Which is better: to get Biotechnology at IIT Kanpur or Mechanical Engineering at IIT Dhanbad?

SN
Saugata Nayak Posted On : April 20th, 2023
Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (2020)

First of all, IIT Kanpur does not offer Biotechnology, rather it offers Biological Sciences and Bioengineering. This is a good choice for those who don’t have any specific interests and are ready to study biology. In IIT Kanpur your CPI values much more than your branch. So don’t waste too much time deciding on one and just go for any of it.

Placements: IIT Kanpur has both core and noncore jobs in abundance. Core jobs are a bit lesser than non-core jobs with only a handful of core companies. However, the majority of recruiters offer non-core jobs for which the only requirement is a good CPI. Here, your branch does not matter and the role offered is nothing related to your branch. To a certain extent, non-core packages offered are better than core packages so most students prefer this.

Curriculum: The ocean of electives available to choose from at IIT Kanpur, makes it possible for students to explore much more than their branch. You are also eligible to do a major or minor in any other branch provided you fulfill its minimum CPI criteria. IIT Kanpur also has a branch change faculty at the end of the first year. All this flexibility makes IIT Kanpur’s curriculum a much coveted one.

Lastly, I would like to comment that your choice of Institute is also crucial. The opportunities and exposure offered matter a lot and IIT Kanpur offers it all!

Is it possible for me (GEM candidate) to get into IIM Calcutta via Mgmt. Quota as far as the Academic Session 2023-25 is concerned? I have scored 52%ile in CAT 2022.

RT
Raktim Tarafdar Posted On : June 23rd, 2023

None of the top B schools have management quotas, and even if they do, the curriculum is so rigorous and difficult that they won't be able to survive in the first few terms and will be expelled for poor performance in the first few years, resulting in a total waste of money.

How is the 8.0 CGPA at IIT Delhi?

SP
Sona Panday Posted On : April 14th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (2018)

At IIT Delhi, a 7 CGPA is considered average so definitely 8 CGPA will be considered above average. The value of CGPAs at IIT Delhi is as follows

  • 7.0: AVG
  • 8.0: ABOVE AVG
  • 9.0: VERY GOOD
  • 9.5+: EXCELLENT

Key highlight pertaining to CGPA

  • The usual cutoff set by companies that visit the campus for placements is 8.5. Very few companies have a cutoff of 8 or 9 so to stay on the safer side, 8.5 is an ideal CGPA.
  • No matter how lucrative your CGPA may seem if you don’t fill the certain criteria, it will be very difficult to get placed
  • Forex is a rare example that requires an 8 CGPA
  • For those opting for branch change, need to maintain 8+ CGPA
  • To hold a Position of Responsibility the minimum CGPA required is 7 CGPA.

I would like to comment that an 8 CGPA is quite decent and will open opportunities to a certain extent but to ensure maximum opportunities, an 8.5+ CGPA is recommended.

Is Sambalpur the right place to set up the IIM in Odisha?

RT
Ritu Thakur Posted On : February 10th, 2023
Budding entrepreneur/avid traveler

The Government's decision to establish institutions such as IITs and IIMs is driven by several factors, including the need to provide more opportunities for the country's large and talented population. In addition to this, these institutions also play a significant role in the economic development of the country. For example, the establishment of IITs, NITs, and IIMs in places such as Kharagpur, Silchar, Kozhikode, and Shillong has led to the development of these areas and the surrounding regions, which is known as decentralization of development.

When the Government decides to set up an institution of national importance, several factors are considered when choosing a location, including proximity to means of communication, proximity to industries, and proximity to other good educational institutions. For example, Sambalpur is well connected to the National Highway and is located in the industrial belt of Orissa, with many companies in and around the area. Additionally, there are already many well-established state institutions such as VSSUT, VSS medical college, and Sambalpur University, which makes the area an ideal location to establish an educational hub.

It is important to note that the absence of an airport does not necessarily impede the ability of an educational hub to attract talent or placement opportunities. As can be seen in the case studies of IIT Kharagpur and NIT Rourkela, these institutions have become high-quality institutions despite the lack of an airport. As long as the quality is maintained and institutions attract talented students, the majority of the work toward creating a successful educational hub is done.

Can I crack the IPM IIM Indore and UGAT in a one month crash course?

NG
Nivedita Ghose Posted On : August 20th, 2021
PGPM from IIM Indore (2020)

Yes, you can. There are certain differences between the two exams that you should know.

  • The IPMAT has a higher level of mathematics. You will have around 5 to 10 questions that you won’t have studied, for example, logs, if you haven’t done mathematics in your 10th grade. So there will be some extra topics which you will have to prepare.
  • The UGAT, on the other hand, has a general knowledge section. It is a bit tricky for those who don’t have a fair idea of what’s going on around. But it can be covered if you start preparing now.

If you think of doing a crash course when just one month of the exam is left, you will be going to the coaching for half of your day and they will try putting in a lot of information in your head so that you have a vague general idea about the syllabus but you won’t have a good foundation on any of the topics. This acts as a major problem when giving an exam such as IPMAT as the questions are quite simple but have a tricky element to them.

Therefore, it is better to start preparing as early as possible and cover all the topics at least once. Some simple topics like algebra, time and space, etc., can be left out. You can solve a specific set of questions for these topics as exam questions do not differ a lot from them.

For other topics which are comparatively difficult, use material from various coachings and you can go through those chapters at least once.

What are the attendance rules in IIT BHU?

PH
Priya Handa Posted On : August 14th, 2020
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology Varanasi

In IIT BHU, students are expected to attend all the classes for their respective courses. However, if for some reason students fail to attend all classes, they need to maintain a minimum of 85% attendance. The 85% attendance rule is applicable for theory classes, however, for laboratory classes students are expected to maintain 100% attendance. If any students miss lab class for some emergency they can contact the teacher concerned to make up for it. Students are allowed leave for medical emergencies provided they submit proper documentation. Many professors follow the attendance rule strictly while others may not. To be safe students should maintain a minimum of 85% attendance as the institute takes disciplinary measures for students who fail to do so.

How good is IIM Lucknow?

KS
Kokila Singh Posted On : January 16th, 2023
MBA in Marketing, Indian Institute of Management Lucknow (Graduated 2008)

The faculty is adequate but not exceptional. The quality of hostels varies considerably. Which hostel you get depends on your chance. Peer group is once more acceptable; they aren't particularly talented, but you can't also say they aren't talented. Mess is acceptable. There is a canteen where you can get more tasty but unhealthy food. Every room has a high-speed internet connection. Everyone is assigned a single room so that they can learn to be self-sufficient. Although the curriculum is demanding, the workload is manageable. You have plenty of free time to relax.

The cost, which is high but not as high as options A, B, and C, is an important consideration. Therefore, only go there if you can afford it. Only a small portion of what you learn in school will apply to real-world situations, but you will learn a great deal outside of it.
