BITS Pilani is a NAAC and UGC accredited reputed institute and is also a member of AIU. BITS Pilani has been recognized as an Institute of Eminence and is also one of the institutes to follow “no reservation policy.” BITS Pilani and NIT Surathkal have been ranked 30th and 13th for Engineering by NIRF 2020.

Admission:

Admission to the BE Mechanical program at BITS Pilani is done through the BITSAT score while at NIT Surathkal BTech Mechanical admission is done through the JEE mains score.

Mechanical Engineering at NIT Surathkal and BITS Pilani:

• The Mechanical Engineering department of BITS Pilani is DST-FIST and UGC-SAP sponsored with strong collaborations with industry and premium institutes all over the globe.

• Faculties at the Mechanical Engineering department of BITS Pilani are Ph.D. holders with past experience in teaching, industry, and research. Prof. P.Srinivasan of the Mechanical Engineering department was felicitated with the “Prof.S.S.Ranganathan Memorial Teaching Excellence Award 2017.”

• NITKRacing, a racing team from the mechanical engineering department participated in the FS Hungary 2012 and bagged an overall position of 33rd. This racing team is funded by giant companies like Bosch, Quest, and Daimler.

• BAJA consists of dedicated students from the mechanical engineering department of NIT Surathkal who are aimed at constructing an All-Terrain Vehicle(ATV) to participate in the BAJA Challenge.

• Prof. Srikanth Bontha from Mechanical Engineering from NITK has been awarded the 2010 Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers(SME).

Top recruiters at NIT Surathkal include Adobe, Amazon, CenturyLink, CITI Bank, Deloitte, Fidelity, Oracle, and VISA while top recruiters at BITS Pilani include Accenture, Axis Bank, Amazon, Bajaj Allianz, Cyient, CISCO Systems, CapGemini, etc.

Alumni:

• Notable alumni of NIT Surathkal include Rajeev Madhavan- Founder of Magma Design Automation. Other notable alumni include Thomas Zacharia who is a renowned Indian-American Computer Scientist.

• Notable alumni of BITS Pilani include S.P Kothari- Professor at MIT Sloan School of Management and Padma Shri Award Winner. Other notable alumni include Baba Kalyani who is Chairman and Managing Director of Bharat Forge.

Both the departments are of high repute with mass placement drive. So, choose according to your convenience.

Both the colleges mentioned above are one of the oldest yet one of the most reputed NIT in the country, as far as placements are concerned it is very difficult to say which one is better as both the institutes provide almost the same placement opportunities.

Placements for MNNIT Allahabad: It has an incredible alumni network, and some top reputed companies visit the campus every year.

• BHEL, Indogulf Fertilizers, Gati Infrastructures, Acolyte Hindalco, Ericsson India Global Services, Eaton, Direct, DIT, Deloitte, Dell, Indian Navy, Capgemini, Canon, Brahmos, BPCL, Bharat Institute of Technology, etc are the regular participants in the placements here.

• The total placement record for Engineering in 2019 was 100% with a median package of 4.14 lakhs per annum and a top package of 36 lakhs per annum for all of its branches.

Placement of NIT Surathkal: NIT Surathkal issued an outstanding record of placement with a hundred percent placement for all its students.

• The highest package offered was 39 lacs per annum, and the median package offered was around 14.15 lakhs per annum.

• Students received offers from Microsoft. Samsung, Microsoft, Adobe, Google, Goldman Sachs, etc.

So the records for the placements shows that NIT Surathkal is a bit better and has an edge over MNNIT Allahabad, in terms of overall placements and the total percentage of students placed.

First, you should decide which branch you want to pursue ECE or Electrical, as that would help you choose the institute. The electrical engineering branch mainly focuses on the power systems and machines while Electronics is mainly focussed on hardware and working of electronic devices.

Now coming to options you have, for electrical IIT Roorkee and IIT BHU have similar course content. But IIT Roorkee has a slight edge over IIT BHU as more companies visit the campus compared to IIT BHU. A total of 254 companies participated in the placement drive for 2019-20 at IIT Roorkee. The average CTC offered was around 14.7 LPA. Whereas, the placement highlights for 2019 at the IIT BHU show, a total of 52 companies visited the campus and the average salary was around 8.19 LPA. A total of 88 students from Electrical Engineering got placed this year.

IIT Guwahati offers a good ECE program. In 2019, the ECE department had 84% placement and the average CTC offered was around 11 LPA. A total of 88 students got placement from IIT BHU last year. If you want to have the option for software placement, then IIT BHU will be the better option. Software placements of IIT BHU are better than IIT G. Also, IIT BHU offers a better coding culture.

IIT Indore is the best of all three IITs. It has very good research facilities in comparison to the other institutes and is rapidly improving. Since every other institution mentioned above is an IIT, so, there shall be always better opportunities in comparison to any other Engineering college in India. Also, IIT Bhubaneswar has a very good campus life and teaching faculty. It always stands at par in comparison to old IITs.

NIRF rankings are given to institutes according to the availability of facilities in various fields in the institute by MHRD. Faculty, campus life, and research facilities must be very good for an institute with good NIRF ranking. As Gandhinagar and Bhubaneswar are the capital cities, they lead to better connectivity and other metro facilities. 

Campus life is always peaceful in any IIT since they are constructed in specially chosen places and they grow rapidly and simultaneously with other IITs. But the quality of teaching and the teaching methods vary from one institute to another. IIT- BHU and IIT Indore have their own campus with good hostel facilities while IIT Gandhinagar has its permanent campus but is still under construction. 

The other way of choosing the institution is checking with the JEE advanced cut-off ranks. This would give an insight into the facilities in the institute and quality of the peer group as the quality of the peer group is the most important deciding factor in the selection of a campus.

The Political Science Department at both Ashoka University and Jadavpur University is quite good.

Ashoka University offers different branches of Political Science as honors courses. It has a wonderful group of faculty which include graduates or PhDs from ivy league colleges. The university also offers a choice to pursue a fourth year of undergraduate, which is a requirement for most of the good universities abroad.

Jadavpur University is an old well-reputed university and the department of international relations of JU is one of the best in the country. The infrastructure is quite good at JU. Apart from the departmental library, there is a central library which has over 4000 books. Seminars are conducted by guest lecturers from all over the country and the world. Graduates mostly go on to pursue higher studies from reputed universities in India and abroad.

IIT BHU and IIT Gandhinagar both are decent IITs. IIT Gandhinagar has a better NIRF ranking as compared to IIT BHU. Although IIT BHU has a lot of Engineering courses to offer, the overall infrastructure and environment are not as conducive as IIT Gandhinagar. Also, the recent year’s cutoffs are comparably higher for IIT Gandhinagar.

Furthermore, IIT Gandhinagar has a unique and distinctive “Foundation Program” which helps students get acquainted with academic life and college environment. Besides, the faculty of IIT GN is also among the best. On the contrary, there is a shortage of faculty members in many branches (including Civil Engineering) at IIT BHU.

The campus location of IIT Gandhinagar is also comparably better as compared to IIT BHU. It is pertinent to note that the campus of IIT BHU is merged with BHU, which makes the campus a crowded place for students. Also, the placement scenario in both the colleges is almost at the same level.

Although IIT BHU being much older than IIT Gandhinagar, offers a huge alumni base. IIT GN might be considered a new IIT by many, but the progress that it has shown is humongous. It also provides a conducive environment for research scholars and has an overhauled infrastructure (including labs). Both colleges have their pros and cons, so it is hard to choose one institute over the other.
