum requirements. 

Specialization Minimum Qualification
Computer Science and Engineering M.E or M.Tech in relevant subjects with at least 6.5 CGPA on a 10 point scale or at least 60 percent marks from a recognized institute. For SC/ST candidates, 6 CGPA and 55 percent marks are required.
Electronics and Communication Engineering
Electrical and Electronics Engineering
Applied Sciences Master Degree or M.Tech in relevant subjects with at least 6.5 CGPA on a 10 point scale or at least 60 percent marks from a recognized institute. For SC/ST candidates, 6 CGPA and 55 percent marks are required.

NIT Goa Ph.D. Admission Guidelines

PhD at NIT Goa is entrance based. Students with a valid score in CSIR/NBHM/UGC-NET or GATE can take admission in the institution. There is also a written exam followed by a personal interview.

To apply for a PhD course in the institute, the following steps must be followed: 

  • Go to the official site of NIT Goa.
  • On the home page, go under the admission section and select the PhD section.
  • Download the admission form either in PDF or Word format and print it.
  • Fill up the required details in the application form and enclose it with the documents and a demand draft of 500 or 300 in case of SC/ST candidates.
  • The letter should be sent to NIT Goa before the last date of closing which will be intimated to the applicant.
  • The candidates need to make sure that the following documents are enclosed as applicable at the time of sending the application form. 
    • Passport Photo
    • Self-attested copy of qualified entrance exam
    • Self-attested copy of Class X mark sheet, Bachelor and Master degree
    • Self-attested copy Caste certificates if applicable
    • Self-attested copy of experience certificate
    • A research proposal on the subject of your choice in 1000 words
    • Self-attested NOC copy as applicable
    • Self-attested copy of publications, short term courses etc
  • The application should be titled as “ Application for part/full-time PhD programme for the Department of---“
  • Applicants are then called for the written exam followed by the interview
  • Candidates selected need to bring their original documents at the time of admission

NIT Goa Ph.D. Course Details

The selected candidates will enrol in the course work as self-study or lectures and need to achieve at least 7 points in each course while completing at least 12 credits. The topic in the course will be based on the selection of the candidate and the course work will be based on the decision of the Department Research Committee (DRC) and the candidate’s supervisor. 

  • The candidate needs to write an inclusive examination within 2 years of the start of course as approved by the DRC and the candidate need to exhibit satisfactory progress and fulfil the norm for evaluation.
  • As a part of the same examination, the candidate needs to present a research seminar and show the work on his thesis. 
  • The candidate needs to give progress seminar each semester before DRC and will receive an evaluation of his progress in the form of P as satisfactory and F as not satisfactory.
  • The student can give his thesis for evaluation within three years based on the recommendation of the DRC.
  • In case the thesis gets approved, the student can give viva voice and thesis defence will proceed. In case the thesis receives negative reviews, it will need to be modified and resubmitted.

NIT Goa Ph.D. Fellowship

The Assistantship/Fellowship will be payable for a duration fixed by the Ministry of Human Resources and Development (MHRD) (or the granting agency) or until the date of submission of thesis, whichever is earlier. The Institute admits Ph.D. candidates under the following categories:
